The prepago plan works the same as well with switching back and forth between Wi-Fi.

You know it wouldn't be too bad if Claro decided to just renew the same data package I had previously purchased. I could live with that with no problem...………. but NO Claro gives me the data but charges some astronomical rate as if they are doing me a big favor.

Are they still charging 295.00 + tax for 1 Gb extra when you finished you data plan? I was spending 1,500.00 pesos with Smart plan with 100 minutes, then switched to Viva with 200 minutes plans for less money than Claro, then switched for only Data plan for less money and now Im using prepaid plan and spend just for 580.00 every 28 days, I realized that no body is calling using minutes, now every body call over whatsapp or voice notes so why spend all that money. I have always 100.00 pesos in credit in case i need to make some normal calls and usually last long up to 2 months before I have to use it.

Get the post paid plan and you will never look back. Free roaming in 20 countries, including the US. It is the same as using the phone in the DR. And the roaming in the US is top notch. Just set it to AT@T instead of automatic. Also all calls to Claro lines both cell and land are not charged to your minutes. Talk as long as you want.

Not sure what they are charging but that number sure seems like it may be right.

I buy the 7 day plan. I don't remember what day and at exactly what hour I buy the plan plus i don't keep track of data usage. Last time it happened I kept having data and it seemed strange but it never dawned on me to see if plan expired. A few days go by and i check my account balance. Something like 1,500 pesos vanished in just a couple days. Sure enough, plan had expired and Claro being so kind just kept selling me those extra 1 Gb deals without ever asking "would i like to proceed".

That Viva is starting to sound better and better. I am not a big phone talking person so talk minutes is no big deal. As long as i can contact Uber and use whatsapp I am good to go.

Until the regulators in this country compel all the carriers to share their cell towers and strong signals signals can be received anywhere by everyone, everything else is a moot point.

In my case, I would need a Claro plan for when I am at home, a Viva plan for when I can get their faster sometimes better/faster/cheaper connection. If I lived 1 km further down the road I could use Viva and would probably be quite happy. But I don't and a big hill blocks Viva connectivity at my house despite their being a cell tower perched atop this specific hill that I could almost hit with a rock if I wanted to.

Claro wouldn't work at my first house 15 minutes further east than where I am now so I had to go with Orange. now I have Altice which only offers Edge speed data connectivity in my location. Getting a Claro account for internet in my first house was enough of a hassle to ensure I never went through that process again, so I was/am stuck waiting for Altice or who ever owns it next to plop in a tower where I can finally get a 3G/4G signal where I spend most of my time, at home and I would appreciate not having to walk outside to make a phone call that doesn't fade away mid-sentence.

The prepay plans are all designed to get you to slide another bill into the top-up machines as often as possible - like a slot machine - but without the chance of ever being a winner.

With Claro if you have credit in your phone and the data option is on and you do not have active an internet package they will suck will money too. so be carefull with that Bob k.

Thanks for what is probably an obvious tip Riva_31! I am, as my son would say technically challanged and was wondering why my minutes seemed to run out to fast since I usually put on at least 200 RD at a time and talk more on Whatsapp on my U.S. phone so I don't need data on the cell with Claro. It is now turned off.

That is just right next in the conner actually Indotel said that they must share renting their tawers and prices for rent must be regukar prices, this was sigested also by VIVA as they are smaller comoany is harder for them expand their coverage.

Sharing towers is just that, sharing the metal construction. The transmission equipment installation and operation as well as backhaul is still dependent upon each carrier. It would still be an advancement though, because that would eliminate the long process required for obtaining permits for each new tower.

I recently got a text from Claro about Navegacion Libre. Here are some details - https://www.claro.com.do/personas/servicios/promociones/220/.

Translated by Google it reads:

Activate your Free Navigation by dialing * 112 # and you can browse without interruptions on your mobile Prepaid at RD $ 1.50 per MB, including taxes.

Steps to follow to activate Free Navigation on mobile Prepaid

Dial * 112 # from your mobile.
Select option 4 - Free Navigation.
Then option 1 - Activate.
Choose option 2 - Prepayment / Control.
Select option 1 - Yes (Confirming that you want to activate the service).
Whenever you surf the Internet free every time you consume 500MB you will be receiving an SMS notifying your consumption during the month, by provisions of Resolution No. 069-17 issued by the Indotel.

