    Coronavirus - In the DR

No of course they are not. They get RD$ 7000 a month from the government, which is £100. Quite a lot of kids going without food by all accounts.

Presidency requests Congress reinstate National State of Emergency

I speak Spanish fluently and I'm a gringo. Another generalisation.

Presidency requests Congress reinstate National State of Emergency

I'd stay in the UK if I were you Linda. I was going to go back to DR next week but changed my flights to avoid all the chaos.

In the UK you get the results from the government test the next day. Amazon picks up the swabs in the morning and the results come through by midnight. There is a fingerprick test that gives you the results within 20 mins which is pretty accurate (97% accurate I think).

    Coronavirus - In the DR

September and October are always the worst times of year for hotels due to hurricane season. The association of hotels and restaurants have said many times if they cannot open in August, they may as well liquidate all their staff and close until November or even December. So this could have...

    Coronavirus - In the DR

But the AI's need staff who often live miles away, they need transport to and from the airports, they need companies to supply them with food and drinks, and then all those people need to get to and from work 24 hours a day. You can't keep a 1000 bedroom hotel open in isolation. I guess you...

    Medical Insurance

The lady who does my insurance is called Zaide Alba, she runs an insurance brokers called Coalcava in Santo Domingo. Just email her with your dates and she will send you a quotation. Her email is zalba@coalcava.com . The quotation will give the name of the insurance company and set out...

Presidency requests Congress reinstate National State of Emergency

There is some talk that they would set up a lockdown in Santiago and Santo Domingo (only).

Presidency requests Congress reinstate National State of Emergency

I can't quite see how that would work. If you have tourists in hotels, then you need staff to come backwards and forwards to work, you need all the staff involved in running airports, you need all the transport companies and taxis and then all the companies that supply the hotels. And it's...

    Medical Insurance

You can definitely buy a "viajero" policy which is health insurance for visitors. I was talking about this specifically with my insurance lady yesterday. You just give your dates and they set up a policy for you with one of the big insurers like Humano. I'm happy to pass on the details...

    Flights to Europe

John the issue is coming back to DR via the US. The US is still not allowing anyone to enter who has been in Europe, even for transit. So yes you can go back to Europe via the US, but you can't get back to DR again afterwards. To return you would have to go via Madrid, and then you will...

    British Airways London-Punta Cana

Yes I agree entirely. I think it would be terrible to get Covid in DR as a foreigner.

    British Airways London-Punta Cana

Evelop flies to Madrid from Punta Cana and Iberia flies to Madrid from Santo Domingo. From the north coast you're better to go for the Iberia and it's mainly non-tourist traffic on the Santo Domingo - Madrid route so I think it will be less likely to cancel. They fly four times per week.

    Flights to Europe

Yes they cancelled all August flights on Friday. And I think it's very unlikely that they will resume their service in September as that's always the worst month due to hurricane season and the kids going back to school.

    Flights to Europe

Linda the best way to go is via Madrid with Iberia from Santo Domingo, the flights connect nicely to London. But you need to be aware that you will need to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival in the UK and they are definitely checking that you do this. No visas required and Spanish...

    British Airways London-Punta Cana

The easiest way is probably Iberia SDQ > Madrid and then Madrid > London, the connections work very well (6am arrive Madrid and onward flight to London at around 9am). Transit via the US is always a nightmare. Iberia is definitely flying and as BA's sister company, BA will happily book you...

    Flights to Europe

I don't think the loads on Iberia are bad, at least judging from the seat maps for today's flights. Maybe about 2/3rds full if that. But hardly anything to eat or drink in a 9 hour flight really sucks.

Covid-19 deaths up after the elections

I keep hearing the rumour that they are planning a 24 hour lockdown, and the health minister is asking Danilo to do this. What do people think?

    Flights to Europe

Terrible comments about the catering on Iberia MAD > SDQ. People are saying that in business class all you get is a tiny roll, a packet of biscuits, a yoghurt and a bottle of water. For a 9 hour flight which costs $2000. You can't even use the business class washrooms.

    Flights to Europe

It's a way of paying for flights using miles, BA and Iberia call their miles Avios. There is limited availability for redemption tickets on flights, for example BA has very few seats available but Iberia has good availability at the moment.
