Let me tell you clear and simple: the well to do people here live much much better than anyone in that range in USA. Comparing apples to apples. I see top notch tourists like you all the time in santiago streets. You folks see monumento, calle del sol, then meet a chopa and go to her barrio, maybe visit a ferreterria and now you think you know it all.

Joking aside I believe that a few people here felt a slight when "ghetto" which I would assume they really mean those from lower economic status are the main transmitters of STDs. I hear SOME logic in this, since there is obviously more economic necessities within the lower economic levels and therefore are prone to share needles and offer sex for money or drugs. BUT, to say that upper class are not risk takers because of status is ludicrous. Intermingling with what is considered a primary taboo is what causes the cute princess daughters of the middle-upper class to go out with these thug-like boys. STDs among kids 14, 15, 16, 17 in the U.S. is on the skyrocket rise and I KNOW that DR is no different. Boys are just as careless just to prove themselves in this utmost macho society.
Now if you are talking about a 40-50 year old middle age person in DR then perhaps you're right to some degree. BUT the young are as reckless as any in the world and check the facts and you will see a tremendous rise in STDs among the youth in ALL social levels in DR.