If you want to have more information about Free Navigation in your Claro Prepaid you can contact us by dialing * 91 from your mobile, free of charge.

Mine was activated but it can be deactivated by choosing Option 2 in the last step. I have only just deactivated mine, so time will tell if it stops Claro taking all my remaining pesos when my internet package runs out.

Altice seeks to sell Dominican Republic unit to cut debt
French cable group struggles to reassure investors after share price halves

Altice says it has initiated processes to begin disposals as early as the first half of next year © AFP

November 23, 2017 4:00 am by Harriet Agnew in Paris and Nic Fildes in London
Altice, the French cable group, is planning to sell its telecoms network in the Dominican Republic as part of plans to dispose of non-core assets to reduce leverage and improve its financial position.

Altice has marked the Caribbean business for disposal and plans to sell it in an auction as part of its efforts to cut debt and reassure investors after seeing its share price halve this month, according to three people briefed on the plans.

The sale process of Altice Dominican Republic, a subsidiary of the Luxembourg-based holding company, is still in the early stages and plans could change, one of the people said. A spokesman for Altice declined to comment.

Earlier this month, Altice founder Patrick Drahi reinstated himself as chairman and the company’s chief executive resigned. Poor third-quarter results compounded investor concerns over Altice’s €51bn mountain of debt and highlighted continuing operational issues in its largest market of France.

Last week Altice announced it planned to shun expensive dealmaking and de-leverage its balance sheet by disposing of non-core assets, including its mobile masts in Europe. At group level, Altice’s gross leverage after a spending spree that saw it acquire more than 30 companies in the past 15 years stands at 5.5 times earnings before income, taxes, depreciation and amortisation.

Altice said on Monday that it had initiated processes to begin the mobile masts disposal as early as the first half of 2018. It has also earmarked for disposal a small business in Switzerland focused on business customers that is valued at a couple of hundred million euros, according to two people familiar with the plans.

Altice bought the Dominican Republic unit in 2013 for €1.1bn from French telecoms group Orange. It delivers mobile and fixed services to more than 4.8m customers in the country. In 2016, Altice Dominican Republic recorded €717.5m in revenues and €185.2m in operating profit — roughly 3 per cent of the group’s overall revenues last year.

Altice outbid Cable & Wireless, now part of Liberty Global’s Lilac division, for the Dominican business. Lilac, which has been separated from Liberty Global in part to pursue acquisitions in Latin America and the Caribbean where it operates, is seen as an obvious buyer for Altice Dominican Republic, which generates huge amounts of roaming revenue from the tourist trade. A spokesman for Liberty Global declined to comment.

On Tuesday Altice announced another management shake-up, this time at subsidiary Portugal Telecom, which will see it replace its chief executive in Portugal for the second time in four months.

Claudia Goya, who joined Altice in July as chief executive of Portugal Telecom, will become chairman of the division, and Altice’s chief technology officer Alexandre Fonseca was promoted to chief executive. Paulo Neves, Portugal Telecom’s chairman and former chief executive, is leaving the group.

Mr Drahi also sought to reassure Portugal Telecom’s employees about Altice’s commitment to Portugal, following claims by a rival that Altice’s plan to acquire Media Capital, the media group that owns national commercial broadcaster TVI, is dead.

Mário Vaz, chief executive of Vodafone Portugal, said in a national newspaper on Tuesday that he believed Altice’s acquisition of Media Capital had been “rejected” and said it would be “bad for the country”.

A person close to Altice said the deal, announced in July, was still being reviewed by antitrust regulators and should be completed in the coming months.

In an email to Portugal Telecom’s employees, seen by the Financial Times, Mr Drahi wrote: “Portugal is today one of our biggest bets in the world. Our commitment to the country, to the economy and to innovation is to continue to build a strong, solid, modern and capable Altice/Portugal Telecom group.”

Mr Drahi has spent the past two weeks trying to reassure Altice’s employees and investors, telling them that the group is financially stable despite the decline in its share price. Its debt is guaranteed at 85 per cent with fixed rate and has no major maturities coming up for renewal until 2022.

Interesting way to avoid tower sharing... I think a non-Telco operator of towers would not be required to share towers with Telcos (e.g. CLARO, VIVA) . But who knows...
