Senator Antonio Taveras Guzmán (Santo Domingo-PRM) became the first senator to formally reject receiving more than RD$1 million a month in extras. The Santo Domingo province senator Antonio Taveras Guzmán on Monday, 12 October 2020 officially resigned the perks. Taveras says he will not benefit from the “Social Compensation Fund.” He said he will concentrate on his role as a legislator. The fund grants around RD$1 million extra per month to the legislators for carrying out community work at their discretion. Taveras says he is also resigning to extras on holidays, such as Christmas, Three Kings Day, Mother’s Day, and others.
He recommended the money be allotted to a chapter that is used for legislative work until the new budget is passed.
Taveras said that the Social Compensation Fund has nothing to do with his responsibilities as a legislator.
