Lets face it, who wears corn rows in DR? The white tourists and beach hookers. This is typical cuero (hooker) fashion in DR. The white women think its caribbean style, yet its not a dominican style. Only the tigres on pasolas from the worst barrios wear cornrow and hookers in the north coast. So please, stop saying its dominican fashion.
AZB

Hahaha, well it's not american fashion anymore, the only people I see in NYC wearing cornrows are crooks facing a judge, you'll find inmates with cornrows. I don't see any women in the corporate setting wearing cornrows, you may find nicely braided hair, but cornrows, huh huh.

What should he do? - Make and write the rules himself? - If he did that then he would be a fired.... Think about it!

If Forbes is correct the doorman has been fired.........which in the DR means the corn rows lady had better exercise caution if a family's breadwinner is now unemployed & she is deemed to have played a part in it..............

No, DAKRA, I wouldn't expect Mr. Bullen to necessarily write the 'rules' himself. I would, however, expect any person of reasonable education (& Mr. Bullen must have had a reasonable education) to a) be aware how things are done in the country where he is acting Ambassador b) share such awareness with his staff & c) challenge 'rules' which seem unworkable.

I just wish the US Embassy put the same energy into bringing to justice those responsible for the murder of their nationals in the DR. Remember Lloyd Robbins? Each time they are encouraged to do so the standard response is 'we can't get involved in an issue which is purely for Dominicans to sort out'. Seems to me the Embassy can't have it both ways. I understand exactly what SKY is saying at post 97.

I am sure Mr. Bullen HAS had a decent education - you don't get to be Charge d'affaire normally by being ignorant.
I am sure also that Mr Bullen is well aware of how things are tackled in this country & that he should have discussed this quietly & in a diplomatic manner so as not to cause offense but still get his message across.

That being the case one has to ask "Why did HE have to make this statement? Could it not have been made by someone a little lower in the pecking order?" I think when the true facts emerge (if they ever do because this might be 'swept under the carpet') that he had a decision made from above which HE had to follow (unless he had a personal agenda he wanted to bring to the fore). Does the 'Young Lady' have some pull over him or other high ranking Embassy staff? Is she related to someone who has 'rank' or 'influence' in the Diplomatic Corps? Something, somewhere is smelling decidedly fishy as a high ranking career diplomat would not make such an obvious blunder as this. Maybe he has a desire to leave the country & this is one way of ensuring that 're-location'??

I hope a GOOD investigative journalist from The US comes down to investigate the background to this ill conceived statement - should make interesting reading! ~ Grahame.

My best friend in the DR is black and well dressed, Collared shirt, nice shoes ans slacks but no matter how many times, he tries, he is not allowed at Praia because he is Black and yes the doormen are darker than him!
The doorman just say straight up. "You can't come in cuz your black".

I also once went to Monte Cristo, a popular disco off Lincoln and the owner, came to the door, (Greg) and told my mulatto friend from NY, he couldn't let him in because of corn rows and this was to African for his club...
M friend FREAKED OUT!

In NYC the doormen lie... lol :)

That's the difference.................

you know in the DR a LOT of thing get done that really arent supposed to be allowed....but because rank and money have their privalage they do . That should not be a supprise to anyone that has even a little personal experience with the DR.

when it is a pretty common thing for the police to shake motorists down, and little is ever done about it, despite the very common knowledge of it.....and cops actually are criminals on their off hours, and not much is done about that, and district attorneys and custom agents are murdered, and it take a monumental effort to even get an investigation rolling.......does anyone think that a night club with a racists attitude will mean much to anyone??????????

even if the foolish US EMBASSY makes a statement.....most people will think "are you kidding"......so the owner "fires" the door man for a week, and sends him to punta cana for a little R & R .......

look at the excessive force many police have used, that WE KNOW OF , that have hit the news and been out in front of us all.....and those issues are hardly ever ADDRESSED , much less fixed!!

how much effort does anyone think will be put into fixing this slighting of a person based on their race!!!

they dismiss it so easily( even though they only did because it was the US Embassy) as a HAIR dress code.....see there, no race issue ha ha ha

