40 years of bar business experience is not enough? I don't know Franks logic, I can only speak for myself but I think (especially based on this thread) that maybe the USD thing is part of a "weeding out" process. Meaning, its a small place and who the hell wants it's seats taken up by cheapo, complainers who will be counting every basis point on the currency exchange. That type of customers takes up a seat for hours sipping on warm beer. There are already a gauntlet of those bars selling drinks at a f#$%-all profit. You can save even more pesos on beer just sitting outside the bodega near Crazy Ranch. I say, smart move!

I think this is a very good point, and probably the reason for USD menu (and a bit higher pricing). That should sure work, well spotted. I hope he has enough friends and customers of the other kind to keep him afloat - only time will tell...

But the "counting of the exchange basis points" you mention is in fact done by the owner of this bar, imagine you go for a burger today and it is $10 * 49.95 = 499.5 pesos on the bill, then go tomorrow and it is, say, $10 * 50.15 = 511.5, although 12 pesos is 12 pesos (thank you very much dear customer), but I hope that is all that keeps his margins and business going (if that is what he thinks it takes to succeed here and what he is worried about !).

No point really discussing this further until next year, if he renews his lease, then he has made a success of it, if not, well another one bite the dust as they say here in soswer....

If I find a thread boring I stop reading it. It seems that other people find this thread interesting enough to keep it top of the most popular list.

Actually that must be one of the funnier comments, this site is filled with pages upon pages of certain keyboard warriors throwing "click jabs" about nada.

It’s just a bad business idea, I am shocked he did that.
Menus should be redone imo.
Automatically I thought they are looking for tourists I’m outta here.

My wife 100% agrees with you. She feels that pricing a menu in the DR in USD is ridiculous.

A USD priced menu to weed out the customers?
Gee, I wish I thought of that. Genius, it is.

They price in $USD at SDQ airport restaurants and Duty Free ............ that's a funny.

Seriously I can't think of any place I have seen pricing in $USD outside the airport. I have been to several places when you get the bill the price is listed in pesos and a few other currencies but the menu or shelf price always pesos.

I ain't moaning and complaining just sayin' what I have seen...........

Only thing I can think of it will be a lot harder for people to compare bang for the buck restaurant vs. restaurant especially if the USD is not your homeland currency.

Wonder how far down the list one would have to go before you hit the currency the menu is priced in, when deciding whether to go to a restaurant or not. Thank god the peso is 50-1 so the people who completed grade 7 math could do the conversion.

Hopefully Big Frank will see and understand that US prices are an issue to some people.

Some people really seem to take offence to US pricing on a menu in the DR. I suspect Canadians will have more of an issue than others, and there are a lot of people from Canada on the north coast. It has been pointed out that only one other north coast location seems to do this.

Time will tell if that really matters. Perhaps he can take a survey of the customers and get feedback on that issue.

Why on earth would Canadians in particular have an issue with this? Seems to me that they are probably the most aware of and used to American dollar conversions

Big Frank is teaching those that can not do math.

I don't really have a problem with the math or conversion but agree that the idea of foreign prices certainly merits some critique here.
In Sosua, unlike in the sophisticated heady lifestyle of the rich and beautiful on Cabarete beach we are essentially very suspicious of this sort of tinkering and immediately think the worst.

Life in this town means being constantly on your guard of being scammed and ripped off that us regular non-temperance types might consider it as yet another way to scheme us out of our precious, meagre stipends as we will usually be unable to even calculate the day of the week and rely on our highly trusted bar staff to not stiff us too much on departure..and that's in pesos..

Hence the caution..

You could see Harleyrock's and Seamonkey's posts, who are Canadians, about why.

All the talk of the menu in dollars and how it’s such a radical idea is nothing more than arm chair chest pounding. In Cabarete, for a menu in Dollars, look no further than Martini's, and it has worked for them for years.
