Why is it that every time an announcement is made like this that somebody turns it completely around? Seriously, take a chill pill. Pichardo, as always, thanks for keeping us informed, I for one really appreciate it!

Flights as usual

(...)according to the US Government trafficking has decreased since the DR bought the Tuscanos to patrol their airspace.

This sentence could also be read:
".... according to the US ...//
Government trafficking has decreased since the DR bought the Tuscanos to patrol their airspace."

But whatever.
Those birds (@ Chip: They are called TUCANOS) didn't and won't change anything.... Have you ever seen one flying?

Why do I even bother with you buddy????

I never said their was no more drug trafficking only that it has lessened a great deal in the DR.

I guess with you if there is one drug trafficker caught or one person mudered here in the DR the sky will be falling soon.

This is nothing more than wishful thinking.

Dominicanos HOY: Articulos[tt_news]=78577&cHash=d6c9332aff623cbc49f3eb074adb0178

"... (DNCD), que durante los primeros nueve meses del a?o 2012, ha incautado cerca de 8 mil kilos de coca?na.
La cantidad de drogas confiscadas en lo que va de a?o iguala la retenida durante todo el 2011, que alcanz? los 8 mil kilos".

Certain people will now say that this is so, because DNCD is working more efficiently now....

Traffic sure sucks over there....
I hope they figure out what to do with all the traffic then build the mall. I scream foul when ever I pass that street to go to Nacional, Super Rico or my other favorites...

We all know where the money for this fantastic new mall is coming from. You guys can argue about whatever. I also see the point about some frustration over the reluctance of companies to take on an infrastructure project.
I dont know if this mall is a good idea. It will be good for the construction companies and the cement and rebar mafia. It is a safe place to park some drug money.
Its kind of dumb to build a mall or another condo complex right now if your money is not so clean since it is sending all the FBI, DEA and IRS (treasury agents) into a tizzy chasing down whom are the principals.

Whatever.....

...the negatives get under the positives skin.

btw, many, many areas of the country are not seeing any benefit from the new progressive DR. The rich are, the poor are not. I for one am very happy there is some positive progress in the DR but enough with the malls already. It has become a running joke at this point.

Some private development is better than none.

It would appear that some of you would have us wait for the government to do something? Do people really believe like Obama that only government build things and that the private sector should wait for handouts?

Never mentioned government...

It would just be nice to hear about a bit of development in some of the lower income people in the country. The malls and such only benifit the richer people both for investment and jobs. Trickle down to lower income people is minimal with these projects. It would be nice to see some of this increadible amount of money spent on these malls, being directed.....oh yeah, can't make/move money with poor people. Like I said...all I seem to hear about is malls...with american companies in them..

There is a lot of things that would be nice to happen here in the DR. Since we can't count on the government all we have to hope for is private development and for all it's supposed flaws malls and upscale development are actualy very beneficial to the local community. Apart from jobs it will also attract foreign development and retiring Dominicans to return not to mention limit young professionals leaving the country in hopes of something better. Malls add quality of life, jobs and attact development.

Furthermore, anyone who grew up in the States in the 70's saw the effect that malls had on the local communities - while certainly some smaller businesses went out of business they were replaced with vital economic hubs. As someone who has worked in the States in development for almost 20 years I can vouch for how much local community leaders and planners in the States would do what they can to attract malls and such. Therefore, if American local politicians and planners have long seen the value of such developments I don't see why we should expect similar developments in the DR to be any less positive on the local economies.

Nonsense from Chip again.....

'Malls add quality of life, jobs and attact development.,

They lower quality of life, take away jobs and repel development..

If you look at world happiness indexes countries that are without malls lead.

I saw for myself that malls encourage gang culture in the excluded, destroy jobs and cause endless pollution. Local economies suffer as local stores close and the mall owners trash markets with hoodlums to establish their monopoly.

Also the owners don't allow free speech, no more than 3 people can enter together, you are searched etc. etc.

Some malls take photos of everyone entering.

US local politicians were bought out certainly.

We're talking about Dominican malls, not from wherever you are from.

And they are still better than what you are proposing because what you propose is fantasy.

OK... I PROMISED NOT TO GET INTO THESE ..... THE MALL THREADS CAUSE I GO NUTS and I get vacation points.

Chip.... knock it off! You Know better then to enter MALL threads unless it is with me.

Yappy.... YOU too. They provide a service to someone and make someone money and are not anywhere near energy kind nor ... kind to or for 90% of the people. (no figures or pictures or graphs or news statements from Google. Just common sense.)

I'm done. Thank you.

I will take pictures next time I go to the malls. Bella Tierra is dead all the time. The food court at Plaza international does ok, but you never see anyone walking around with shopping bags.

Furthermore, I think before any advanced degree is given in economics that there would be a requirement that the student would have run a business in the black for at least 3 fiscal years, with their own capital of course. That should weed out the theorists with their redistribution and nanny state concepts.
Then I qualify in spades...

Last time I mentioned that PICHARDO told me Dominicans have a special way of creating revenues and profits without customers.

It's a secret only Dominicans know...

No offense buddy but that's the chicken before the egg.

People can't afford to buy homes unless they have sufficient money. This country needs all the commercial development it can get. Economics 101.

Nonsense. In Hong Kong the government rents social housing at low cost with a subsidy to the poorest.
Historically HK built much housing for people with no money at all.

With a pool of people reasonably well housed, reasonable education, health service, public transport entrepreneurs come in and employ in say the garment industry at low rates. The workers are efficient and in time both the entrepreneurs and the workers prosper. Those with ability are able to afford to buy more luxurious housing etc.
This is thanks to the leg up given by the government to poor and near destitute people.

The same applies to other countries as well - housing before shopping malls.

All future malls should be reduced by at least 1/3 of their design specs.
That way they might be full and productive instead of having so much wasted unused space.

Collinas Mall is pretty active and alive with people when I go there during the day (I don't go at night).
Yet, it still is vastly empty on all floors except the floor Jumbo is located.

Pichardo will show pictures from the Internet of many people on the escalators.
(They are headed to the "Limited" food court or the parking lot entrances)

Bella Vista Mall is like going to a Haunted House, when you walk the empty corridors your mind keeps thinking something is going to jump out at you from the dark, empty spaces.

I will take pictures next time I go to the malls. Bella Tierra is dead all the time. The food court at Plaza international does ok, but you never see anyone walking around with shopping bags.

Good things come in small packages !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't bother with taking pictures, Pichardo will shoot you down with his anti-shadow gun.

He will accuse you of taking the pictures BEFORE they open because the cleaning crew are working.
(Because their are no customers to get in their way).