I don't believe many discos don't let people in because they are blacks. this is not true. The real reason behind rejection at the door is because the person is a chopo (ghetto looking). Just look at the picture of rodney king in a suit. No matter what you put on him, he still looks ghetto. The doorman is also from ghetto so thats why he is paid to keep ghetto people out. There are many dominican yorks who dress in american ghetto fashion thats because their families are also from ghettos in DR. So when they appear at the door, they are easily picked out. You can put an armani suit on a ghetto tigre but you will notice, it just doesn't suit him. There is always something wrong with him, the way he walks, the way he stands, simply the way he carries himself; something is just not right. I am not simply talking about blacks, i am talking about white trash as well. they just can't blend in and pass for a gentleman.
So please don't tell me your dom york friend in nice slacks was refused entrance because of his skin color. I know better because I live here and I see those types everyday. The truth is, many of these same people who are refused entrance at the door have no clue what they are doing wrong.
This is just not about skin color at many discos, its the class that counts.
Now there are establishments in DR that will only cater to upper-crust white dominican crowd (notice: not white expats or tourists- so wipe that grin off your faces-hahahaha).

well hello buddy. let me tell you about the upper crust...I like the filling , I hate the crust anyway!!!!!!!!!!! upper lower what ever....give me the filling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dont use never!!!!

there are plenty of doormen who refuse people based on race....dont kid yourself.

Most of the people turned away are for the exact reasons you suggest...for sure......it is easy for people to understand, wether it is a class thing or just a targeted crowd thing.....

but dont say blacks arent turned away in the dr from some palces just because of their race.....I dont buy it.......

I love your little neat catergories for all things brought up here !! ha ha ha ha, but we know it isnt as neat(nor as black and white ha ha ha) as you say..

I love the litmus test to see if I am acceptable...

dress kinda on the edge and see if i can get in some place......love that instant gratification ha ha ha

I am not disagreeing with you, just stating that most places, open to public, will allow decent classy black dominicans. I mean the educated classy black dominican not your usual drug dealer with a 1000 dollar suit and croc skin shoes. I don't care if the person is son of a rich guy in NY. The chopo is a chopo regardless of his income.
I think I have moved around in clubs far more than you rob so please give me some credit. The educated, tastefully dressed blacks will be allowed but a chopo looking person will be refused entrance.

This thread is not about most places in DR, but about a particular one by the name of Loft. The owner can make up any excuse that he wants, but there are other documented cases of people being excluded from Loft based solely on skin color. The excluded person has been told so in no uncertain terms. ;)

AZB is correct in his assesment of how Dominican society judges people in everyday life. If you are a man wearing earrings, or long hair, braids, cornrows, or other "out of the ordinary" hairstyle, have tattoos, or wear baggy, gangsta style clothing, you will be looked at in a different light. That's just a fact! Those people are looked at as undesireable because they are considered low class, criminal, drug using/selling types.

Let's face the fact that similiar incidents like what happened at Loft are happening everywhere in the in Europe and the US.

It may be because of dress codes, hair styles, appearance in general (being drunken), social class and yes, as well racial reasons, who knows.
The difference is, if the doorman there doesn't want you in, the standard words are for excample:
- For members only
- Do you have a reservation?
- Sorry we have a private party tonight
- Sorry we are full
and so on, to avoid any legal action against the Club or Disco.

Here in the DR they are less smart or just don't care.

Ok, here are the types of people who can get in. All people pictured are dominicans (except for myself in orange jacket):

Now you really think these types of people would feel comfortable with people who look like gangsters or have corn rows etc? the club would become a tigre carwash hub the moment these decent people stop coming and corn rows take over.

A "Tempest In a Teapot"!!!!!!!!

or. "Much ado About Nothing"!! Also comes to mind!!!
To those of us who live in the DR this is just a "Tell me something I don't know" kind of thread!
C'mon Robert, you just stuck in that part about "US Law" to pull your "Uncle Sam's" coat a little! It has little bearing on the real story, "Racism Is alive and well in the DR"!
Don't you just love those post from the people who spoend a week at an "AI" then say how they love the DR beacause all the people get along no matter what colour their skin???
This thread is a "Dog Bites Man" headline in the DR!
AZB,I was in Santiago last weekend. Pleanty of UBHs at "Passion",Casa Blanca, and all the other so-called "Hot Spots"! "Ahi Bar" Too!
Best thing was the Leon Jimenes Art Exhibit, and dinner at "Camp David"! I recommend the "Pollo Cordon Blu". TASTY!
Stayed at Hotel Gran Almirante. What's the big deal about that hotel???????????
