I read through most of this thread and a few additions:

* Chikas use drugs - many like the surge of confidence that comes with cocaine use and more then a few qualify for addiction.
* The idea that chikas are victims forced in to prostitution due to economic pressures - is largely false and a ridiculous puritan view. There are some sad cases, very sad cases and I've helped a number of these. But most enjoy the sport, the lifestyle, and the upward mobility that the trade provides. In American English, they are called sporty girls for a reason. The smart women use the money to fund their education as abogadas or medicas because youth is fleeting after all..
* my opinion, but Sus?a should transition gradually to more family friendly environment if desired. Rapid change is doom.

They completely demolished the old rooms and added more In the process. I guess arien isn't worried about lose of business, but he has a large European business in the winter along with Chica hunters. Chica hunters that stay there like a quiet atmosphere to come back too.

He is a very smart businessman, and I know only too well (from being the manager--past, t'anks G*d--) of a hotel that Trip Advisor linked in the same class, that he is the ONLY one in the small, old, "charming" hotel group who has ever made money here. Hence the re-build. He is a very smart manager, canny investor, and he has an amazing eye for what the clients want. Word is he went to Panama with his architect/designer to find the best/most workable things for here. I salute him!

Restaurant Orchidee re-opened tonight, with a totally refreshed and sun-tanned Tilo at the helm.

I had sort of hoped that maybe the menu would be refreshed, but I guess you can't really mess with a tried & true formula. There was a new menu item: beef fajitas. The chicken curry with (or without) spinach was not on the menu, but he offered to make it for me, as he knows I am devoted to it.

OK. I live so close. And it was pouring. But I would have gone anyway, bc it is such a great place. One is never disappointed. Many times I would like to linger...have a 3rd glass of wine.

Only those stairs!

Tomorrow morning is the official "gathering" of the association of business owners of el batey Sos?a and their "supporters" on the main road going through Sos?a in front of the "Sosua - Puerto Plata" public car stand across from the Texaco gas station.

For those travelling through Sos?a from 9:00am on, expect some delays going through Sos?a. Depending on the amount of "support" they get it could be a real inconvenience for many. Traffic COULD be completely stopped for a while. The fact that they are getting the support of the taxi drivers and the truck drivers could cause some real problems.

Today there were several cars riding around Los Charamicos, Sos?a Abajo, Maranatha, Cangrejo, La Union, Villa Liberacion, etc. announcing tomorrow's "gathering" and asking for everyone to attend and support their cause.

Likely there will be "News at 11" tonight about this event. A shame there is no web cam to watch events as they unfold.

I would be interested in knowing when this gathering has dispersed today.
