Does anyone know of a free app to call Canada from the DR? Google Voice has issues. I can use WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and dozens of others to call friends and family.

What I need is one to call businesses in Canada that don’t use those types of apps for receiving phone calls.

I used one called TextNow all year last year and had no trouble, but it doesn’t work anymore.

I’ve found a few but they’re all $4.99/month etc. I’ll pay it if I have to but Text Now was free so I wanted to check if there are any others before signing up for a paid app.

Thanks in advance.

If you have an IPhone
Go to Settings
Cellular
Turn on Wi-Fi Calling

Connect to a Wi-Fi and you will be able to make and receive calls just like you do on cellular
If you want to make sure those calls stay in Wi-Fi mode just turn on Airplane Mode first

Many currrent Android phones also have this feature.

Thanks for the suggestion. My Canadian carrier is blocking Wifi calling.

When I try to turn it on, I get an error message that tells me to contact them for support. Their support hasn’t been able to figure it out yet.

You can use "fongo" you get a Canadian phone number(city of your choice) and can call to Canada free. I use the free basic service but you can also pay for additional service. I use to use google talk and change to fongo when google talk cancel their free service.

Draw back not free calling USA numbers like google talk.

My wife uses Skype for those types of calls. From DR to Canada it's about a penny a minute and to the UK was about 1.5 cents per minute.
Really cheap and usually good quality reception.
It's not a monthly fee. Set up an account and deposit 5 dollars. Lasts a really long time.

Text Now is free. It gave me a Canadian number but now won't let me back in and I can't set it up from here. Maybe with a VPN. I will definitely try Fongo, thank you.

If you have issues with high roaming fees or with your carrier not working in certain countries, you can also set up call forwarding with Skype, and make it look like the calls are coming from your normal number so your contacts will be none the wiser.

Fongo seems to be working. Any issues and I’ll try Skype.

My faith in DR1 is restored.

Thanks everyone.

I downloaded fongo and it works for calls to Canadian numbers. If you want to send or receive text messages you have to pay. So if you want to use it for WhatsApp you won't be able to get the verification code.

Apparently, Altice doesn't have wifi calling. It doesn't appear as an option on my iPhone(?).

Surprising. It’s usually an option on your phone, under Settings/Cellular.

I've never heard of it before until now - never noticed it before either. It's definitely not there now. I'm current on updates. maybe it's because I don't have a "plan"?

Not sure, but I’d think the companies would encourage it because you use less cellular data. I’ve been using it for years because we live in a wooded lake area where we’re lucky to get one bar.

My Canadian carrier seems to have Wifi calling blocked.

But now with Fongo I can call them and ask why that is.

Maybe that's why not many people use Altice.............
I'm sure there are those for whom this is a very convenient feature. For me, almost all of my contacts, as well as businesses, farmacias, doctors, contractors, and restaurants all have a WhatsApp number. There are some times when it would come in handy.
