Nobody is profiting from this, so who cares?
What a bunch of bitter geriatrics living of SS here.

Now, now. Not all of them are living on SS, quite a few of the younger ones are living on government Disability payments. Two people here to be exact. I know most of the people here, so I find it entertaining when you know the people, know their backgrounds, and know how they ended up in the DR.

It's a very colorful crowd of people we have living here in the DR. I'm happy to be a part of it. We're like a box of cereal...you have your fruits and nuts at the bottom, and then you have all the broken pieces that gravitate to the top. Many of us, but not all, are disenfranchised, unemployed, sexual misfits...often disoriented, sometimes misguided, with many prone to accidents, and then misplaced, of all places in the world, on an Island in the Sun.

If you sit down and talk to anyone here long enough, myself included, of why and how they ended up in the DR, you get a good sense of why they are here.

It's not by accident that people gravitate down here and then stay.

All the talk of the menu in dollars and how it’s such a radical idea is nothing more than arm chair chest pounding. In Cabarete, for a menu in Dollars, look no further than Martini's, and it has worked for them for years.

There's other places on the north coast that have prices in dollars. Let's see if anyone can figure out which ones they are. Hint: one of the places is in Sosua and has fantastic, but very expensive food. I've posted lots of photos of their food on my FB page before. A few people will know which place it is.

And of course, in Santo Domingo, there are several places with prices in dollars.

Agree with Frank (shocker) that all the north coast misfits are old, constipated and grumpy.
The receipt shown earlier had all the currencies listed so what's the big deal. I'll stop by there for the heck of it because I go to the Hot Dog stand often. Also if Frankie is back in town.
At least we're not talking boca chica menu rip offs where the USD menu is much higher than the Peso menu. Big Frank at least show you the exchange options. So WTF.

I just have a problem with Philadelphia eagles and their fans

They don't like us, we don't care!

E*A*G*L*E*S
EAGLES!!!
(from Montreal, but an Eagles fan since I moved to Philly 10 years ago)

I've been to Lou's on the beach and this location (had to get buzzed in) and been to O'Shay's ... I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like now, I'll definitely drop in on my next visit to check it out.

the question is this..

how do people end up in a tropical island, with the kind of beauty they could never afford to live in back home, and yet be so mad at the world?

You can take the mad out of their homes, but it's not possible to take the madness out of the man. Just like you can't fix stupid. Now back to the fun discussion of pricing things in USD instead of DOP.

Jamao al Norte
Just went there for lunch. The tv's were all showing sports. Frank was there, chatty as usual. The place was clean and nice. Frank mentioned that business was slow. But most places are slow this time of year and especially on a raining afternoon.

We both had Philly cheese steaks. They were HUGE and delicious. No other restaurant serves cheese steaks as authentic as these. I also ordered their homecut fries. The portion was quite small for $3.00, but as it turned out, the sandwich was so huge that I could eat only half and could not finish the fries. No malt vinegar was on hand.

The bill for both cheese steaks, one beer, fries, and two waters was 1,300 pesos. Maybe just a tad more than we would have paid in Bologna, Margot's, or other better restaurants in the Batey.

Truly, I cannot find anything to be critical about. We have only a few "go-to" restaurants in Sosua for lunches or casual dinners. Now, we will have one more.

Let's be honest,

Menus in dollars outside a dollar area are a universal indicator of a tourist trap. From Paris to Phuket or from Athens to Zaragoza they are designed for the average American tourist who has no clue that other forms of money or culture exist outside of his parochial sphere and cannot be bothered with the equivalent values in the short time he is there.

As long as the food and ambiance are welcoming then why not?

It's just that we residents are not used to it in Sosua.

That is Frank's demographic. It worked in Cab so why change a winning formula?
Go with what you know..

I for one, can't wait to get back down to our Winter Haven, meet this Frank guy you all keep talking about and look forward to enjoying a "Philly Steak"? and those fresh cut fries. I'll have to apologise to him for turning down his invitation to sit down and chat one Sunday evening as a friend and I were traipsing through O'Shea's on our way to open mike night. Even invited him and his friend over to join us. What can I say, I am TotaleeBlonde.

Belated Happy Birthday Frankie. No way you are 60, unless that is in USD, in Pesos you are about 35.

Wrecksum has it right --

if travelers (tourists) are you the target customers..... cater to them

Or- offer menus in the currency of choice --by asking
would you prefer an English menu in US$ or a Spanish menu in pesos ?

The menu should be in RD Pesos, then offer a favorable conversion, as he needs USD to purchase goods.

If Playero buys RDP at a favorable rate, why can't Finn McMick?

He is doing this as a hobby anyway.

I'm reluctant to comment here for fear of being called a grumpy old man and told to get a life, but just to set the record straight, at Jose O'Shay's in Cabarete, the menus were in pesos.

Ha! Guy's is there anything around that is more important then how much a Sports bar's cost's? This is getting old. If you don't like it don't go. Come on guys. You can go to Jolly Rodgers, Bailey's etc. I've been here for while. There are more important things.
