A lot of businesses closed in Sosua

Maybe we can get the High Caribbean to open again....that place was a blast.

Hey, while we are reminiscing, perhaps Moby Dick can host a fashion show?
Were you around for The Copacabana, at the entrance of One Ocean Place?

addressing the closing hour issue.

I cant see how the closing hours affect prostitution, when there are places like the Jolly and Brittania that don't let the putas hang out there, yet are affected. Seems they should focus on the places with issues. It's like closing my restaurant because the restaurant beside me constantly gives patrons food poisoning?!?!?

She stated how "prostitution" "per se", is NOT the problem that the authorities are addressing, "after all it is legal and a woman should not be prohibited if that is her ultimate desire". It is the current manifestation of it and the disorderly atmosphere on and around Pedro Clisante and now expanding further away that is causing so much concern.

Perhaps they are moving to other areas because the putas are being hassled by the cops ILLEGALLY.

She emphasized that a fair resolution to the problem is one of her greatest concerns even though many choose not to believe her.

You can't for one moment tell me the "Good Mayor" of Sosua knows nothing of these illegal shake downs???

They have targeted certain places that were the "worst " and some of them are now closed.
For something that is not effective, it certainly has the whore mongers squealing like stuck pigs that their sex tourism will no longer save Sosua, so it must have some of the desired effect, no?
It is very true that the businesses not being targeted in the war on whores also suffer if they want to be open late. That is called being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Unfair? Sure. The collateral damage of the urban renewal effort that want to bring more family tourism, DOMINICAN TOURISM, and retirees to Sosua.

I suspect that is just part of the strategy.

It is what it is, and so it goes. Knowing does not mean being in charge.

The being in charge point speaks to - "She emphasized that a fair resolution to the problem is one of her greatest concerns even though many choose not to believe her." Why would you believe/trust/follow someone who advocates illegal activity as they proclaim they are cleaning up illegal activity?

Whether Neuman has control or not over the hours and the clean up, she has yet to say publicly where she stands. She keeps repeating that the orders come from SD, but takes no stand to help out Sosua. She is a sheep and will follow what SD tells her. Her speech that NY-DR Commuter posted is the same as she said two years ago when they had closed the street. However at that time, more businesses were involved as well as the motoconchos and putas and they were much more vocal.

I spoke with many Dominican business owners on Pedro Clisante and most are not going to these meetings as they say they are a waste of time. Nothing changes and the voice of the people doesn't matter anymore. When Domincans start backing away you know things are bad.

It is wise not to trust any politician anywhere. Did you see what Cabarete had for many years? Do you see what has led the US during our lifetimes?
Just assume what they say is a lie and be pleasantly surprised if things turn out for the better. That is the best we can do.

I couldn't agree more, the earlier closing hours accomplish nothing except lost revenue for some businesses and increased revenue for the casino.

Perhaps.

I have no idea.

I was asking specifically about the Esplanade project. I'm still interested in what their targeted demographic and business model is?

I was hoping NY-DR Commuter would address this as he seems to have insider knowledge about this particular project. (Can't help but use another Trump analogy: Maybe it's going to be the "fittest" project in the history of the country?) (;-)

And I rode by there yesterday afternoon. Didn't appear to be any activity (construction or otherwise) going on?? Is there a timeline? I always have friends wanting to visit looking for recommendations.

The owner/investor of the Esplanade project are personal friends. The local commander came by and stopped the work till the proper permits are issued (read between the lines here). They are furious for they had a 125 man work force brought to a halt! The tourism minister gave them the go-ahead to start. You know how it works here.

They have a soft opening set for Jan 15. I have a $100.00 wager no-way!!!

Their market will be NY and yes a single/families mix. The owner runs a few properties here already and knows his clients.

The investor (this if just one of his many projects) is now working on low-income housing complex with DR banks mortgages. Will be in the Playa Dorado area. He has many more in the works. He has a large team here doing their due diligence on different idea, projects, developments.

If you’d like to meet the guys may I suggest you go to their “movie out nights” for the kids in different barrios on the North Coast on the week-ends. Yes, they do a great deal of charity and humanitarian work here also.

http://www.nochedecinegratis.com/lista-de-peliculas/

He is a believer in the North coast.

