Well not quite-I went into the Banco Progreso surcursal in Agora Mall today and talked with a rep there. They told me they have a technical problem on their entire ATM network for international cards and the pin code is not being transmitted-accepted.

The lady there told me they are going to have this fixed in the next week.

So hopefully, Progreso ATMs will be back on-line to international cards by next Friday.

I think you're right Jimmy.....

Probably best to only use ATMs were you can swipe the card and pull it out, but they seem to be hard to find now. A lot of the ATMs are where you put the card in and it holds-locks it in the reader, but not inside the machine like many older ATMs.

I don't know of any ATM I have used recently where you can just swipe the card. All of them that I know move the card inside the reader. Some just read it and spit it out and continue with the transaction after you remove the card. Best. Others keep it inside the reader until the transaction is completely finished. The Banco Leon ATM that took my card seemed to think I left my card in the machine and walked away. I think most ATM's in that situation move the card completely inside the machine so someone else cannot simply walk up and take your card. I went on line and deactivated the card.

Has anyone tried a Banco Progreso ATM this week so far with an international card? I will try later today and see if they fixed the problem by now.

Tried once again at Galeria 360 in SD to withdraw money from the Banco Progreso ATM this evening.

No dice. Still claiming the pin code does not match or whatever.

Progreso has not fixed the problem for international cards this week and I would just avoid their ATMs now as they appear to have gone 'offline' for those cards.

I have now moved my business over the Banco Popular ATMs. Everyone claims they will only do RD$10,000 max at each withdrawal. However, when I did a withdrawal there this evening, it gave many options up to RD$10,000 and then Other as an option as well. So my thinking is that it might be able to go even higher per transaction depending only on the limit set to your card. I will test this out soon as it may be possible to do even RD$20,000 or higher per transaction.

Update Over & Out.

The maximum withdrawal allowed does vary with location. It may be that you might find a BP ATM that will give you more than 10000. Here, though, I have never found one. But, I have now found two Nacional ATM's here and it is good - 20000 per transaction. And, no fee. Works for me. I started avoiding BP ATM's because they have the highest fee - 195 pesos per transaction. Others charge less. But, as you say Progresso with lower fee does not work at the moment. Their ATM in La Romana gave me 20,000 for that slightly lower fee, so I was using them until the crash. When I could not get to the Nacional ATM in Multiplaza.

There are no Banco BHD branches by you?

Yes, but as I explain in one of the posts above, the limit here in the east at the BHD machines I have tried lately is 4,000 pesos. And, the last one I tried that has given me 20000 in the past ate my card. Went to bank nearby to try to retrieve it, thinking maybe the guys that service the ATM would leave it there, and of course it was not there. So, for me now, no good BHD. Thanks for the suggestion though.

La Nacional ATMs are a concern as well as the card comes out of the machine very slowly as though it is going to get stuck. This is at Galeria 360 and Agora Atms.

The ATM of La Nacional doesn't work with chip cards at Galeria 360, but will work at Agora-strange.

Jjj. True - same thing here. Slow. But, that ATM is attached to a bank, so I think they might save the card there if it gets stolen by the machine. But, just like everything else here, what happens likely will be different than what I might think. The Nacional machines here seem new and good and work with chip cards. That's the exception here.

This sh&t with the 3000 and 4000 peso limits is fairly new here too but widespread. Tried Banreservas the other day too and the limit was 3 or 4,000.

Been thinking if the banks are acting shady then I may have to actually Xoom money to myself in order to avoid all that. I normally take out 10K-12K at one time. Paying 3 ATM fees(@ 195 pesos each) for the local bank and the home bank($?) then the currency translation sounds unnecessary if I can just pay $4.99 to send 10000 pesos to myself

Well unfortunately, it looks like Banco Popular ATM's will only do RD$10,000 per transaction as I tried $RD15,000 and it said it was above the limit of $RD10,000.

Anyone try Banco Progreso ATM's to see, if they are working for international cards yet? Last I tried, it was still not working and giving the pin code is wrong message again.

Another twist. Yesterday used one of the two Nacional ATM's I have found in Bavaro. And, it charged me a 150 peso fee. Never has this happened before. Never a fee in La Romana nor the other Nacional ATM in Bavaro.

I was just thinking yesterday, when La Nacional would finally get in the game like all the other banks and start charging ATM fees.

So now there are zero ATMs with no fees in DR and Banco Progreso appears to be off-line for international cards, unless someone has an update.

I am not sure all the Nacional ATM's will now charge a fee. The other one I know of here did not charge the fee the last time I used it - about 10 days ago. And, have not tried in La Romana lately. I think it might just be that one I used yesterday - I have never used it before, so I don't know if it always has charged the fee. It seemed to be an older machine. I had trouble figuring out how to use it - it had conflicting instructions - insert card and withdraw card - or, insert card and leave in until transaction done. It took me a few minutes to make it work. It was not like the other Nacionals I have used.

Well I attempted to withdrawal out of a La Nacional ATM last evening at Agora Mall-SD. The ATM popped up a message right at the start that claimed that it could not read the chip card reader and to cancel the transaction. Fortunately, I was able to get my card back and proceed to the Banco Popular ATM-which will only dispense RD$10,000 per withdrawal. I am hoping that Banco Progresso gets their ATMs fixed to allow international cards to get money from them again, but who knows when that will happen, if ever.
