I am only aware of two children’s books that were written by Dominicans about the country. One is “Si Quisqueya Fuera Un Color” by Sili Recio. It’s a beautiful book that teaches about the diversity of complexions found in the DR. I had posted about it earlier on DR1.

The other is “Island Born by Junot Díaz. It tells the story of a little girl with Dominican roots living in NYC. It discusses the beauty of the country.

There is also “Tía Lola“ by Julia Alvarez, as well as a few others that she wrote for older children.

My sister in law (a primary private school teacher) as well as a Domincana friend living here in Canada recommended Nacho El Hondureño, but it’s more of a primer for reading than a story. And it’s not Dominican.

If anyone knows of other specifically Dominican children’s books, please post here. I think there is a shortage and would like to learn about more. Mods I hope I’m posting the the right place? Thanks in advance.

Nacho is Dominican and the Dominican version, which is the original one, is Nacho Dominicano. The author and creator of Nacho is José Luis Osorio Quijano, a Dominican. His work was later applied in other countries such as Honduras, Colombia, etc.

This is the author and creator of Nacho.

Thank you. Good to know! It seems quite old originally based on the cover page, but has had recent updates. I do have a copy that I found online and it seems to be more of a workbook than a story book. And it’s part of a series or primer type booklets as well.

Another book to add to this list, once again about a child who leaves the Dominican Republic for another country.

Anita and the Dragons by Hanna Carmona and beautifully illustrated by Anna Cunha.

We use Nacho in pre-primary and primary to teach reading. It is very good for this purpose.

Bob it’s a beautiful thing to see a 6 year old read that well, anywhere in the world. Hats off to your school.

They are really pleased with themselves. Such an accomplishment. Some children are really difficult to teach. We have one former student that sent her nine year old back from NYC as he was in grade four in the Bronx and still couldn't read. He spoke both English and Spanish and his math skills were at Grade level but he couldn't read in either language. He is now in regular Grade five and doing well. He just needed the individual attention (one on one) and discipline.
