I assume that there is a large silence majority in Sosua like the US, that knows the mayor and her people are complete idiots but keep tight lipped about it.

Are you talking a full fledged sit down restaurant? Cause there are at least 4 places bewteen Rumba & Plan B that serve Plato del dia and/or the typical Dominican fare

These are street food type places

I would like a nice Dominican restaurant, fresh fish would be a bonus.

I understand there is not much of a demand as most expats have no interest.

As an owner of one of the restaurants mentioned above I can say it must be nice to not have any skin in the game and not have to worry about losing your whole investment. I'm afraid I will be losing mine because corrupt politicians decided to do for the few at the top that can pay for their agenda and the rest of us be damned!! I definitely won't be hiring and instead quite possibly be closing. But as long as you've made your insensitive opinion everything is cool!!

No investment is without risk. All investors know this which is why much time as well as money is spent doing due diligence before capitol is invested into any business or project. You mention "Corrupt Politicians" as the sole reason that you will be "losing yours". So you're saying that these corrupt politicians are squeezing you for money? Asking you to pay double in taxes? extortion of another sort? Were these same politicians here when you bought your business or did they suddenly show up after the fact? If so, then your post is valid and I feel for you. On the other hand, many so called investors owning businesses on PC bought in knowing full well that their business model depended upon prostitution and sex tourism. I'm sure that many of them too are looking at their losses and now wishing that they thought twice before investing into this business model. Maybe they will understand from lessons learned from this poor investment and use better judgement when investing into their next business venture.

No, just the opposite. If you talk to Dominicans (and you gotta leave pedro clisante) they are 100% behind the change.

Exactly. Which is why I have serious doubts that the hours of operation will go back to as before. Time will tell on that.

When is the next protest on the current hours of operation?

Well, you are correct with the expats not diggin' it so much, but I kinda like the Comedor that's on Pedro Clisante, by where the Blackberry awning is hanging, good food, decent price

Maybe the business owners organizing the protest should pay people to show up in hopes for it to be more successful this time around..

It's funny you should mention this, the organizers of the previous protest are using a new strategy to attract "supporters". After the failure of their original protest to extend the hours of operation of businesses serving alcohol, their future plans are to include other issues, COMBINED with the later hours issue.

So now they claim that they are going to also address the issues of poor water service, poor electrical service, poor maintenance of streets and sidewalks, etc., etc. And that would be great if that was there actual objective. Unfortunately it isn't. They are just trying to increase "attendance".

Just saw this

Dear All,

As a follow up to last week's protest, there will be a meeting to finally address the illegal actions performed (for several weeks) by the Government and their Police forces, where they outside any law have bullied and threatened (or shut down) bar and club owners to operate with heavily reduced trading hours compared to any other town or city. These actions have caused a big downturn in both business and tourism. We encourage everyone to attend tomorrow's meeting to help fight for equal trading hours and demand that Government and their Police forces will stop destroying the economy and start doing their real jobs.

When: Tomorrow, Friday, Sep 9th at 6:00pm
Where: Sosua Bay Convention Center (Level 2)

After reading the laws about hours of operation, (which are described somewhere back in the depths of this thread) I saw nothing illegal about what has been done in Sosua. So if that is the strategy being used in the meeting, they are not going to win on that premise.

This is their latest.

They are going around Sos?a handing this out on the streets to EVERYONE they see and making it a point to tell them that they will be addressing the issues of water, electricity, street maintenance, etc., depending upon which area they are in. Yesterday they were going door to door in Los Charamicos, Sos?a Abajo and Maranatha and stopping people in the street asking for support, but emphasizing the infrastructure issues, which is what the majority of the residents are actually interested in.

Exactly what the tourism associations were complaining about to the Government most strongly in early June....

Sosua, Puerto Plata.- Hospitality of this tourist destination of North Coast feels abandoned by the Government, because the works promised to no one knows when to start, and others that are running it is unknown when it will be completed.

The complaint that most often heard on the part of tourist representatives is that with the official sector "we have not had the luck of other destinations, where the governmental hand has been felt generously in regards to the construction of economic and social development".

Representatives of the Asociaci?n de Desarrollo de Cabarete (ADECA), Association of hotels and restaurants Sosua-Cabarete (Ashoresoca) and the Association for the sustainable development of Sos?a (ADSS) listed in a document delivered last May 24 President Danilo Medina the five priority projects for the development of both communities.

Among these works are cited the construction of the project of vendors on the beach of this village square; the construction of the public hospital to Sosua and Cabarete. the renovation of the Centre of the tourist district of Cabarete, and the completion of the plant of treatment of residual waters to both poles.

Also included is a frontal attack against prostitution which affects Sosua, which has overflowed..............

These guys obviously think less of the community than the tourist associations and are very late to the party for obvious reasons.

These two associations ASOCOBAS and ASOCOPEC represent the businesses generally catering to sex tourists, while ADECA, ASHORESOCA and ADSS are diametrically opposed. They all have their own agenda. However the "community" associations ADECA and ADSS are more representative of the entire population of Sos?a as is reflected in their membership and methods.

Being obligated to attend the meetings of all of the above associations and several others, one quickly realizes where true "community" sentiments are addressed and where personal or business agendas are being promoted. Although many issues due overlap into different associations their overall agendas are clear.

Well that's interesting. Isn't that EXACTLY when the film Shark Girl is being shown in the same venue to start the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival ?

The new owners are no strangers to Sos?a and their other investments here are very successful. They have some very interesting plans for this new project and they certainly don't adhere to the de facto business model of Pedro Clisante. Based on these plans and their willingness to market to a new demographic they are insuring that their success will continue.

Their success is not assured.

It certainly isn't.

But by not catering to sex tourists and the prostitutes they patronize they are insuring themselvs against persecution and prosecution by the community and government authorities respectively.

There is plenty of risk in that location.

Plenty of risk? How so?

the restrictive Hours of Operation are ILLEGAL.. ie there is no basis in Law for such Hours in a Tourist Town.. none. If there is, I would like to see that Law.
and if they do keep those restrictive hours That Alone will completely destroy every single business that sells Alcohol on PC.
There is no way mathematically to make enough money, IF every Restaurant /Bar is open on the strip( even less cash flow per business)
And never mind off the strip. Those businesses will fail as well, dont care what kind of business model they have . If they serve drinks and can only stay open til 12 they will fail.
You will NOT change the Habits of every single drinking person who enjoys some " nightlife" , and they will just magically have dinner EARLY and go put themselves to bed at the stroke of midnight, it can not be done.
They will go elsewhere . its a mathematical certainty.. just like the flooding & sinking of the Titanic.
Sometimes I thing people can not do simple math.

I believe that's the point JD.

"The Powers that be" have decided to make changes in Sosua; to eradicate visible prostitution
and convert the type of tourist visitors (and perhaps expats living there) from "Mongers" to "Families"
and at least in the short term are willing to sacrifice whatever businesses that are unable to weather the storm.
