Dominican Recipes ????

Funny thing is that as a kid you couldnt make me eat bacalao, or berenjena or locrio de arenque. BUT NOW, i eat EVERYTHING and anything.

No one was allowed to be picky in my house, mami resolvia todo con un cucharaso, and would say "there is nothing else to eat, you are eatin WHAT I MADE, period". There were no two or three meals in my house for one MEAL TIME. Its whatever was made.

I am trying my best to ensure my kids are not picky eaters, EVERYTHING I MAKE AT HOME (i cook every single night), they eat, i dont indulge them in the chicken nugget and pizza craze, those are treats reserved for outting, otherwise, its HOUSE FOOD, DOMINICAN FOOD. I mean there is nothing more delicious! YUM. So far, they eat everything I make. Who knows if when they are older they becoming picky!

I was a really picky eater as a kid. I remember my mom made eat higado once and I puked on the plate :surprised

I still don't like bacalao, arenque or berenjena (Dominican Style). I do eat grilled eggplant and eggplant parmesan.

I wish my son were like your kids. I cook almost everyday, but it's a nightmare at dinner to get him to eat anything I cook. I started serving him whatever I cook and if he doesn't eat it he has to go to bed hungry. If it were up to him he would eat peanut butter and jelly at every meal.

I also consider fast food a treat to be had once in a blue moon. Besides, he doesn't eat burgers or fries. He just wants the toy.

Mi hijo pasa mucha hambre en Santo Domingo. Last time we went all he ate was bread and fruit everyday.

On another note, Talking about mangu, last weekend my wife and I took our daughter to Mountain Creek water park in NJ and I heard the funniest thing while we re online to get in. Some older Dominican lady was telliin her kids to wait on line so that she can go the car to get some leftover mangu... It was so funny... My wife and I just looked at each other and said: "yeap, she's Dominican. As we waited a little longer she got back with a tremendo plato de mangu. I was so jealous, I wish I was part of their group.

Must do mangu tomorrow... lol

The wierd thing is that she LOVES mangu... That is whenever, we find the time to do it. Que viva el mangu.....

We live about 35min from there and decided to take the kids. Who parks two cars over in that dirt lot? The dominican family with the cooler !! AHAHAHAHAHAH wow


My kids eat whatever I put in front of them, i ask them to try it and if after they try and still dont like it, then i wont force them, but they have to try it once at least.

Rvgal-los hijos mio estaban en las nubes en santo domingo con la avena que se hace aya. I mean they wanted that oatmeal day and night!!! on one particular night, they both had a fit cos they wanted AVENA for dinner, dont you know the cook at the resort we were at were SO SWEET that they actually made some for us and even enough to take back to the room JUST IN CASE?!!

I love DR people and their never ending kindness

Ha, you know Dominicans always go prepared no matter where they go. I remember the last time I went to Great Adventures I saw a Dominican family eating moro and carne guisada and casabe at the picnic tables.

On my last trip to the DR, the lady seated next to me pulled out the mangu con salchichon once the plane took off. Kinda of rude, considering she wasn't about to share with anyone :disappoin:

AHAHHAHAH, girl, my family is of a religious background where they attend certain conventions, and you ALWAYS know who the dominican family is by following your nose. THEY ALWAYS bring out the big guns.....full course meal for lunch, then half way thru the afternoon programs, half the family is sleeping!! LOL

All that reminded me when i used to travel with my dear aunt from Puerto Plata to JFK (my brothers and i were little kids), she prepared a huge bowl of Mangu, cebollas fritas, salami fritos for the flight, plus all kind of snacks. I was sooooooooooooooooo embarrassed when in the middle of the flight my aunt start serving us the Mangu with cebollas y salami, i was always praying God for strong turbulance hehehe, everybody was staring at us.

Yo no me quedo atras, I was beat almost every day and my father would throw the iced cold water on me when I wouldn't want to eat (berenjena, arenque, chicken or beef that wasn't fried) I was really "ma?oso" as my mother called me.

Fortunatelly, I have learned to like certain things, except CHIVO that is...;p;

In my house, my mother could only cook, chicken and bistec, because, we didn't like berenjena, arenque, vacalao or the lechugo gisadas that she likes to cook, it was always a problem. My big brother didn't like to eat spaghettis, my father didn't like to eat carne de cerdo, so my mother couldn't cook chuletas.

So chicken or bistec was cooked everyday or Sanchoco, if my mother got mad NOthing at all, with had to buy our own food.

My mother almost killed us because she prepared (una sopa de vegetales) and we didn't like it, so she made us eat it, but it took like 3 hours, we were crying the whole 3 hours, i hate Sopa de vegetales :tired: but that day we ate and with earned a few bumps in our heat (my mother hit us with a thick stick hehehe.

I love soo many dominican foods, that it is hard for me to choose a favorite.

