In Santo Domingo at 6.45AM atmospheric pressure has fallen to 1013 which lowest Ive seen it in over three years. *Presently light rain on and off. *The blob is on our door steps

Thank you for posting this. I was regretting not owning a barometer and I could not find a website that gave historical barometric readings.

What about cancelled flights at the airports? Where can we find about them. Looks like the storm will still be hanging around by Wednesday when I am scheduled to fly outta here. My flight heads south, and not toward Florida where the storm is projected to be between here and there by then, but still does any one know?
Der Fish

Go on line to whatever airline you booked on and check the status. It all depends if flights are coming into the airport, as usual.

Observation from the Frontier

Might have spoken to soon about it being so quite.

Sunrise is the normal feeding time for the compound dogs ( 2 rotties and the mongrel black ) and they wouldn't even come out of their houses for their food. Wanted it " put inside " !!! Got hit with a sudden downpour before I could get back to the main house. I think they knew it was coming....

Other than that brief heavy stuff it has been just a constant light rain since so I am not sure what to make of the " big blob " everyone is talking about. As mike said it might just be a " false reading " but let's wait and see as the day moves on.

Heavy dark clouds over the Sierra de Bahoruco's so maybe they are getting the bulk of the heavier rains...if so it does not look good for Haiti on the other side of the mountains.

No wind to speak of here.

later my friends,

Update from Santiago Rodriguez province. Calm night, woke to grey skies - exactly like England and even feels like British weather. Roosters not crowing this morning so that is one advantage to the weather. No wind to speak of and very very quiet. No rain so far.

In Sodom II (Sosua), it is overcast, gray, no wind, and dry. No apparent rain overnight, the birds are flying and the pressure has been steady for the last 18 hours @ 101.2~

It would sure be nice if the DR had a network for weather radar available online to see exactly where the precipitation is at the moment.

If you go onto Weather Underground and then look at the blog, underneath the blog there are comments by people who all appear to be meteorologists. And quite a few seem to say that they have never seen anything like this blob before and have no idea why it is there. So anything could happen. Or nothing at all. Which is a great comfort when you're right underneath the thing.

Got the same message on Orange. Would probably be a good idea to include a link where one can go to check the bulletins to which they refer.*

even looking at online newspapers will keep you in the loop.
COE page is here: http://www.coe.gob.do/
ONAMET page is here: http://www.onamet.gov.do/#

as per COE evacuations in DR have already started. they are expecting to move even half a million people:

I have an App weather station that tracks digitally rain temp and atmos pressure called Netatamo. Whats interesting is it links into other similar stations on a map where I can access their information. There is one in Puerto Prinicipe and its presently registering 1006.2mb atmos pressure and 3mm of rain today. *Will keep monitoring. *

Drizzly rains begin in Santiago.
For the first time in my memory, the PUCMM has cancelled classes on both campuses....and all schools are closed until Wednesday.

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND
----------------------
WIND: *Hurricane conditions are expected to reach Jamaica and Haiti
tonight, and eastern Cuba Tuesday. *Tropical storm conditions are
expected to first reach Jamaica and Haiti later today and eastern
Cuba tonight, making outside preparations difficult or dangerous.
Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to
completion. *Tropical storm conditions are expected along the
southern coast of the Dominican Republic within the warning area
beginning today. *Tropical storm conditions are expected to
reach the southeastern Bahamas early Tuesday with hurricane
conditions expected by late Tuesday.

Hurricane conditions are possible in the hurricane watch areas by
Tuesday night with tropical storm conditions possible on Tuesday.
Tropical storm conditions are also possible in the tropical storm
watch area in the Dominican Republic by late today.

RAINFALL: *Matthew is expected to produce total rain accumulations
of 15 to 25 inches across southern Haiti and the southwestern
portion of the Dominican Republic, with possible isolated amounts of
40 inches. *Across eastern Cuba and western Haiti, total rain
accumulations of 8 to 12 inches are expected with possible isolated
maximum amounts of 20 inches. *Across eastern Jamaica, total
rainfall of 5 to 10 inches is expected, with isolated maximum
amounts of 15 inches possible. This rainfall will likely produce
life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.

Matthew is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 8 to 12
inches over the southeastern Bahamas, with isolated maximum amounts
of 15 inches. Matthew is expected to produce total rain
accumulations of 2 to 5 inches, with isolated maximum amounts of
8 inches over the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Lower amounts are expected across the northeastern section of Haiti
and the Dominican Republic, with amounts ranging from 1 to 3 inches
with isolated amounts around 5 inches.

STORM SURGE: *The combination of a dangerous storm surge and large
and destructive waves could raise water levels by as much as the
following amounts above normal tide levels...

Southern Coast of Cuba east of Cabo Cruz...7 to 11 feet
South Coast of Haiti...7 to 10 feet
Northern Coast of Cuba east of Camaguey...4 to 6 feet
Jamaica...3 to 5 feet
Gulf of Gonave in Haiti...3 to 5 feet
Southern coast of the Dominican Republic...1 to 3 feet
Central and southeastern Bahamas...10 to 15 feet

Surge-related flooding depends on the relative timing of the surge
and the tidal cycle, and can vary greatly over short distances.
Large waves generated by Matthew will cause water rises to occur
well in advance of and well away from the track of the center.

SURF: *Swells generated by Matthew will continue to affect portions
of the coasts of Hispaniola, Jamaica, Aruba, Colombia, eastern Cuba,
and the Caribbean coastline of Central America during the next few
days. *These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and
rip current conditions. *Please consult products from your local
weather office.

Miramar, Santo Domingo. Sun is breaking through yet all dark grey heavy clouds over the ocean and to the west...
