I just heard all the airport support and frontline workers in POP where let go today and stranded people hanging around airport...

2 jets in the last hour over our house leaving POP. 3 noted earlier. Most likely I didn't notice some. Don't know anything about the what's, who's or why's. Usually but not always, when they fly over us they are Europe bound.

Might also be air force, heard/saw one yesterday. The difference should be obvious though, if one sees it

Commercial jet over my place 5 to 10 minutes ago. Flights still leaving so someone has to be working. Perhaps some staff was allowed to go home but I don't think the govt would allow the airport to close. Still lots of repatriation flights to come and go in the days to come.

These sounded like the heavy long haul that go to Europe that I hear all the time. Most air force have a different sound but may be. I'll run outside a look next flight. ;-)

I just checked the American Airlines site. All flights out of the DR to MIA have been canceled.

Just saw two flights take off, about 3 PM. One was a Sunwing jet, the other I don't know/

edit: POP departures website says JetBlue to JFK took off at 3 PM

We bought two tickets to Newark on Jet Blue for Saturday morning. Couldn’t reach United at all. We had planned to stay here, but watching what’s happening in hospitals elsewhere and looking at what’s available here in DR made up our minds.

Foreigner (Japanese?) collapsed / has been found at Malecon

An Asian-looking foreigner is lying on the Boardwalk allegedly with symptoms of COVID-19
Raúl Asencio
Santo Domingo, RD
An Asian-looking man, shirtless and without shoes and allegedly with fever or coronavirus symptoms, catches the attention of passers-by on the Malecon in Santo Domingo.

The man is believed to be Japanese and was completely naked, as disoriented, when another person gave him a pair of pants and a member of a unit of the Specialized Tourist Security Corps gave him a plate of food.

A 911 unit arrived at the scene and has been waiting since noon for Public Health to arrive to be taken to an isolation area or one that the authorities determine.

This is on the Malecon, in front of one of the hotels in the Capital, but it is unknown if you are staying in the area.

According to a man who came to the place and would have spoken to him in English, the foreigner undressed because he felt he was burning with fever.

The past week or so must have been tough. Stay? Go? Stay? Especially after what DIL had suggested.

Heard on CNBC that is HAS been announced.

The State Department is set to announce a Level 4 travel advisory applying to all international travel, its most severe warning, three individuals with knowledge of the pending announcement said.

The advisory, which appears to be unprecedented, would instruct all Americans abroad to either return to the United States or prepare to shelter in place, given the global threat of the coronavirus outbreak. Americans also would be instructed not to travel abroad.

Don't see anything current in print yet. This is a few hours old.

I am still glad I am here with my family and not left them behind. The garden is a tropical paradise

Seeing the havoc at U.S. airports and then trying to shop and function in the U.S. ???? NO way would I go anywhere; keep in mind that our home is here in the D.R. and this is where our comfort zone is.

You are right, it was just issued.

In addition, it says: On March 14, the Department of State authorized the departure of U.S. personnel and family members from any diplomatic or consular post in the world who have determined they are at higher risk of a poor outcome if exposed to COVID-19 or who have requested departure based on a commensurate justification. These departures may limit the ability of U.S. Embassies and consulates to provide services to U.S. citizens.

If you choose to stay, you are basically on your own.

I suspect, The US may suspend all air passenger travel in the near future. If you choose to travel internationally, your travel plans may be severely disrupted, and you may be forced to remain outside of the United States for an indefinite timeframe.