I guess I'll have to go with Sancocho, because it is such a fool proof dish. My grandma makes a big paila and all of her children and grandchildren flock to her house on sundays. Usually cooks white rice to go with it. There is never any leftovers, and if there is, all of the soup dries up because people take too much, but what we do is that (and this works with habichuela, and sancocho de habichuela and soups as well) we boil some water w. a tiny bit of chicken bouillon (sp?) cube and add it...it works like charm, and fixes the stew. You can only do this when all you have left are the viveres/meat, and the liquid has dried up, if you have a big family, you know that this always happens.

I also love:

Pasteles en hoja, Usually I help my mom make them for thanksgiving/christmas. They freeze well, and everyone goes nuts when we make them. Very long process, but worth it.
chicharron con yuca(encebollada, con aji verde tambien)
chivo encendido
mondongo (my grandma cooks it perfectly in the olla de presion, wash it it with a lot of agrio de naranja).
sancocho de habichuela (with costillita and chuleta ahumada, small slices of plantains)
Habichuelas blancas with hot italian sausage (soo good). Not traditional dominican, but my mom cooks it.
Cocido de pata e' vaca= with chickpeas...very good
Habichuelas rojas, guandules, arbejas guisadas ===only like the way the women in my family prepare it, with agrio de naranja, celery, onion, our homemade sason (which includes garlic and oregano), etc.
Mofongo = only when I am too hungry, because I find that this dish empalaga, due to the high garlic content.

Carne de cerdo frita con yuca o con mangu.

My family is from the south, so they also cook things that are traditional to their campo but not traditional in most of the DR, such as moro de habas, pato guisado, bollo, chenchen, cacha....etc.

I love chench?n and would love some recipes. It's one of the few Dominican recipes missing from the Dominican Cooking collection. I've also eaten its Haitian equivalent, mais moulou.

We do the same thing with the sancocho!! LOL, in my house tho, everyone goes fishing for the YUCA and the RABO (oxtail), i mean its major meltdown mode when there is none left! And when it dries up, sopitas, agua hervida, dos o tres ramitos de cilantro and viola! I love sancocho the next day too, yummy!!

No one eats chivo, so cant make that, paticas de puerco, only in MONDONGO and they have to be cut up very small, my mom wont eat it tho becuase she ate soooo much mondongo as a child, she hates it now. I buy it fresh from this place in queens called EL MUNDO MEAT MARKET, its the best, scrub it with naranja agria y mojo, en la hoya de presion con AJO y CEBOLLAS and it never smells, Mondongo tends to have a strong smell when boiling, i fix that cleaning it that way and making sure you put garlic and onions while boiling.

Pollo guisado is the home favorite for everyone, arroz blanco y habichuela rojas! LA BANDERA.

My sisters and I hated platano hervidos, so whenever my mother made it, we would only eat the "compa?a" (cheese, salami, etc.) We would throw the platanos on top of our roof. (LOL) One day my mother got on the roof to clean it and discovered all the dried up platanos on our roof. After that she watched closely when we had platanos for dinner.

On another note, my mother once made berenjena guisada and my sister acted like she eat it when in reality she had dumped it in the garbage. Of course my mom being a "mom" notice and she made her take it out of the garbage and eat it. And the best part is that my other sister and I started snickering and my mother of course "nos callo' atras con un cucharon".... This is so funny now that I think about it.

Lalla, it's really funny we were there the same weekend. We probably crossed paths a couple of times.. the park is not that big.

Your not kidding, I mean I got on that damn "slide" that you feel your going to fly off of, about ten times in a row, NO lines, and we ran out of rides!! LOL
My kids loved it, us adults looks at each other and said "pero, nosotros podemos hacer esto en el patio, its a dirt yard with a few rides sprinkled around!! What about the candy cane 'forest??' LMFAO, no trees!

Did you notice that INN right on the corner of where you turn onto the road for the park? Well we decided to step in to eat there, and let me tell you, FABOULOUS, been up since 1700's, was an old mill, and inside its GORGEOUS and still has the original mill works inside, you should check it out the next time you are there, you wont be dissapointed.

Back on track,
My grandma used to host xmas dinners at her place and everyone would bring something, there was an aunt that cooked like crap (so undominican of her!) and no one wanted to eat her food, but we had too cos it was bad manners, mami used to make us serve ourself a good portion just so that SHE could keep face!! Meanwhile my grandmother used to make the ENSALADA DE PAPAS with red beats and she used to mash it up sooo much that it was just like a puree of potatoes beets and LOTS of mayo, jesus, every single kid had the runs afterwards!!

I wished i could've done that when i was living with aunt, but she sat in the table with us, made us eat a plate full of food not even a man would've dreamed of eating, i ate it all when i like the food, but my other cousins started doing "buche de comida" and my aunt stuff them with more food, if they said they were full, she touched their stomach if the stomach was not like a balloon, she would said, see see your stomach is empty.

Very funny, my aunt is fat and we were/still very skinny.

I'm so proud of myself. I made a sancocho yesterday. I only used chicken and pork not the seven meats and I had to use butternut squash instead of auyama (sp?). It was not bad for my first try, but definitely needs improvement.

My husband and I ate it and we are still here ;)

My son wouldn't even try it. I'm going to have to send him to the DR for a summer so he'll be forced to more "Dominicano"
