Thanks Playacaribe2 and lifeisgreat. It is interesting that it was posted on the Air Canada Vacations website, but there was no press release on the main Air Canada page (where I looked for it.) The only press release on the main Air Canada page relates to cancelling flights to Hong Kong.

That was my point initially. When I googled Air Canada cancellations, everything I pulled up related to that and Air Canada's response that they were not cancelling flights.

The fact that they turned around a day later and actually cancelled flights is baffling.

The Canadians I meet all seem like normal good people (well the English speaking ones I mean, the others not so much)
So why does the Canadian government treat its citizens like petulant children in need of 'time-outs'? Can't they just quarantine Quebec?

Please don't say it's to control this virus and save lives.
This time it was not a government decision or intervention. Air Canada made the decision probably based on empty seats.

No the decision wasn't directly made by the government, but the government is encouraging economic suicide through its over-the-top restrictions

Air Canada just cancelled my Feb. 01,2022 flight to Santo Domingo. That flight was a little over 6 hrs.
Heeding Trudeau warnings over Covid-19, their excuse is/was, they didn't want to leave any Canadians stranded and unable to make it home.
I guess Canadians in Punta Cana do not apply!
I called them back to rebook the same trip. Now they have me overnighting in EWR and leaving the next morning via United Airlines at 8 A.M.
This flight is now 20.5 hrs. plus hotel, meals and ground transportation.
Once again there was no mention of flights to Punta Cana.
Just checked their website and flights to Punta Cana are still listed, including the direct flight of a little over 6 hours, saving me 14 hours.
I could spend that time in the sand & sun.
I will call them regarding changing a third time to the shorter direct flight.
My only fear is that they end up cancelling all flights to Punta Canada,...and United Airlines keeps on flying to SDQ.

Yep, our flight to Samana was canceled today and thus our annual 3 week retreat to Samana and LT is off for the second year in a row.
We spend a lot of money in the local LT economy in those 3 weeks annually. I feel SO bad for the average hotel or restaurant worker that is being adversely affected by these decisions.
We have met many Dominicans in the service industry over the years that are good family people and they are being affected by this whole mess so much more than us up North here who are simply missing out on a retreat.
My heart goes out to them.
For the Dominicans its a real world problem. For me (us) its a first world problem. But regardless its a problem.

It's only just over an hour's drive from Las Americas airport to Samana airport, shouldn't be a deal-breaker.

Las Terrenas seems to be suffering badly, at least it was almost empty when I was there just before Christmas. I think this is more to do with the lack of French than anything else, things are not good in France and I'm not sure they are even allowed to go on vacation.

El Hijo de Manolo

It's outrageous, egregious, preposterous!

Yes France is bad......I hear they are even rationing baguettes, the standard 'kiss kiss' is banned and poisson d’avril is canceled for 2021

By the time those dates are here, peak CV19 will already have happened and just shy of governments admitting the endemic live with it nature of the beast. They will be a day late and a loonie short on that.

Canada is not banning travel.
They are just making it incredibly difficult.
When we booked in July the only requirement to return to Canada was a PCR test within 72 hours of travel.
When the new variant emerged the socialists then made it mandatory to have a PCR test at the Canadian airport of entry. This is after just having a PCR test within 72 hours.
We had a 1.5 hour connection in Toronto. How the hell are we supposed to land , de-plane , clear customs and get a PCR test in 1.5 hours. The rules just kept changing to the point people starting canceling their flights and the airlines in turn started canceling flights.
Its a joke but whatever....

AC announced today that they are cancelling several sun destination flights from now till April 30. The DR destinations are Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata and Samana.

Punta Cana is still up and running for now.

Amazing how the common cold is shutting down the world
The worst part about the internet is that it gives a free soapbox to the everyman who cannot make an intelligent contribution so they revert to worthless lies and a thinly veiled political agenda.

The good thing is the ignore button so you leave this reality.
Nice to take out the trash from time to time.
