hmmm..yeah. its def true that MOST dominicans dont have light colored eyes. those that do are a minority.

now that minority does usually have peculiar eye color that results from all the racial mixture on the island.

i too have seen people w "yellow" eyes. Its usually a light amber-ish color that we end up calling "yellow". its not actually yellow like a sunflower lol

in my family theres a light, greenish, amber eye color that pops up randomly here and there. its not the kind of color you see all the time elsewhere but i have seen others in the DR w them.

I think the Dominicans with green or other weird/light eye colours, just stand out more, so you actually think they are in bigger numbers then they really are...

I have seen some beautiful eye colours in the dr...from grey/blue to green to some kind of yellowish brown and all the ?normal? variations of brown. And by the way, I love the normal variations of brown, especially the really dark brown ones or the lighter brown ones on really dark people.

By the way, I read somewhere on this post that the more u go into the mountains the lighter the people get, I noticed that myself too. Why is that? Coz its not the richest people living there...

I think the mixed gene pool and what comes out is so interesting...not just in the DR (although it is much more apparent in countries like dr and brazil) but also in any random country.
For example skin colour depends on 7 different genes and then not all have the same power. To be 100% white or 100% black you have to have all 7 genes the same (Most white people don?t have all 7 white genes, neither do most black people have all 7 black genes).
I remember a story about 2 white parents that got a black (brown) baby. And yes he was the father :p. Neither of the parents knew of any black heritage in their family and neither had any trace of colour in their appearance or skin colour. And yet in both their genes was something that got repressed in each of their apearance, but when they were combined it came out (I think they said it was a chance of 1 in a billion or something).
And thats just SKIN colour, there are still all the other features like eye colour, nose, hair etc.

.

I think this is because back in the slave days only whites were allowed to move around. Many whites also hid in the mountains probably running away from all the fighting that was constant in the island at that time.

Certainly many of the older families in Jarabacoa moved there from La Vega/Santiago during the Hatian invasion. Many of these were of European descent. The general population has darkened through intermarriage, but certainly there are still many white( in Dominican eyes) people in the mountain areas.

My son's eyes are the same color as the girl in the picture and my daughter has blue eyes. I have brown eyes and my husband blue. According to all the genetics charts both my kids should have brown eyes.

No, not necessarily - even though you're brown-eyed you obviously carry a blue-eyed recessive gene which combined with your husband's genes may result in a blue-eyed baby.

You have the Bb allele while your husband has the bb allele, so there is a 50/50 chance of a Blue eyed kid!

It is impossible for you to be pure brown and produce a blue eyed child.

Yes, I never knew I carried the recessive blue because both of my parents have brown eyes. I think it must come from my mom's side of the family because my uncle (mom's brother) had a blue eyed daughter also. Both of her parents are Dominican, the mom has greenish eyes and my uncle brown.

Sure, the Dominican gene pool is not homozygous, and thus you will see colors other than brown. I will say however that anywhere in the world, human eyes only come in a certain color range. When you see someone with an extremely unusual or vivid eye color, there is a good chance they are wearing contacts.

Noone was talking about who was more beautiful or whatever. Not the point.

But in Brazil you will find more than in the DR people who have exotic features(dark skin and light eyes of whatever color and/or shade) among the general population at large.

I WILL REPEAT FOR THOSE...
WHO DON'T,
CAN'T,
OR REFUSE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM SAYING FOR THE SAKE OF HAVING AN EXCUSE TO GET DEFENSIVE.

GENERAL POPULATION AT LARGE.

I am talking about the average dominican walking down the street in Santo Domingo or Puerto Plata or wherever. Yes, there are exceptions. But for the most part its' varying shades of skin color with brown and dark brown eyes.

But as per usual, everyone here has an exception to the rule.

Surely you see the irony that people say they have seen exotic looking eyes in DR and you say all the exotic eyes you have seen were contacts. When people point out that there are plenty that have natural exotic eye colors, you spout some assinine crap about their mother being a whore.

When people point out that they were not whore/client, you move on to how Brazil has more variations of looks.

The irony is the only girls I have seen with colored contacts, were hookers.

You need to get out more.

B) My family is chock full of people with light color eyes ranging from green to hazel and there is one cousin whose eyes actually change color based on his mood, I'm not kidding.

my eyes are basically greenish blue (turqouis some say)
when i am relaxed they go a lightish blue
when feeling normal they go greenish
and when riled up they go a steel colored blue

but when i open them up i see the colours of the rainbow :)
my dad was irish and my mother is french & italian

as far as genes go...they make the most sense....BUT
there IS ALWAYS the exception to the rule :)

If blue eyes are so common in the DR, blue eyed gringos from the U.S and Europe would not stick out like a sore thumb in the DR.

They're not common in the DR but you can find plenty of them following la Linea Noroeste on the way to Monte Cristi. Also use that trip to eat some chivo guisado catched and cooked in la Linea!!

We took that drive last January - wow, chivos everywhere! We bought some fresh meat to bring back to SD, yummy!

There are many Dominican's with blue eye's. If you go to el hospital Dario Contreras, there is an aguacate vendor called chichi, with the most beautiful blue eyes, they are lovely :) A distant relative of mine, from San Cristobal has great blue eyes and blond hair. As per the family history two generations ago a Dutchman from St. Martin fell in love with her great grandmother and pakata, ojos azules! On my mother's side of the family the soft honey color of the eyes is enchanting, oh my.
