I swear on the King's profile (get it?) that this is a serious question.

I've always been a fan of sardines and could almost live on them alone. Almost.

I've always bought New Brunswick because they seem to be some of the best. No shortage of other brands, but I haven't tried very many.

However, now JUMBO in their infinite wisdom have decided they want to dominate the sardine market, apparently. They have begun stocking
Lider Brand sardines which is their store brand, and now the sardine section looks like the Colgate toothpaste section - a giant wall of nothing but one brand and flavor of sardines.

I'd love to spend a few minutes in a closed room with the idiot who made that decision.

So anyway, Any sardine lovers here? What's your favorite?
love king oscar…. Onions rye bread marble if available.

Buy her a proper fish and chips. She will love it.
Agreed. My favourite fish feast. Where I live, it’s always made with fresh cod. I prefer tempura batter on my fish. Lighter and the taste of the fish comes through better. Fish and chips in Britain was interesting. You never knew what you were getting, cod, hake, halibut, etc.

Maimon is touted as the go to fish place but I’ve had excellent fish in many DR locations. One of my go to places is the restaurant in La Isabella owned by a retired army officer and his family. Drop in, order your fish, and head to one of the small beach huts for a cold beer or two. Chat with the locals while they catch the fish and prepare it. I prefer my fish poached and fried plantain chips on the side.

I bake my fresh cod. Layers of cod in a covered chafing dish, seasoned with Greek seasoning, and covered in a mixture of olive oil and my favourite bbq sauce. About 40 minutes at 400 degrees. Great on a bed of pasta or rice.

I like sardines, my wife not so much. Anchovies on pizzas for sure when available.
Brunswick, Lider, whatever..

But she loves Bacalao and I will not ever touch that.
I'm not a big fan either but my old man used to make this baccala salad on Christmas Eve as part of the 7 fish
meal. It was very good. However not the same as the poor quality smelly stuff you get here in DR. My ex wife in the capital years ago made these bacalao fritters and they were excellent. With cilantro, green onion, peppers and other seasonings. I would eat like 20.

7 fish dinner, 20 fritters? I’d nap for an hour after a feed like that. Gives new meaning to the mafia expression, “He sleeps with the fishes”. 😂

I knew there would be somebody else who likes them.

And now the former Brunswick sardines carried at Playero are gone. They were 40 pesos. Now the have Brunswick Part Deux now wrapped in a wax like paper and selling for 90 pesos. I'll pass. I'm not paying double for the same project because it's wrapped in a useless paper which is removed before you can open the tins.
Pola has Brunswick sardines ( the original en aceite de soya ) for 55 pesos. They won't last long.

I'm almost afraid to ask who likes the stuffed squid packed in their own ink? Smoked baby clams?

Tried deep fried squid rings once. Like chewing on a bicycle inner tube. Baby clams, tuna, in a salad is a nice touch. Had grilled octopus in Mykonos years ago. Surprisingly good. Pickled eel isn’t bad in small portions. Lobster is definitely king. Atlantic lobster not langouste. They cook langouste too much in the DR restaurants for my taste. The small beach bar down by the old Luperon resort used to make a delicious langouste pasta. Last time I was there, they only served beer. There was an Italian guy who had a small hut on La Isabella beach. He served incredible drinks and desserts there.

My mom loves sardines, my FIL loves arenque (?). Both like simple meals as they get older. I can't with either, I have tried but I can't. Canned fish (seafood, sardines, tuna, etc..) I have tried to like it but no. I do not really like fish at all. Strange but true. Lobster, shrimp, crab, maybe scallops or calamari, that is all the seafood I eat.

Yes if you're a long time guest of Najayo, it all tastes good. Jk, but I have made it with white wine and capers and it is much more palatable.
Also when you spend the day walking in la Loma. Cooked right next to the river, it's all good. My wife's family has fincas near Rio Boba de Loma Quita Espuela up from SFM. It's beautiful up there.

I know they gross some people out, like anchovies (which I also love), but I’ve loved them my whole life. My dad and I liked them with a nice chunk of crusty Italian bread. I still buy them and have them occasionally for lunch in USA, but at night in DR because we eat our main meal around noon. New Brunswick are always good, I don’t do the flavors (mustard, etc), and I switched to water packed because of calories (oil definitely better, soya or olive). La Sirena always has a lot of them on sale to choose from from January on, leading up to Lent.
Enjoy this made me think of your post
