So let me get this right. Captain Robert Skaates took some people out in their boat (not his -Captain Rob's boat) to show them how to fish????? Is that correct???

A fourth life jacket has been found (as per Lucille's post above)
Marina de Guerra encuentra un cuarto chaleco de los n?ufragos - ElDia.com.do

and the pathologist is saying the cord on Laura Ricart's wrist wasn't a sign of violence. 'El doctor Santo Jim?nez P?ez explic? que el cord?n que presenta en la mu?eca derecha el cuerpo de la se?ora Ricart podr?a corresponderse a la pr?ctica de personas con experiencia en la navegaci?n de amarrarse unos a otros en caso de desastre para evitar la separaci?n por las fuertes olas'

Perhaps it was said for the sake of the family but............it isn't the usual way of attaching your safety harness to the lifelines in heavy seas.

Given the earlier frequent reports and the ongoing search there has been very little about this in the papers today.

Ginnie,

With all do respect people don't wear lifelines except on transatlantic passages on racing sail boats.

It was a shoe lace type of thing which is common for young people to wear on their wrist.

Yes I agree mike, it could well have been a decoration but did you get the Spanish? The pathologist was suggesting the shoelace could have been used as a security device by experienced sailors to tie themselves to another sailor to prevent separation in heavy seas. That was what I found a little unusual. Either way, it doesn't bring her back so profound condolences to both families.

All I can say is never go on an offshore boating trip without knowing if you will return!

I was on a 123' vessel that sank 80 miles offshore east of New Jersey and if we did not have an EPIRB ,

Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon

I would not be here telling you this story.

People are not educated in the dangers at sea.

People wear condoms in fear they may get AID'S... 10 years later but will hop on a boat and without knowing if they will ever return.

People drive all over town trying to save a couple of bux on a tank full of gas but they have no idea of how their 401K is invested!

So if you want to go fishing ......

I think you mean DUE respect Mike l.

I think you will find that any sensible &/or experienced master of a boat would ensure his/her crew put on safety lines in ANY rough seas Mike l - ESPECIALLY true if the crew is inexperienced (as is intoned in this instance).

Even with a number of years sailing on inland waters OUR captain:pirate: insisted on lifelines when walking the decks IN THE SOLENT because the seas were breaking more than 10 feet above us!! Sensible precautions I would suggest. ~ Grahame.

I must appologize!

I really don't venture offshore with vessels of small magnitude and your captain should not be steering you in harms way as the captains position is to overcome the stormy seas of adversity and provide safe passage so you may drop anchor in the bay of tranquility!

We always insit that the elderly wear life jackets and never let them have alcohol.

Relax,

Sad, sad story.

This has turned out to be a sad, sad story. I was hoping for a nice turn-around, but that isn't realistic now, is it.

I join those who pray for their families to find peace.

And I leave it to the authorities to sort out the (confusing) details.

My condolences to the families, and may Capt. Bob R.I.P.

Speculations

I see where many people have made comments about Capt Rob, as how he could have allowed this to happen.

The owners of the boat asked him to teach them to fish. Apparently, the boat was not inspected by the local Coast Guard and that may have made some difference if it had been but how does anyone know? No one knows what happened to these people.

Capt Rob has, from my understanding, has a Masters Ticket from the USCG and around 35 years experience at sea in several countries around the world. He is a very competent. I do not see Capt Rob going offshore without first checking out the boat.

These comments from those who more than likely have little or no experience piloting vessels and in this case a smallcraft are at best armchair quarterbacking and worst insensitive to the families of these victims that may read these "Nancy Grace" type comments.

True.

I was an offshore racer/sailor for many years. We ALWAYS had jacklines and tethers attached whenever on deck.

I'm surprised they ventured out in bad conditions.

I always abided by the axiom: "The definition of a Superior Sailor is one who uses his Superior Judgement to keep out of situations requiring the use of his Superior Skills."

Please don't post false things

I have been told it is reported that is a murder. These folks were murdered prior to being tossed in the water. Bound and no water in lungs.

USGC C-130 Infrared searches find no other bodies in the water and the thinking is now that Capt Rob and the woman's husband were kidnapped.

Can someone confirm? This was told to me by someone viewing the news this morning.

I'm a family member. Please don't post unfounded speculations about Laura and her companions on this trip. It just hurts the family to read unfounded and unproven rumors. This is hard enough to bear as it is.

Thanks,
