Nothing to say - I just wanted to bump the thread just in case some people missed it! LOL

Come on, you generous DR1'rs, I am sure there is still need for donations.

Any updates Chris on how it is all going?

No problem, the most important thing is to keep this thread alive so that people don't miss it!

I don't necessarily need to know any updates - I know our donations are in good hands!

Thank you again for bringing this to everyones attention or for all the hard work you are all doing to make sure the job gets done.

The first donated monies were sent to Santiago this morning and it is now over to Hillbilly and Chip to get it into the right hands.

Curently there are still some donated monies that need to clear. Only when everything is clear through the bank, can I give you an accurate amount. At this stage, it looks like we are around $1,500 on my side, and then some more cash donations in Santiago with Hillbilly.

It is a little difficult to keep track of it quickly, as donations come in and sometimes they bounce and sometimes they get reversed. We are also still working on a few sticky transactions that simply do not want to process. As soon as this clears, I will be able to give you accurate figures.

Let's hope the first donated monies fill the right bellies and bring some happiness in a situation that is dire. Thank-you!

I went down to the organization that is going to receive the donation, "Caritas" of the Archbishop of Stgo., and saw a list of the relief centers they are working with. I decided to stop by one relief centers at a church in Bella Vista and talked with a missiionary from Germany. They said any help will be greatly appreciated and said many of the the people there (over 100 families, mostly Haitians) don't even have basics, such as towels and toothbrushes. They also said that the goverment has not given them anything. They are eagerly awaiting any donations.

Not that it makes difference, but are the majority of the people affected by the flood in Santiago Haitians. Perhaps thats why the government is doing less.

Thanks DR1 management for your kind donation.

Let's continue giving if we can folks! We've now worked through most of our teething pains:
- we can receive money,
- we can get it to the DR quickly (with the kind help of yet another DR1 poster and Santiago businessman!)
- and Chip and Hillbilly is doing the right thing and getting the funds directly to the right places - thanks for the legwork Chip!

Yes it takes time and effort, but at least let us do the little that we can.

Reading the thread in the weather forum and the background work that a few posters are doing there, again tells me that governments are worthless these days. The DR Government should be all over this thing fixing what they did wrong, but I guess it again is 'someone else's fault'.

Bob, no, I don't think the majority of the affected people in Santiago is Haitian. I think the majority in Santiago are Dominican. Up the valley and through the farmland, yes, there would be a large number of Haitians working on the farms. As far as I know, Caritas work right through Santiago and it would be simply the luck of the draw that Chip visited a relief station that are focussed on Haitians.

Hello Chris, I only now had a chance to reply to your e-mail. I did the Paypal thing, and hope the monies get to you ASAP. Sorry - I was traveling until now.

This is a worthy cause.

Thank you dr1 and all the Helpers,

Thank-you all again.

The easiest way is to pm me your email address and the amount that you would like to donate, and I'll generate a request for payment directly from paypal. You will find this in your email. It works smoothly and easily. You can donate with your credit card or with your paypal account. And the only one who has your email address is me. And I promise I don't have any spam to send you ;)

Inside the DR, if you're going by Santiago, you can drop cash money off with Chip or the Hillbilly (of course write them first to find a suitable time), or you can send money with Caribetours. Caribetours is almost easier than paypal.

Caribetours is almost easier than paypal.

Almost? If you have a credit card issued on a UK bank, with a billing address in US (for bank statements etc) & meanwhile you live in DR AND you answer all their sign-in questions honestly, you are posing too big a hurdle for Paypal to jump so Caribetours is definitely easier. Paypal appear to have restricted vision for those who do not meet the 'one size fits all'.

Funny thing is after messing Chris around for 5 days trying to get my card verified on a Paypal account with no responses from Paypal when I emailed them about the issue, I shut both the Paypal accounts I'd opened & went the Caribe tours route. Now of course I'm getting bombarded with emails from Paypal. So I have a copy/paste of 'I refer the honorable company to the answer I gave in the penultimate email' which I send each time. If they keep it up I might look into harassment litigation. :) Or send to spoof@paypal.com

Thanks Lambada.

It looks like today we're on $1,500 with a few more transactions having a hard time to process.

We'll hear from the Chip very soon as to the activities in Santiago.

Chip is delivering some of the funds today. He will take pictures. I still have to pick up some funds. Tomorrow we'll get more down there.

I made the donation today, see attached receipts for DR1's donation of US1100 and mine and HB's. Also see photos, one of the lady at Caritas, one of the River Yaque at the curve right before the bridge taken from the Caritas's office, and one of a mission in Bella Vista. BTW, the great big dirt area just adjacent and to the right of the river as shown in the photo used to have many homes in this area before they were washed away by the wave of water and cleaned up by the City's demoing crews.

Caritas informed me that the money would go to take care of the immediate needs of those displaced by the homes and also towards a building fund to help many have their homes built again. She profusely thanked us and said they really appreciate it. Currently, the relief centers are helping more than 2000 people, many of them families, staying in various temporary boarding places. There are more as well, but many of those have family with which they are staying.

Thank you very mucho

Thanks from me to Chris, Chip, Hillbilly and all others playing a part in coordinating the collection, distribution and accountability for the funds.

This has shown that DR1 members are not only generous but are able to accept a 'change of plans' in charitable endeavors. From Chris' original plan to distribute food, to a few constructive criticisms, to the final contribution to the archdiocese... an incredibly smooth operation.

I don't think there would have been a better way for most of us to insure that our contributions would reach the intended recipients.

Thanks again.

Thanks CFA .. many things have happened, like, I had to swallow my pride and figure out that the Church is doing a good job (being the non-churchy person that I am ;) ) Actually, they're doing the best 'bang for the buck' currently in Santiago and it is wise to work with Caritas.
Chip had to just figure it out as he went .. all honor to him.
The Hillbilly is there for constructive action, knowing the place like the back of his hand.
And our secret 'smoother of the funds', simply receives and hands over.
So, two of us are using our business infrastructure to smooth the collection and distribution of donations.
These are all 'good people', and that makes the difference.

And you know what, no-one involved asked me any questions. They just said OK, let's go .. and the rest is simply figuring out how to do it! So, from a very shaky and very uncertain position at the start, at least for me, we are doing it. The right people are benefiting.

And I am humbled. Glad that I did it! Glad that it is working! And ever more thankful for what I have in life. You can be certain that each and every donation that I dealt with, is 'salted'. Salted with my tears!

Hey Chris,
As a means of bumping the thread up & hopefully attracting a few more generous souls (well those who might feel greedy after gorging themselves over the last few days anyway!!) is there any update you can let us have of donations received by yourself & HB, what has been collected & what has been delivered by Chip?

No need for the receipt photos - I think we all trust the parties involved to give honest appraisals, but some update might spawn the thoughts of a few others to contribute a few U$D &/or pesos!!

I seem to recall your original target was US $4,000 - are we anywhere near that figure yet? With the lack of support being given by this Government to the homeless & needy we can be sure that EVERY donation will be gratefully received and EVERY pesos/U$D will be used to the benefit of the destitute & poor people of Santiago.

Thanks for all your efforts & congratulations on your successes so far! ~ Grahame.
