Since the beginning of 2009, there has been an increase of approximately .8 pesos in the dollar to peso exchange rate. That's an increase of about 800 pesos per thousand US dollars.

That is fairly decent increase for most US tourists. Anyone bringing in 1000 US dollars now has 800 more pesos to spend than they would have had January 1.

Of course, it's relative to the rate of inflation in the DR, but still, 800 pesos = @ 8 grande frias. Todo es bueno.

There are tourists who change their money at a resort for 32 or at a tourist cambio for 34.
Imagine how many grande frias they are pouring down the drain.:lick:

I plan to exchange my USD to DOP via the ATM machines, especially since Bank of America cards can be used at Scotia Bank without incurring a fee. Also, it would appear Capital One cards can be used without paying a fee, abroad, assuming you opened your account in a state without any Capital One branch locations. PayPal would be my third choice: 1% of transaction plus 1 USD (withdrawing 300 USD would incur a fee of 4 USD).

Please note that this page is intended for people based in the US who have US$ accounts and are traveling to other countries. Including information for every country and currency would make this page too unwieldy, so we have deleted references to cards issued in countries or currencies other than the US and the US$.
