What are you guys arguing about ? I am lost....

That Cuban educational system is better than Dominican ? Bob I agree that it is overrated and they lack of many things but, be honest on that one....

More homicide in PR ? Gorgon you know it s true LOL. Ok may involve less gringo but isn't because PR gets 10000 times less tourists and expats.

Hey, that's all I've been say " that it's over rated and the stats are not to be trusted" 1, 136 homicides in PR in 2011. Does it matter if they were PRs or not?

I am willing to wager that Puerto Rico get thousands more "Touristas" a year than the DR!
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
Since "Ricans" are US citizens the "Expat" number is less.

The only reason why PR gets less tourists then DR is because PR does not have a Sosua or Boca Chica. Take away all of the horny tourists and DR will see a huge drop in tourism.

The crime in PR is different then DR I can t explain it, but PR is a million times safer then DR.

Everybody that visits PR always come back very happy and never once complained about the crime, now DR can't say the same in DR is not will you get robbed, but when you robbed and you will get robbed. The 1st assault will be when the taxi driver over charge you.

Just for the record the police in Puerto Rico warned me not to camp there. I do not think that the discussion of WHO has my back is gonna help here. Nor is it fair to discuss Puerto Rico vs DR since PR has for years had massive help from the US which the DR has not had.

I saw a police officer.. I mean officer in the sense of high rank... when I was at the Clinic Abreu to have the burn treated. I told him about the 20 doctors who were attacked in the neighborhood and how frightened that made me... since I now really cannot walk at night. I asked him to talk to the chief and put more street cops out around the Conservatorio de Musica and National Theater. He told me to call chief and tell him. I said."I am telling you. You tell the chief"

True about the horny tourists, lol. Also, compared to DR, PR is too expensive period.

I wasn't hating on PR JMB, I know PR very well and studied a semester at UPR (Mayaguez). I never felt unsafe there, but the number are there. It is true that in PR, every one is not trying to get a dime out of you.

And I willing to bet the 3,519,986 of that number was Canadians making more then 1 trip to find a spouse or get their existing spouse to Canada.

will somebody please tell me why Canada does not make the DR a commonwealth of Canada that way Canadians don't hold up the line at the airport going through customs.

Because the "tourist" number would be the opposite, with millions of dominican "tourists" "visiting" Canada in the first year...LOL

LOL I did not think of that part of the equation you are 1000% right. I can see it now JMB773 walking in Toronto or Montreal and a Gaugua ride by with a Dominican hanging outside the door asking me "where you go"

yeah they will turn Canada out.

I feel like we walked into a different movie theater and are now stuck at the airport

we had this great screenplay going here, wiht the dental union going to nyc to hire a hit on the american free dentists who were undermining their business

and now i want to go camping in mayaguez

but.. here. there have been some good points here. on the ethics of missionary work and how to come in.

i translated for a group of chiropractors who went with the non profit IDDI. They worked very hard and took NO VACATION at all. So when they went back to the US their only impression was of the poverty of the Dominican Republc.

This place does a bang up business in volunteerism,, feel good travel.. which is now selling for one thousand dollars per volunteer per week. BIG BUSINESS in HAITI where the Irish come over having raised five thousand POUNDS each for a week.

So whatever their religion or motivation or anything. this sort of group should have some sort of professional escort, don't you think?

VERY bad publicity. Bad for the DA ME everything business of foreign aid.

Screenplay idea.. everyone in Haiti says that the US state deparrtment employees make the place more dangerous on travel warnings and everything to increase the pay. So the dentists were attacked with inside information from the US State Department. AFter all , they were walking within a block or two of the Consulate. Right between the EMbassy and the Consulate. This area has a MASSIVE US footprint.

if they are in a danger zone, the state department .. which includes USAID,, gets hardship pay,.

right now, this is an award post. A playground post. And STATE wants everyone to understand that it is no longer such a post but a real front in the drug wars. Despite all the INTERPOL intervention and drug busts in the last two years, cocaine trafficking here is up 800%.

