I'm going to Santo Domingo at the end of this month and still haven't chosen a hotel. I'm looking for an affordable gay friendly hotel that will allow me to have guest aka buggarones lol I thinks thats what they're called. So far I've heard about Adam Suites and Hotel Duque De Wellington. But I've read mixed messages about both. But I haven't ruled them out, but I also want to know of other possible options. Also which hotel hotels have a good amount of buggarones? Whether it's from experience or hearsay?

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks

(Side note I don't speak Spanish)

Casa Sanchez is gay friendly and an AWESOME hotel. I don't stay anywhere else unless i book too late and there is no room.

It is in the colonial zone but in a quiet area. The owner and his staff are beyond Excellent!! They have a gym across the street with lots of eye candy i am sure you would enjoy ;-)

I just looked on Tripadvisor and they want $130 a night...damn that's nyc prices! lol thanks though
But how's the gay scene in general in santo domingo?

There should be cheaper rooms than 130 a night, i have never paid that. Usually around 85-90

There are quite a few gay clubs in the colonial zone, make sure the ones you go to have a pretty good cover. The other ones will have riff raff and shifty prostitutes who only want your$$$

I only really went to les bars, can't remember much about the gay ones.

joselowe, feel free to ask about gay-friendly hotels, but ixnay on the buggarones. DR1 is not a "dating" site.

Hotel sanchez is where you need to go. I just wrote a review of it on trip advisor. It's gay friendly and they got an awesome gym.

Check Anthony Montgomery's website, Monaga.net. It has all of the information relating to the gay set in the DR, particularly, the capitol, you'll need.

Jose, may I suggest you read the many threads about sankies. Not only are they entertaining (like a train wreck), if you transpose the genders it is pretty much the same thing.

Check out Monaga.net It will have the answers for most of your questions.

DR1 is never that helpful for gay stuff.

Harleysrock is right, but you should know that gay people are welcome here on DR1. This particular forum skewes to the retirement age and the generational difference in attitude prevails.

However, once you read those sankie threads you will see that they help travelers.

If you stick around, and I encourage you to, you will get lots of info on DR.

Thank you. Can you direct me to any of these threads? I search sankie and saw a bunch of threads, but none with that title

Were you allowed guests?
I don't know because I have never stayed there. But each hotel has its policy on the website. Sometimes they charge a fee for you to have a local guest. Read the website policy. It is there. However, don't think that if you book a double room you can have a different guest whenever you want. All guests must be registered. Dominicans carry a cedula.

Have you travelled internationally before? May I ask your general age? What about budget and length of visit?

If you want us style luxury the Sheraton and crowne plaza fit the bill. They won't bat an eyelash about two guys sharing a room. But they also know what's up.

It may also be of interest to you that you will find many other African American travelers. And, for some reason many of the gay guys are African American. To me it is a striking proportion.

Hi, I work at Casa Sanchez so hopefully I can give the right answers. I shall try not to advertise, but there is an ad on DR1 in any case. The rates start at US$79 per night, plus tax, which brings the lowest rate to US$ 100. This includes breakfast, use of the gym, free WiFi, free water. If you are seeing a US$ 130 rate, this is probably because the hotel is busy and we don't have the cheapest rooms available. The suites are like apartments inside a hotel, and the cost is US$130 a night plus tax. If you go to the website - follow the link on the ad in the DR1 listings, often it comes up on the home page - you can then send a message and for a longer stay, we will do deals on rates.

Like anywhere else, you're going to get what you pay for. Casa Sanchez has an amazing reputation, check it on Tripadvisor. But it pays the staff above the normal salary (double or triple in some cases) and provides a lot of extras - the breakfast is really nice for example, and the gym is big and free. Casa Sanchez is about the same price as the other nice boutique hotels - Villa Colonial, Beaterio, Palacio.

Regarding overnight guests, Casa Sanchez does NOT allow anyone to bring in overnight guests, so no bugarrones and no chicas. If you arrive and check in on your own, nobody is allowed to join you. All of the nicer hotels have the same policy. Why? Firstly for your safety, it is extremely dangerous to bring prostitutes back to your room (and yes folks they are prostitutes), you have all your belongings and your money and your passport there. Secondly because those kind of people often bring other problems - taxi drivers demanding money, police demanding money - and the hotels don't want the hassle. We always recommend that if you meet someone, you take them to a cheap hotel and leave your belongings in your room. The person will also not know where you are staying, so won't keep coming back and hassling you. You can get a cheap hotel for a couple of hours for US$ 10.

If you want a cheaper hotel, I would suggest Adams Suites. It is very well run, and Gilbert provides excellent service. The downside is noise, it's right opposite the gay clubs and the street gets very busy and noisy after midnight on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and this goes on until 5am. So it's hard to sleep. And secondly no pool. I think, but I'm not sure, that Gilbert allows you to bring overnight guests back, but he will definitely help with this if you email him.

I would avoid Duque just because of the location. It's on Independencia, so it's a little walk from the Colonial Zone, but this is in the dark and on a street where you could be mugged easily, very few police.
