I had a little nondescript dog I called Goofy. I left the DR leaving him with others. When I returned 11 months later I didn't expect him to remember me, but he definitely did.

I left for two years to Saudi Arabia leaving my Labrador with a trusted friend who dearly lover her. When I returned the friend want to keep the dog so I said whoever the dog chooses will be the owner.
She stood on the porch and I to the rent a car door with the door open. She called, and I called and the lab jumped in my car, after two years. They remember quite well. The dog also remembered car rides which she wasn't getting with the friend.

Puppy food has a higher protein content....

I have mixed Science Diet with other foods... for variety & economy (hehehe)

I think anything in the low 20's is good enough

I said before & say again - Bravo house brand

Use puppy food for 6 - 8 months or so.....then hunt up a 22-23% replacement

where do you find Bravo House brand ?

I have often wondered if the dog knows that the man controls the car? Or does the dog think that the man in some way knows when the car is going and where. Or doesn't the dog have enuff courisoty to even wonder. Just my thoughts.

I bought some last wee. It's in a clear generic plastic bag.

For our new Great Dane pup I mix it with Science Diet Maxi Puppy food, which is 30% protein. I figure

It's around 24% now.

Giant breeds need to mature more slowly for proper bone growth and should not be fed high-protein food as a pup. As the breeder said, "Genetics determine how big he will get. Diet determines how fast."

Any puppy food I have seen spikes the protein content....

throttle it back w/ regular/adult food in your case will do the trick...
should be simple math on the mix proportions - huh?

Depends on the dog - Those of who have had dogs throughout our lives can confirm they wonder about a lot of things. Yes sure they know you control the car and after they learn - they know where their spot to ride in the car is and that cool air comes out of the AC vents and know a lot more things than most people suspect.

They know the sound of your car's motor, the sound of your walk on the sidewalk, or your voice - but they also can tell your emotions by your expressions. You will catch them stealing glances at you now and then to see if you are watching them.
Smart dogs are incredible - smarter than many people

Totally agree that it depends on the dogs....... i guess that as well as coming in all shapes and forms, they also can be dumb or intelligent-------- just like people.

ATM I have a smart dog, and a not-to-bright dog....... but also an extremely intelligent dog, who is quite a handful for that same reason------- he can open doors, even bolts can you believe.

If you think dogs have no memory, no emotions and an attention span of 10mn, well you were hooked up with some of the dumbest dogs to roam this earth ;) ;)

I had a Jack Russell terrier years ago. VERY intelligent with a large comprehension vocabulary. She loved going for car rides. But on the very few trips to the veterinarian she would always start to whimper and get anxious a few miles from the vet. No discussion in the house prior to leaving - no key words spoken like "VET" "SHOTS" GROOMING" etc . I tried changing the route - still the same. Once I even drove a very circuitous route in order to approach the vet's office from the totally opposite direction, on a road she had never been on before. Same thing. She started whimpering a couple of miles before arrival. Fascinating

Hey all,
I barely check in here or even read but decided to today since I was bored. LOL
My 3 Danes all eat raw. If you watch the Netflix documentary ¨Pet FOOleD¨, you´ll understand why.

I guess you could just chuck them a chicken every day but it´s much more than that. It actually takes time and work because their ancestors didn´t just eat chicken. They ate the whole animal. My pups eat chicken, turkey, duck, goat, rabbit, beef, and pork. They also get organs liver, kidney, pancreas, heart and lung. They get sardines and raw eggs twice per week on top of their raw meal. Kobe and Maia eat about 7-8 pounds of meat per day and Nico eats about 4 right now.

They are Great Danes and only have one medium sized poop per day each as their food is not full of fillers. I cannot say that it is economical as I spend about 30,000rd per month to feed the 3 of them. I´m sure I can get it cheaper but I don't trust the neighborhood butchers so I buy all of their meat at La Sirena.

So I´m not too sure about the dry food but if you have the means and the desire. Raw food is best for dogs.

Don't give the raw eggs - salmonella killed my sister's dog from raw eggs

Dogs that are fed an exclusively raw fed diet have a significantly lower gut PH than dogs that are fed kibble or a mix of kibble and raw. Was your sister´s dog on an exclusively raw diet? Raw fed dog´s gut PH can withstand many bacteria, which is why their ancestors could eat a carcass for 2-3 days and not get sick. Now if the dog is fed kibble, even occasionally, that´s a different story. Kibble increases the gut PH of a dog, making it susceptible to a host of bacteria. Kibble is full of preservatives, and fillers. This is why they poop several times per day and their poop stinks bad (my dogs poop smells but not nearly as bad as normal dog poop)

Stomach pH
The hydrochloric acid in a raw fed dog’s and cat’s stomach has a pH level of 1 to 2. Salmonella cannot survive in conditions other than a pH range of 3.8 to 9.5. The low acidity of a dog’s and cat’s stomach is a protective enzyme against ingested pathogens and is not conducive to the growth of Salmonella.

Digestive Tract
The average amount of time it takes a dog to fully digest and eliminate waste is 6 to 8 hours and a cat’s digestive tract is even shorter than a dog’s digestive system! The incubation period of Salmonella is 8 to 72 hours. Within this time, the dog or cat has completed the digestive process and any remaining Salmonella that may have survived digestion is passed in the feces.

I´m so sorry about your sister´s dog. That´s horrible. But raw eggs are not a significant risk to healthy, exclusively raw fed dogs.