These guys were going out to party at dinner. I mean I know that they were since I was with the chiropractors.

Not that they did not work but they were walking out to just be tourists.

This is a major front in the drug wars. Probably has not been over the many years that they have been walking but it is now.

Security measures have to be increased for visiting Santo Domingo

therefore the entire staff of USAID will now go on hardship pay

weekend passes to Caberete are cancelled.

only Punta CAna is authorized

ok.. take it away in the rewrite room, DV8 and let us see if any of the other pea brains can keep up with us ,

4 years of university and 4 years of Dental School. Plus any continuing education the dentist chooses to take.

Old joke here in the US, What do you call someone who fails out of medical school? A Dentist

I think that is Does not get into Medical School,,, right? I think that the dental boards are just as hard as the medical boards?

at least that is the way the joke was told in the dental school

puerto rico is a sand spit compared to the DR, you can drive around the entire island in a day if you want...from mayaguez through ponce to fajardo...

look at the maps again. puerto rico is a sand box compared to the national forest of the DRl We should only be compared to Jamaica and Cuba. maybe Mexico and Costa Rica and Panama...

MA, you may be right in your statement about those dentists being too well off. and someone clearly agreed with you, tipped off the robbers and took away all the riches.

but do not judge free dental work badly: it is a necessity here. only some public hospitals will offer free dental care and even then one would have to fork out for medicine and products use, hence just about the only thing you can get free is extraction. but as i mentioned before extraction is fatal for the well being of the entire jaw, so to speak. teeth and made to be tightly placed together. a loss of one leads to weakening of other roots and opens possibilities of infections.

paid health system in this country is indeed good. but not every one has either insurance nor money to pay for it. for many folks those charity events, be it foreign or dominican, religious or not, this is the only opportunity they may ever have to see a doctor, receive medical care and get medicine. my brother in law, currently a president of rotary club POP organizes events like this quite often, if different areas of puerto plata province. some of the patients he helps have never received any medical attention before.

Bani, Azua, Pedernales, Moca, Sanchez, Barahona, La Vega,San Juan, Hato Mayor etc. Why would a tourists want to drive around and see these places? Quantity does not equal QUALITY. The DR has a lot of dead space, but if you enjoy driving around an island just to be driving around an island, knock yourself out, gas is not cheap in PR.

San Juan, Ponce, Caguas Vieques & Culebra are the only places I visited when I am in PR and they are more then enough for me and my family.

btw I do not want PR to become the number One place for tourists in the Caribbean never, because their is no upside for Puerto Ricans owning this title. The DR won congratulations. What have they won Bob? Another fun filled year of Dominicans burning tires.

the sand dunes of Bani are more beautiful than Third Beach. And Vieques and Culebra are about your only beaches. And let us not talk about radio active camping or hostile natives./

You have El Yunque. We have the Samana Peninsula

my family has owned property in Boqueron for twenty years.

And it's in Pedernales...

I've travelled all around this island. I think there's much more to see here than in PR. If you're looking for beaches, well they are almost everywhere in the world. But I like the fact of having all sort of natural attractions at short driving distances.

Annie, there most certainly is free (or low cost) dental care provided by Salud P?blica! I have brought groups of dentists in once or twice a year since 2005, with no problem like this and with the cooperation and permission of public health.

Salud P?blica has been very grateful to have my groups come in and provide dental care to the poor in barrios. The university generally donates unused medicines and supplies to public health after the mission is completed, so they are happy not only to obtain assistance in treating the poor, but also to have access to supplies and medications.

Why would you think that such work is unneeded? Obviously, public health doesn't want the group treating the better-off. That isn't a problem however, since we are very careful to have those who have no other resources be the ones treated.

So why do these dentists not just volunteer in Detroit.. where there is no public health dentistry?

welll, maybe they do.

just not a lot of them.

This country's free medical is bETTER than that in the UNITED STATES
