Being called a gringo for a foreigner is similar to black Haitians being called Moreno. I asked my Haitian gardener once if he minded being called Moreno and he said "no, I'm black".

OP, you have not stated where you live, but I would suggest you try living in an area where there are more "gringos" (not a derogatory term here). Try living in somewhere like Cabarete or Bavaro and I think you would be looked at as just another foreigner and receive much more respect.
