t would have been better in my opinion to have pipes installed horizontally divided in the middle & swinging from chains. Say a 3" steel pipe suspended every 2' from 1 inch chains so that it would make a very loud bang and likely dent a delivery truck but put no stress the bridge if hit.
Of course a dump truck might just say heck with it - but I fear if a heavy truck impacts that temporary high-limit restrictor it will break free and damage a moto of oncoming car.
I doubt it would seriously damage the bridge but it would not help
You are quite right ! this is a stupid idea. It's only a matter of time before someone hits those height restrictions and causes further damage to the bridge.
4" pipe suspended on 3" chains - as they have on entry points to Road tunnels under the Thames in London - and I know they get hit !!!

What's the current status for transportation from Santiago to Sosua? Metro or Caribe Tours, are they connecting both cuties?
My Mom wants to enjoy this weekend in Sosua.

Yes they are connected by bus. The bus has to take the detour, so it takes a few more minutes. My wife went to the capitol last week and reported about 15 minutes extra travel time to Puerto Plata.

Will let her know so she can make plans.

I wouldn't be surprised if they start letting all traffic through the bridge soon. Just noticed today that they've removed the metal beam on the end that goes from Puerto Plata to Sosúa, so it's just a matter of time before someone decides to remove the other metal beam on the other side as well.

Did they remove it, or did someone hit it????

A truck hit it. I was behind the truck yesterday. (Obviously a very tall enclosed delivery van) The guards there were backing it up to turn it around. The West side was down to one lane. The guards should have done their job by stopping it but maybe they were getting refrescos or sleeping in the shade.
Fortunately the welds look like they broke cleanly and didn't damage the bridge
I expect they will put it back up ASAP

Hopefully they will weld it again using that portable mig Inverter I saw they was using on a YouTube video.
Welding won't penetrate.

In a few days I will be driving my van over the bridge or via the detour. Is the detour clearly marked and how much extra time will it require? I'll be coming across the Tourist road from Santiago heading toward Sosua. Thanks!

If you use the bridge please be really careful and proceed with caution. There's no telling what may happen.

If your van is the same size as a local guagua you will be fine to use the bridge. If it's any taller, like a Caribe Tours bus, no. The diversion is clearly marked, but I don't know how long it takes.

Cangrejos bridge construction is halted

The work on the Cangrejos Bridge is at a standstill due to the standoff between the MOPC (Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Comunicaciones, Ministry of Public Works and Communications) and owners of the land adjacent to the planned construction. The news of the halted work was announced by the provincial director of Public Works, engineer Carmelo Ripoll, during his speech on the program 'Todo Incluido', broadcast by Musa Visión, channel 10. The work has come to a standstill due to problems with the appropriation of the pieces of land. We had a good start, but now it has come to a standstill. Carmelo Ripoll warned that if the cases are not resolved by an amicable agreement with the owners of the land and buildings, rigorous measures will be taken.

Any one want to bet this bridge will still be in limbo a year from now ? Imagine the embarrassment to Abinader having this nasty detour through Montellano still plaguing the North Coast during the election polls.

Why wasn't the land secured before demolishing the old bridge ?
Bottom line the holdouts have a right to ask for what their property is worth, right up until the government says "No we won't pay that much, now it's ours and this is what we value it at and it is all you will be paid - now get out because the demolition starts tomorrow"

I am curious as to what additional land is needed which stopped construction for a bridge that was already there.
Why is it an issue?

Whatever it takes, just claim that land and move on. I expect rigorous measures soon.
Correct me if I'm wrong...

But aren't you a big proponent of private property rights?
