They started the Covid-19 testing at STI today. My flight landed at 2AM and everyone that did not have their Covid test result either on their phone or a paper copy had to be tested at the airport. Test is not bad. They poke your finger, take a blood sample and the result comes out in five minutes. Most people who took it were negative. I did see 2 people with a positive test result. They were escorted somewhere. I don't know what happened to them. I did not see them again for the 35 minutes i spent in the immigration line. But over all, the entire process was not bad. From when we landed to taking the test to getting outside the airport, took 1 hour and 10 minutes.

I guess every passenger from the US is really going to back up the time to exit they airport if everyone needs proof or they rapid test.
I know of now machine that provides a negative result in 5 minutes. A positive (or false positive) result perhaps - and away you go to the Covid19 Hotel.

You are probably from a place that has cradle to grave so called free medical insurance. I am told most places are like that.
My home country and the DR are not like that.

I thought the blood test only told you if you have antibodies. If you have those you may not be sick now but were in the past. What are they going to do with someone who has antibodies but may not actually be sick at the time?

Antibody tests have a high false negative because many people with covid19 don't develop antibodies. It's an area of active research to figure out how such people are able to clear the virus and recover.

Yes I have heard about the Dutch system. Sounds like a good system. I don’t believe in free health care for the DR. It bankrupted another country similar to DR. I was actually mentioning the visitors or foreigners as we are all visitors no matter residency or not should have insurance but we will see what happens during the rest of this pandemic. Someone mentioned Canadians can’t get coverage for Covid. Can Europeans get coverage for Covid here ? I am not at all an expert on this.

Well I tell you the public hospital in Rio SAN JUAN is a matadero. In 2017, a guy got an accident on a 115 had an accident in front of our house and my cousin and I, we took him in a camioneta to RSJ. What I saw there is a bloody shame. We contacted his family and took him to POP.

I thought the staff was very dedicated, friendly, and helpful. They have a hard job as the waiting room is a sea of human misery. Zero fun, and I can see where you'd come away with that impression.

Just paid for a new policy for a Dominican that didn't provide Covid coverage. It just wasn't available.

The only public healthcare system that I've seen work for poor countries is where the government says we can afford X. Then it's a matter of how to spend X as efficiently as possible to provide the most valuable services. If they aren't happy with the service, then they can either improve the system (fight corruption, fund this instead of that, etc) or provide more funds.

Declaring that you will provide a level of care without regard to cost is the certain road to bankruptcy.

I actually never talked about free health care. I meant I would not mention insurance and health care again but then I did lol . Yes some limited health care for the broader population. The richer countries don’t provide free health care either. There are many things you have to pay for. Free health care is a myth.
