We're in MANGO season, and I came across this recipe today, thought some of you might enjoy it

Shrimp and Mango Ceviche
Description
Sweet mango, salty shrimp and tart lime balance each other beautifully in this light dish - great for a quick meal or as an elegant appetizer!
Ingredients
1/2 cup chopped and peeled fresh mango
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
1 tablespoon minced red onion
1 tablespoon minced red bell pepper
1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 1/2 teaspoons minced jalapeno
1 teaspoon hot red pepper sauce, such as Cholula
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
8 ounces shrimp, peeled, deveined, and cut into 1/4-inch pieces
Instructions

  1. Combine all of the ingredients except the shrimp in a medium non-reactive bowl and stir well.
  2. Add the shrimp and toss to coat with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate, stirring every 30 minutes, until the shrimp is opaque in color, 4 hours and up to 12 hours.
  3. Arrange the ceviche in a decorative bowl or martini glass and serve chilled.

his recipe is from the cookbook, Mindful Eating from internationally renowned, award-winning Miraval Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona.

Also used extensivly are Taro(eddoes), Yautia(mora), ?ame(yam), Calabaza (squash). I eat them all as well as papa, and pap?. The one most similar to turnips is R?bano. It has a strong flavour and a light orange/yellow colour.

calabaza is not a root vegetable

Those dishes are 100% Dominican via Samana the place where those cononut dishes originated from and are most common.

as Petey said, most caribbean islands use coconut in their meals. there is no evidence that they copied Dominicans

there is no way to swallow limoncillo seed. it's way too big. this is why i hate the fruit: all slime, no substance to it and it can break your teeth. pu**y, i swear.

actually, many caribbean children have died when the seeds got stuck in their throats. in the english speaking caribbean, it is a guinep. in PR, it is a qeunepa.

Can someone tell me if the local beef sold here (not imported) is all grass fed?

i would have guessed so. my father in law has a farm with meat cows and they are all grass fed. so a small butcher would have cows like this. not sure about bigger shops...

who said it was?

here is the original question asked by the poster

Seeing as there is still no"Food" thread on dr1 I shall post here. What is the best root vegetable to substitute for Turnips/Swede/ Swede,Turnip here in a stew or casserole?

what is the BEST ROOT VEGETABLE to substitute for turnips, etc? ROOT VEGETABLE. so, what do you do? you give a list of substitutes, and , in that list, is calabaza. so, am i to take it that you did not understand the question, then?

How petty! Fine me three carrots and a radish.

you may be right. it's not as huge as a mango stone. but i would not be surprised if there were people in this world to choke on that one as well.

when seeing a smallish child choking on something i suggest lifting the kid upside down and giving it a good shake. a cousin saved my brother that way, when the fool had a menta stuck in his throat. not suitable for everyone, of course.

You can get turnips in Playero in Sosua. They are called Nabo. Took me awhile to figure it out, as it looked like a big white carrot, but the taste was right.

Lindsey

A big white carrot sounds like a parsnip. But it could be a daikon radish, an oriental vegetable.
R?bano is the usual word for radish, but in the US radishes are red root veggies that are white on the inside, and there are a variety of other radishes of many different colors and flavors.
The Spanish for turnip is nabo.

In Belize and the Bahamas, these are called kanips. Here in Miami, they are limoncillos.

I don't know of any fruit that has more names. Here are some more:

I prefer eating vegetables, it doesn't matter to me what to eat or why every vegetable has its own taste and qualities so it's really good to eat vegetables instead of eating junk food.

is it the same strain as the one that Dominicans put in everything, including pastry?
