Health officials are urging all Dominicans to get vaccinated against the influenza virus as cases continue to rise. Dr. José Brea del Castillo, president of the Dominican Society of Vaccinology, stressed the importance of vaccination, especially given the potential severity of the flu.
“The flu can be deadly,” warned Dr. Brea del Castillo. “It’s crucial to get vaccinated, especially now that we’re seeing an uptick in cases in the region, including the United States and Canada. With the influx of tourists, the risk of a local outbreak is heightened.”
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), between 10% and 15% of the population is affected by the flu each year. Complications from the flu can include pneumonia, requiring hospitalization or even intensive care.
