At least 38 people have been detained in the investigation by DICRIM of the National Police in connection with the stabbing of a couple of foreign spouses in the town of Cabrera.

The victims were identified as Robert Thomas Tokarz 70 years old, of American nationality and Audrey FrancesJamine Tron, 57, a Dutch national, who were found dead yesterday inside their residence, located in the residential Los Farallones of said municipality.

The deceased were found today in a state of decomposition, which indicates that the murder took place several days ago.

The bodies were taken to the municipal cemetery of Cabrera, and they will be taken care of by the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) for corresponding purposes.

It's just down the road from me.......... a type of gated community.

I just heard about it earlier today so have little to report.

Like everywhere else, we have crime.... murders, not so much.
Cabrera is small and the local police are good at sniffing out the culprits.

We'll wait/see... robbery, grudge, who knows?

Thread from DR1 July 2013.

Murder in cabrera
A foreigner named Gina, from Holland, has been found dead in her house this morning. She has lived here for many years and was liked by all. Rumors are that she was stabbed to death. The police are on the scene. Gina worked in a salon in Cabrera. She did not have a lot of money nor did she hang out with tigeres. Just so very sad. The community is in shock

Very sad.

There was something fishy about that Dutch deal.

They say -
She went home and changed - expecting a visitor.
They say -
she had the salon payroll in her apartment

They say a lot of things..... never solved to my knowledge.

As to her friends - I can't comment.
I didn't know her

The North East Coast seems to have more than its fair share of grizzly crimes involving non Dominicans . I can hardly recall reading about one in the east . I wonder what is the reason?

The east is run by corporate interests that will not tolerate this. Everything is privately owned on the East coast, even the Airport. The north is the dominican mentality of screw everyone. Bob (the victim in this case) would say how sleazy the North Coast was and how things were much different on the East side. He did talk about moving there, too bad he did not.

Do you really think the police are good detectives, WW? It took them, something like, 2 years to get Gina's murderers. I have little faith, personally. And that was considered to be an OK area, too. Very sad news, and bad news.

If a Dominican gets arrested for a crime like this in Cabrera, the great local police will usually let him go if his Madre can come up with 10,000 pesos. With the spotlight on this one, maybe it will take 20,000 pesos. If a foreigner gets in a car accident that is not their fault they will be put in jail, have their passport taken away and extorted for as much as possible - many $1000s of US Dollars, and that's if they are completely innocent.
Please name me another country that treats its foreign visitors this way - especially one that relies on tourism. Basically it is a free-for-all to go after foreigners, as long as the police get their cut. All the other islands are the opposite, where the locals know not to mess with foreigners as the police won't take kindly to it.
People say that foreigners are naive when they get in trouble in the DR, but it is really the lack of any sense that the DR has in its approach that no one really knows or could imagine how things are stacked against the foreigner specifically in the DR.

Actually I am not to sure about that. I can't say for sure, but I think/hope this case is different. These were not people doing the wrong thing, this is not just the average gringo getting killed under questionable circumstances or someone losing some money in a robbery. These people did a lot of good and knew a lot of people throughout the community. Also there are families back in the US that do have some influence, so maybe in this case there will be some real action. If that is correct (and I'm not sure, but hoping) the questions then becomes, will this just be a one off or will this lead to a clean up of the North coast for a while (or at least Cabrera area).
I did have conversations with some influential cabrerenos and at least the jist of it was that this was a last straw and something needs to be done now about the crime. It has been said before, but with the circumstances of this case, either they will do it now or it will never be done.
Hopefully something positive can come out of this unbelievably tragic situation.
Also, hopefully they will get the right persons and all involved (guard at the gate and others who may have been involved??) and not just a scapegoat to close the case quickly. Also anyone who aids the people in hiding should be held accountable - that definitely was not the case in the dutch murder case.

you are very right about all the other islanders knowing not to mess with tourists, because the cops will not take kindly to it. i have a very good friend who is a NYNJ `Port Authority cop. he is as white as the driven snow, but he goes to places in Kingston, Jamaica, that i would not even dream of going. he is drinking in bars i never heard of , at all odd hours, and nobody bothers him. the local guys know that if anything happens to him, the cops are going to eradicate some guys with extreme prejudice.

Dulce yes , it is not legal but the police in this country drag in sisters and brothers and mothers and fathers of people they are searching for and hold them in dreadful conditions and with constant questioning in a method of getting to the alleged criminal .It happens time and time again .
DRDone, yes I think you are partially right . Foreigners are thought as being able to pay their way out of trouble and the negotiated price is high ..It is very difficult for foreigners to win cases against Dominican authorities or citizens so always best to buy your way out.. I know it is not fair but there is no option but to go with the flow ..I have stated before that I have a contingency fund at hand always .
I do feel sorry for the friends and family of this couple ..it is a horrid thing to happen .

Does the two nationalities of the victims mean that the FBI and KLPD will cooperate on the case?

Do you actually have any evidence backing up the extremely serious accusations you are making?
Most Dominicans actually complain that especially since a new procedure criminal code was forced on the Dominican people by 'well-meaning' foreigners authorities are severely limited, which results in criminals getting away. And it is foreigners who often get away with MURDER (literally) not only because of money, but because of their HYPOCRITICAL governments take advantage of their strength to help their citizens to get away with criminal conduct. Do you need examples?

Of course that isn't to say that there aren't rotten cops in the DR...there are also in most places on earth, including wherever you came from. But you make it sound as if the kind of abuse you alledge is the rule and not the exception.

In fact, if you actually believe that what you say is true, it is absolutely irrational for you not to have gone elsewhere already. I would never stay in a place where the stuff you describe is common place...no reasonable person should.
