Getting back to the OP , It looks as if the port will be open at the end of the year - not sure about September

Olly and the Team

The port will be open October 6th, when the first ship comes in. This is all scheduled and will not be changed or open to ambiguity.

Entrepreneurs looking forward to the first cruise ship

Sunday, January 25, the reporter from Sos?a-News went to Puerto Plata and Maim?n to check out the progress of the construction of the cruise ship port. Newspapers say that in October this year the first cruise ships will dock in the new harbor in Maim?n. The mall with small shops and restaurants on the waterfront with mangroves have been completed. The small buildings are still closed because of course there are few customers. Visitors now come from the resorts Riu Merengue and Riu Bachata. The shopkeepers are certainly full of confidence. In October, when at least one to two cruise ships dock daily, it will be really busy, they think.

Construction on the cruise port is in full swing (even on Sunday) and a lot has already been achieved. The very long pier construction where two cruise ships can dock simultaneously is ready. In bad weather the cruise ships must however anchor and passengers will be brought to shore per boat. Also, Puerto Plata, Sos?a and Cabarete hope to benefit from the many hundreds of passengers who enjoy a cruise ship vacation. Currently in Puerto Plata, the historic center is completely renovated. They are also working hard on the construction of an amphitheater at the end of the Malec?n. The theater will offer 3,500 visitors a seat. The intention is to use the theater for various cultural activities.

In Puerto Plata a lot of work is being planned, some streets asphalted, the historic center renovated and the construction of the amphitheater under progress, it all has to be ready by October. The work goes on, though, but with many interruptions. The entrepreneurs of Sos?a and Cabarete hope the cruise ship tourists will visit both beach resorts as well. They think that tourists stay a few days in Sos?a, or Cabarete and then continue the journey with another cruise ship.

This seems a bit implausible. Most cruise ship tourist are usually middle-aged or older. Wonder if they want to go all the way to Sos?a or Cabarete. Both the city council and the foundation ADSS in Sos?a intend to organize additional activities in the evenings. This is to make the two resort towns more attractive for a visit.

i was under the impression that changing ships is not allowed under normal circumstances. death, accident, illness - fine, one is allowed to get off the ship. but one cannot leave one ship and get on another one as they please. so no such thing as "staying in sosewer/cabarete for few days and continue aboard another cruise"...

hmm... i talked to a family member who works on royal caribbean cruise ships and he said ship hopping was not permitted, hence my doubts. so all those new reports are a bit strange to me.

Of course it will be "different" for the DR. Right.

Carnival already has 3 excursions listed for Sosua/Cabarete:

1. Certified 2 tank dive in Sosua

2. Snorkling in Sosua Bay

3. Puerto PLata city & Cabarete beach wih lunch

Not bad considering Amber Cove port not yet in use.

9am to 5pm currently shown as time in port, which means the paxs would have to be on the ship before 5.

Don't be too quick to dismiss the idea that ships will overnight in Amber Cove. This is a trend that is becoming more popular with cruise lines.

Not quite the same thing, but I'm booked on a cruise that leaves Valparaiso, Chile, March 4, goes around Cape Horn, spends a day with the penguins in the Falkland Islands, and ends in Buenos Aires on the 18th. Except we get to BA on the morning of the 17th, so passengers have about 24 hours in BA before disembarking on the 18th.

"overnight" is not the same as "few days". and i am guessing the night is spent on the ship rather than in the hotel?

So that realistically allows for about 5 or 6 hours to be in Cabarete, a bit longer in Sosua.

It would be great if the ship stayed overnight, saw some cruises that did an overnight in Venice......unlikely in Miamon :(

dv8, It depends on the passenger, and the departure schedule. But I would think most would spend night on the ship. An excursion that takes passengers to a resort location for a day that includes dinner and a show at night, but returns to the ship, is more likely, I think.

I doubt there would be more than one night in a port, most passengers would not like that.

different type of ships, different business model. Carnival cruises to the caribbean are bargain basement ventures, low cost affairs. the cruise operator has to make the entire cruise a revenue capture affair, European cruises are generally more expensive, and the profit margins are greater. they do no have to snag every dollar they can to stay afloat.
