It might seem like a no brainer for the veterans here, but we still haven't solved this. We want to hire a full-time cleaning lady, but how can we find and hire a cleaning lady that we can trust? We live in SD.

Why would any member of this forum be any more qualified to answer your question than you doing your own due deligence?

A church might be a good place to start. Often the Pastor knows his congregation and can connect you with some good candidates.

After you find a 'trustworthy' one, don't forget to prepair yourself for some additional fun like:
- she steals something from you and disappears
- she brings her friends/sons/relatives, opens the door for them while you're sleeping and they kill you and steal anything from you
- she goes to fiscalia (they love to do that in Santo Domingo) and submits a querella against you, accusing you that you abused her, raped her, made her pregnant, demanding millions of pesos from you or she puts you in jail
- you will never get rid of her because she goes to fiscalia and demand a right to live in your place
- you will be never able to sell your place because there will be an ongoing dispute between you and her about her right to continue to live there
- etc., etc., (use your imagination)

Why is that 5% of foreigners always have 95% of the problems, and the rest of us live here for years without issues. Makes me wonder who they associate with?

I would say only reliable way is word-of-mouth. Our ex-neighbor (we're abroad) has a maid that takes care of their house even when they were away. 100 % reliable. We've had a number of workers doing chores in our home, All via word-of-mouth, never issues...

Actually, let me add something: You can also tell something about a person when you speak with them...

I always wonder the same... Sometimes even that there must be more than one Dominican Republic, as we can't possible be speaking of the same country...

Are you really sure you want to live here?

Mr. Burke- there is something telling about you in this post. Clearly, you have social issues. The best partof your "information was" they love to do that in Santo Domingo" lol. I can just see it now...a que of housekeepers lined up at the fiscalia, all comparing notes and sorting out the monetary value of their claims should be. And YOU have knowledge and substantiation of this...right?

Finding a good one isn't hard, finding one that is cheap and flexible is hard. We put up with a sub-par maid for my mother-in-law for years because she was able to put up with her nasty moods and biting tongue; she also and a big heart and would come at strange hours if needed, babysit at the medical clinic. She was never a live-in. I think church connections might be good.

Enough of the negativity you seem to bring to various threads. Maybe the DR is not for you.

Funny, you do not need a maid but yet have several opinions about hiring one.
I don't need a maid, but since everybody around has one, I know what happens every now and then. Actually, last time when the maid opened the door to someone who killed the woman who lived in the apartment, happened a few years ago and it was a few blocks from my place, in a modern tower with very expensive apartments, with a lot of security, cameras, etc.

No, I do not think so. Do you have any proof of some of the things you posted (other than items disappearing because that happens to almost everyone). Can you back any of that up?

Well, not all of the cases make it to the newspapers, but some do.

Regarding querellas to fiscalias, you can talk to any fiscal about his daily cases :)
