I used to have 3 conventional split a/c's, two of them running from 8pm till about 2 am. Electricity cost between 8 ad 12k. When I moved I bought to inverter split a/c's. They make no noise, no annoying breeze and my bill went down to 2500 pesos (ok including the solar water heater). In these months we are using the airco a little more and we are up to double that (including having a new maid that still needs to be trained in not wasting energy). I changed all halogen lights for LED and bulbs for low consumption bulbs, and ofcourse train everyone in the house to not leave lights, A/C, etc on when leaving a room.

Move to the north coast where the constant breezes, which Sto Domingo doesn't have, will keep you very comfortable. Buy in the hills, save 10 degrees in a few hundred meters of elevation. A/C one or more rooms at your peril as Edenorte are not shy about charging a ton of money. Figure $300 / month or so assuming you live a little outdoors...which is kind of the reason you move here, right?

Honestly, if someone wants to live in a/c all of the time I would live in Miami. Electricity is cheaper and Home Depot is around the corner. If you truly want to live the "Caribbean lifestyle" you'd spend at least 50% of your time outdoors where a/c is not even an option.

Good info. Would you say that the inverter unit is consuming half the $ of a regular unit?

I would estimate a 50% saving yes, they claim 60%. I paid 37500 for each unit (CIAC the lower end brand of Carrier), I had to buy them anyway while moving for a rented place including 2 units to a owned house, I guess I paid 15000 more for each unit than for a conventional unit. Those 30,000 pesos I probably earned them back by now, after 10 months.

They are both 12000 BTU and I bought them Pochy Ieromazzo. One room is about 18m2, the other one maybe 14m2. They recommended me 18000 for the bigger room but I chose 12000 and it does the job excellent, using lowest fan setting, not using turbo.
