As I sit here at the el embajador, I can say business is booming. Several large conventions this week. A very large cosmetic and model convention which caused me to suck in my gut around the pool.

As I said above those types of events are booked way in advance, and those hotels are usually on point in terms of their relationships with conference planners. Where you are seeing the market come apart is for hotels which are lower down the food chain. I'm staying at an AI on the north coast for US$ 59 per person per night, and honestly it is amazingly good for that price. Jaw-droppingly good. The staff are working their socks off to give amazing service. The issues are a) north coast connectivity b) low season, and this year ultra-low due to cost of living crisis and c) the hotel desperately needs a refurb. The staff were telling me that everyone has had their hours and pay reduced, they are all absolutely desperate for things to pick up.

To be honest I'm far happier at an amazing-value US$ 59 a place than I am at a US$ 250 a night place which is just delivering what it should be for that price. My key metric is always value for money. I know that others are happy to spend a fortune because their happiness is more determined by other factors, like the feeling of knowing they can afford somewhere that's more expensive. But for me it's always value-for-money.

I do question where this will end though. If staff are being laid off and having their pay reduced because things are so quiet, it's really bad.

Well you get what you pay for. I do not know anyone who seeks accommodations because they are expensive. Although 59 dollars a night with food will not keep the riff-raff out. On the contrary,.every loser from the union 129 local fork lift operators association will show up and eat all the breakfast chow and throw up in the room. This property has an army of employees that have been here fir years. They are not paying the entire staff with a lackadaisical business plan.

I'm sure the military officers association would be far better behaved in the AIs...nothing but tea and crustless sandwiches! :)

Please let us know which AI is that.

Its the Viva Tangerine. I am going to do a trip report but I have to say it is way better than it should be for this price. I have never seen entertainment teams working so hard and it's a lovely happy atmosphere. There is a convention of Dominican journalists so there are a few famous faces from TV here which is causing a lot of excitement.

To get the rate go onto Booking.com and make sure you are logged in as it's a Secret Deal. I think the rate has gone up since we booked but you should find about $70 pppn on dates up to Christmas.

My whole point is that you don't always get what you pay for. Very often you pay for a name or a reputation. If you look at the hard and soft product in my $59 a night place and compare them to the hard and soft products in, say, Hyatt Zilara which is charging over $300 a night then it's hard to justify the difference. In my $59 a night place the bed is super comfy. The food is surprisingly good. There's a lot of entertainment and it's good quality. I am a few steps from one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. There is food 24 hours. And a show. And a disco. And yes I know that the Hyatt is very good but is it so good as to justify paying 5 times the price? As a hospitality person that's exactly the math I do. I can definitely afford both but I know that I won't be happy if I stay in the Hyatt because I will constantly be comparing to how amazing my $59 a night place was and feel that I've been cheated.

For this trip I shortlisted Casa de Campo hotel, Hard Rock in Bavaro, Royalton in Bavaro, Viva Tangerine in Cabarete and a self catering option Stella Apartments in Las Terrenas and I am sure I made the right choice with Viva.

"24 hour food, a show and a disco no less" our hotel expectations are completely different.

I would rather stay at a truck stop on the Jersey turnpike!

I am here with kids for a birthday celebration. The Embajador would not have been a good choice for this trip. We wanted a party and our idea of entertainment stretches a bit further than sitting in an expensive hotel and spending the entire day posting bitchy comments on DR1.

The chef just made a massive paella which was delicious. Remember we are talking 3000 pesos per night per person all inclusive.

Come on, enough with the back and forth...back to the topic of "Airbnb".
