I also use Magic Jack and works perfectly in Sosua, Puerto Plata, Santiago, even in wifi areas. I even use it when I'm in the States in a hotel rather than use my US cell phone or the hotel phone. Should do a commercial for them I'm so pleased. Re-upped for 5 years about a year ago.

I have used TEL3 for years. Many deals you hear of are land line only or other gimicks including taxes etc. If my wife in the DR needs to talk with me she rings my phone here a couple times and hangs up. Either I hear it or if I'm out the call shows on my caller ID and I call back. TEL 3 is 13 cents a min. to cell phones and 9 cents to land line. You give them a credit card number and it automatically recharges when you have about 3 mins. left. You use local numbers in your area, set up what phones you want to have the service--(home, cell, work etc.) and set up speed dial numbers for the phone numbers you call. 3 cents a min. in US. Check out their web sight. Have found it very good at a reasonable cost.

People, you still believe I skype?

several years ago when there was alternative to skype it was the best one, but today, we have many options to choose. That’s why - 100% - against skype!

There are great service by google – the Hangouts. It is twice cheaper and gives good call quality. You can also find others, less popular than Hangouts.

I recently tried callnspeak, have anyone tried?

If compare rates (I called my friend in Australia to mobile number)

I am still considering moving to the DR in a few months and my family and friends are wondering what the best way to stay in touch with me is.

How much does is cost to call the US from the DR on a cell phone or home phone? And does anyone know any cheap or moderately priced calling cards my family and friends can use to call me when I live in the DR? Or calling plans from major telephone companies?

Anyone have an info on this topic??? Thanks....

If your friends and family are using a land line through verizon they have calling plans for the DR. Also if you have cell phone and a verizon plan you can pay an additional $40 per month for an international calling plan. You are better off using e-mail and skype.

If you are travelling in the DR and on facebook you can message or call if you have wifi. Wifi is everywhere here. Hotels, restaurants all have wifi.

I have a dual sim unlocked phone where I always purchase a Claro sim card when arriving before I leave the airport. For about $40US it gives me a couple of gig of data and few hundred minutes of talk time with a DR phone nbr. This is usually enough for a week or so stay when I'm there and the internet service allows my phone to do all of the internet stuff it needs like checking email and all of my VOIP apps work like WhatsApp and Skype, etc.

WhatsApp...
I have to agree with Guillermo. I have been using WhatsApp for 2 years now, and haven't spent one Dominican peso (or American dollar). Messaging, photos, videos, phone calls....all free. I was introduced to it by an Italian woman in Juan Dolio, who used it to speak to her friends all over Europe. At the time, I felt like I was the last person in the world to begin using it. It's a great service.