So something along the lines of say, Club Residential or Las Canas? (But it would be hard to compete with the Las Canas pool - someone once told me it was the largest in the DR?)

Sure I believe you, nicely paraphrased indeed - it almost looks like you wrote her speech for her in the first place !

But I don't believe she has nothing to do with all this goings on in Sosua...

bu,t but , She was only "following orders" .... so you know how that goes.. she washes her hands of the guilt

( I removed whatever was deemed " offensive" before , lets see if this one gets deleted)

They don't want counselling - they want money!
Who knows maybe " counseling" is the Brand name of a Baby Formula/ leche ?
that must be it

I'm curious. What is the targeted demo for La Esplanade? And what type of business will it be?
(Or is that like Donald Trumps plan to defeat ISIS? - " Secret, but it's going to be fantastic, trust me!")

I originally posted about this project (#1127 in this thread) because I saw it mentioned in another thread. I had known about the project for some time but did not want to post anything here until I discussed it with the owners. Once construction started it was obvious it would be mentioned so I posted the information I had.

From what I was told the project is going to be developed as a "high-end" all inclusive hotel including a restaurant which is also going to be open to the public. The property will have a "sports" theme including fitness and training facilities. Their targeted demographic will be active/athletic vacationers and they will be providing services and activities on both Cabarete and Sos?a beaches.

I didn't feel I was at liberty to post the infomation I had until the project was mentioned here. Since "singletravel" categorizes the "owner/investor" as "personal friends", I will defer to him to post certain specific details of the project.

Maybe it's going to be the "fittest" project in the history of the country?) (;-)

Maybe.

It is what it is, and so it goes. Knowing does not mean being in charge.

The irony is that while targeting certain places that were the worst. They missed the place that is the worst. I don't care one way or another, but if they shut that disco down, I think the mongers would abandon the Sosua altogether.

Whoever is leading the charge whether its the mayor or SD, they aren't going to get rid of them until all their hangouts are gone. Even if they started jailing all the girls on the sidewalk in mass, the guys would still come. This isn't 1983. They aren't dependent on walking around and picking girls standing on corners. The internet and smart phones changed lots of things for better or worse.

You seem pretty well informed about what went on at these meetings as well as the issue at hand.
There is certainly many takes on the issues for sure and who might be responsible

Were you actually present at both of these meetings?
One would assume you were to have so much inside information to share.

I was at the city council meeting, I attend almost every meeting that is open to the public and several which are not. I also attend most of the meetings of the various business and neighborhood associations of Sos?a. So the information about that meeting are my own observations.

I was not present for the president's visit to mayor Ilana Neumann's home. However, a friend of mine, Edgar Tomas, who has a local television "news" program was there and recorded the visit to present on his news program. I saw the unedited video as well as the version that appeared on both his own television program and several others. Edgar also told me who was in attendance and what was discussed. He was VERY excited about having this "exclusive" video as well as his two question interview with the president.

The January opening date and sports themes were what I heard too.

Interesting on the temp work stoppage though, since many here point out how clearly all levels of government are working towards a new family destination, and attracting investors...

Perhaps the 'targeted demographic' of La Espalanda, might fit well with the old Rumba crowd / new Bourbon Street group!

A few notes, the owner and investor are different individuals. "NY-DR Commuter" is correct with the theme and the investor is happy with responses (even those who believe 5 is not a team). It takes time, time, time to make things happen here and YES this is his first real big investment (paying a few people to run a free movie night is not a investment, but just doing something nice for the neighborhood). Many more ideas and plans are in the works, but few will make it, that's what he does.

He was happy I posted here and was amazed that so many people were aware. I explained how important and vocal the expat community is here and so I've asked him to post here (or a team associate :)) with weekly updates. I don't want to speak for him and deal with those who don't appreciate what he trying to do. But knowing him (I've told him how crazy he is myself and he has thick skin) he will accept all comments.

But don't confuse owners with clients . . .

The work stoppage was ordered by a colonel in Puerto Plata. Just because the government wants to clean up Sos?a's image, doesn't mean the corruption has suddenly gone away. It is still the same filthy corruption through "all levels of government".
