Not necessarily. North Americans think high season is in the winter, but some hotels do very well in summer with influx from Europe and other countries outside of North America.

Maybe the tour companies were not given much notice, if any.
I would expect those packages to be taken off the market very soon.
People who have to switch well into their holiday might be limited to the same company, but probably not, but otherwise it shouldn't be a problem to have the choice of other hotels offered by the tour company or get a refund.
The last time I was at Fun Royale, it was so dead that Sunwing asked me if I wanted to switch to another hotel and they had a few choices owned by different companies.
I would have had to pay a little more and get there on my own.
I would think that people who are forced to switch should be compensated rather than be required to pay anything.
There may be a few resorts that do okay but if Playa Dorada is any indication, it has been like a depression regardless of the season.
The information in the article clearly came from hotel staff who have been informed that some staff will be transferred to Paradise Hotel, Playa Dorada, some to hotels operated by the same company on the east coast & the rest placed on indefinite leave. The article says nothing about arrangements for paying liquidacion to staff; if you recall, when Breezes closed this became an issue (Breezes subsequently had a change of management & reopened several months later).
When people mention that money should be spent to improve things to attract
tourists, improve infastructure est., and the answer is why should we there will always be another plane load of stupid tourists, this is bound to happen. The high taxes, the never ending string of beach vendors, The garbage, The filth of off resort
washrooms, Barking dogs all night long, multipile prices at the stores. Went to a different country this year, you tell one beach vendor no the rest have enough brains to leave you alone, washrooms off resort have toilet paper and you could eat off the floor, no garbage all over, money has been spent to improve things to attract people,
no barking dogs allnight long, prositution has remained discreet and not in everyones face, same price for everyone, no special gringo prices at the stores, beautiful malls
with stores that actually sell stuff you would want not a bunch of over priced junk
you really don't need, no pushy Haitians trying to sell their over priced art that takes about 2 hours max to do, people that would go out of there way to help you and not expect something for it,and in some cases demand it, supermarkets full of fresh produce and fruits, furniture that was comfortable not a bunch of cheap plastic chairs all over or the backs so straigh you feel like your being push forward, and for very good beer from the supermarket it works out to .38 cents US a bottle. Maybe in a few years i'll go back to the DR to see if things have improved but in the mean time i'm going back tothe new destination, and no i'm not going to say where it is. I know people will not like what i wrote, but it is the truth and you know it is so instead of looking for a way to past the blame the Dominican way, they really need to do some work. I really use to love going because of the beautiful beaches and the lushness of the country but the rest of it just got to be to much.......

That article and the references to hard times would seem to indicate more than renovations and guests moving next door.
I think the sister hotel on the same property, Casa Marina Reef, will continue to stay open. The two hotels operate as one, and I suspect the company just wants to reduce its inventory down to 350 rooms from 700, as the summer/fall is expected to be very slow.
British Tour Operators, who supply the bulk of the tourists to the North Coast in the summer, have predicted a 30 to 50% reduction in number of guests for this summer. The Punta Cana area, on the other hand, will see a small increase.

So, you have visited the DR, placed 25 posts on DR1 and have chosen to see areas you don't consider to be fit for a tourist.... did you leave your AI? Did you meet with the real people of the DR? Did you get involved with the culture and the really 'green' beauty of the country? I very much doubt it as you would not feel quite the way you do, if you did. Don't want to know what "better" place you found but would be intrigued to know from where you visit from?
There is one thing for sure though - the Dominican Republic is NOT for everyone...

They have had a seperate section that allows "Guests" for over a year now.
Paying customers are better than empty rooms.
