Ah, yea, you'll find something nice for $800-1000 depending on where you are looking. Rent prices are based on the how drunk the owner was when he listed it, the rental agents mood at the time of signing an agreement, the length of time the listing sat on someones desk before being put on the internet, and timing of the full moon. Location, quality, comparable properties, amenities, length on the market have nothing to do with it.

If it is just you, $4,500 a month will do you well. If you have family in tow, then you'll struggle some especially at first.
how can school, health care, food and electricity be more than $3500 ?? The pricing I have found leaves me with an extra
$1000 a month...including the ISS school and healthcare

If you're single, that is probably enough. But, if your like me, and had sex without a condom THREE TIMES, you'd just make it. This is me:

Wife and three kids, decent house with 3 A/Cs, and a pool. Old car and new moto paid for.

$1250- Rent
$550- Electric
$72- Cable
$30- Cell phone
$100- Pool chemicals
$2000- Grocery store
$400- Restaurants
$300- Liquor store
$200- Gas (car+ moto)
$50- Gas (house)
$200- Gardener
$200- Nanny
$80- Bank fees (wires and xoom)
$400- Tuition
$150- Medical Insurance
-------------
=$5,882

This is me, I posted a while ago. Not much has changed, no maid at the moment, electric is down to $250 a month (no A/C), and my little one is in preschool at $85 a month. We've been doing better with the food budget (not the liquor, you can pull my rum bottle from my cold dead hands!)

Yea, I thought that too. I should be living large! Food is expensive until you know where to get it. And, your loaf of bread doesn't last a week on the counter!

I live in Santiago
Remember, transportation, water/sewer/trash, cellular, TV/internet, drinkable water, propane, hobbies, clothing,

And if you eat the same things you ate in your home country food will be more expensive here.

My startup costs without a car was 15000+ for furnishings, ... .

LOLmy big food items are steak and canadian cheddar LOL..where do u find good imported steak?

The meat here is underrated. It is lean, very lean. You can do one of three things: 1) cook it into submission; 2) adapt how you cook it, I prefer it rarer; 3) marinade, ... . you can get filet at less than 300 rd$/lb; you will as also find veal at low prices.

National for cheese selection 10$/lb instead of 20 for most.

Forgot to mention that it can be aged too - I have had success with that.

We are the quintessential fat American Millenials hell bent on consumerism, and have poor budgeting skills. You'll be alright, just don't expect to have any extra your first six months. Any money you have left over will go to Jose Luis, Miguel, and Chi Chi.

One of my great discoveries (that everyone else knew already) have been "produce day" (Tuesday here) and "meat day" (Thursday). The discount can approach 50%. But...it's like Black Friday...

RandyLRM that is what I was talking about but it can be done but some people want to live in a pent house. My appartment $200 I love it but a lot would would complain because I have no AC and no inverter I have fans and sometimes go with out power for a few hour's but I get by ok.
