I have driven in Boston, SD, and Santiago.

Although Boston has its challenges, including an inscrutable system of one-way streets and illogical driving routes, I found that at least the streets are in very good condition and well marked, the laws are consistent and equally enforced, and, aside from rush-hour, traffic moves fairly smoothly.

Those conditions do not exist in SD or Santiago, although the traffic in Santiago is more manageable than in SD, in my opinion.

Like residents of any city in the world, the locals know how to get around using back streets and short-cuts. Even though I've been going to SD for 34 yrs, when I drive I tend to stick to the main streets [read: traffic jams] - but when we're with my in-laws they snake in and out of streets that they know like the back of their hands. By the time we get where we're going I'm completely turned around - and I have an excellent sense of direction!

I am getting better at it though, sometimes I point out short cuts to my husband now! :cheeky:
