I got curious about Viva so checked their website, they don't seem to mention LTE (4G) on their site and checking their frequencies on link below only shows UMTS (3G):

https://www.frequencycheck.com/carriers/viva-dominican-republic

(Note that their 3G is on 900, same as Orange, but not like Claro which is at 850, so check your phone on the same website above to see if it is compatible.)

Also one of their offers of unlimited data from their website here say:

http://viva.com.do/planjevi/

"Data Ilimitada, que se acomoda a tu bolsillo y a tu necesidad de navegación. Al llegar a la Data incluida en tu plan la data se degrada a 384Kbps. Tienes hasta 2GB de data para consumirlo como quieras."

So in effect it is not unlimited data at full speed, after 2GB the speed slows to 384Kbps.

Although they have another offer of unlimited data for your "APPs", as mentioned for 145 pesos /month.

http://viva.com.do/planes-prepago/

But I am not sure if this allows using it for all internet usage, like browsing, downloading stuff or hooking up your TV box and watching movies. Various telecom companies have a way of preventing this, I know in other countries an offer like this can only be used on the cellphone certain APPs.

But I have never use VIVA, so have no idea how it all works....

3G from VIVA is in 1900 and LTE is 1700/2100, I use VIVA and they have LTE in most of the coverage areas.

here you can see the coverage map http://viva.com.do/cobertura/

your s8 unlocked will work like a charm in DR or in any other country in the world. many people who are having claro signal problem are the same people who don't live in major cities. I live in santo domingo and visit santiago often, My LTE signal is rock solid and I get very high speed connection. The claro coverage is the best in this island.
I have 3gb data plan and 200 minutes talk time. I hardly use 50 minutes /month as all my calls are via whatsapp of google voice to usa. I use wifi when I am at home or office (both claro internet).
So do yourself a favor and get claro and claro internet at home as well. Now watch netflix movies at home and enjoy whatsapp calls or google voice calls via hangout app. I have been doing this for years without any problems. I live in santo domingo.

Yes, you are right Claro has the best coverage area, I switched to VIVA 6 month ago and Im happy their new network has very good quality of voice, and they are improving a lot the coverage area, when I was with Claro in inside my house was very dificult get service and with 2 bars of signal couldnt make or receive calls or Data, now with VIVA inside my house with 1 and 2 bars of signal I can make and receive calls and also text in whatsapp, according to that I think that VIVA has better quality on their service and equiments.

AZB, are you aware that now on Claro roaming in many countries is totally free. US, Canada, PR, Argentina, and most of Latinn America. That includes Data and calls. In otherwords it works in the US exactly the same as it does here. Also all Claro to Claro calls do not count against your minutes.

Explain please ....................... is this available for prepago?

Those new plans they called Indetenibles, if you have old plan do not have access to all new features avialble for free, you need to cancell your old plan and adquire the new indetenible plan that you want then you will be able to use roaming for free and everything else.

for Prepaid is not free, you have buy packages of data.

Took me 10 minutes in the main Claro office at the San Juan Mall in Bavaro to get the plan. And I have used it in the US for one month with no extra charges of any kind.

I use VIVA. and when I buy a phone I make sure that the phone has the frecuency that use viva for LTE and 3G, I can tell you also if your phone is Samsung S8 will work faster because VIVA has LTE MIMO.

That's okay, but do you have a link to any pages that mention the frequencies for their 2G/3G/LTE (4G)... !? (You must have read the ones you mentioned somewhere.... )

The link is not updated, VIVA launched a new Ericsson network like 3 months ago. I have a friend that works there and confirmed me that they use band 4 1700/2100 for LTE and for 2G/3G 1900

nice, I will look into it. I am on old plan but i may change to the new one. Tmobile gives me free data all over the world and I only pay 10 dollars / month by being on my brother's family plan. In usa I get 3gb data and all the minutes to call and I get free unlimited 2g data all over the world. I even got free data on a cruise I took 2 years ago. Whenever we docked on port at any island or even passed by an island, I was able to connect for free and use the data. It was amazing. I almost had free data on the entire cruise vacation on a ship.
i get one hour free high speed on delta flights and then get free whatsapp and facebook messages throughout the flight. incidentally, now delta gives free text whatsapp messages to anyone on almost any flight on gogo in-flight wifi system.
anyway, I will look into claro deal and see if my bill remains the same while I get the new added features.
thanks.

Well Cdn Gringo, I have a very good experience during my 5 years of having postpaid service with them, in fact it is very good because I was in the USA for 2 weeks in June and was able to use my phone while like I was here. No roaming charges whatsoever. But then again I pay 3400.00RD for unlimited calls to claro numbers, 7G of internet per month and 1000 minutes to call here, usa, canada, puerto rico and I can use my phone in 21 countries without free of roaming charges. To me that is very very good service. If you have had a bad experience with them, sorry but they are good. And by the way here in Juan Dolio I connect at 52 MBPS UPLOAD nad at 10MBPS download.
