Planner - you finally met Ron!!!! Can you believe you live that far away from him and met him......I only live 9 minutes away from him here at home and have yet to.

The fake and bake - just got back.....figure I may as well look good when I get there and hopefully not burn as bad as I could without colour.

Anyone have any new pics from the past week or 2?

Ron - I hope you have a wonderful 2 last days of paradise!!! Its almost zero here tonight and quite nice (not like when you left and it was -25!!!) The kids came in about an hour ago off the outdoor rink!

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hello Everyone, I have a couple of questions about this resort and the surrounding area, please can anyone who has been there answer them.

Ok, I have trouble eatting in public so I wouldn't be able to eat at any restaurants or the included buffets', so was wondering whether there are any supermarkets or large food stores that sell stuff like bread, cheese, ham, butter etc within walking distance of the hotel resort?

Also because I would need to take any food back to the hotel, do they have a fridge in the standard rooms?

Please only answer if you have been there and know, because if they don't have these (food shops and fridge) then I won't be able to go.

Thanks
Ant

Hi,

The rooms do have a fridge. We also picked up food at night and just brought it back to our room to watch ER at 11 pm. Just pile up your plate and take it to go. We never had a problem. There is a small store on site that sells snack items but not much. There might be a snack type type store at Playa Dorada Plaza but I didn't see a full grocery store in the immediate vicinity.

C4nt - yes their are fridges in the room. They are small though.

You can go to the buffet and get your plate to go back to your room. That is a very good option for you.

The plaza really does not have a grocery store as such. The stores do sell some items but mostly snack foods. The grocery store is about 10 minutes away in Puerto Plata and is not too expensive to get to by taxi. They have everything you will most likely need.

SUn - the sun is hottest here between about 12:30 and 2:30. Sun screen of 30 SPF will give you as much protection as possible. Confirm it is waterproof and not water resistant or it washes off in the pool or ocean. When I visited as a tourist I always found a few sessions in the fake and bake helped. I love the outdoors and had a hard time limiting my exposure time the first few days. Prebaking helps a bit. As for cancer risk - my opinion is that almost anything in moderation is likely safe. A few sessions in a tanning bed is different then going 2 times a week all year........... it is most likely safe.

tans

I have never been a fan of the fake and bake, mainly b.c of cancer, do you really think it helps that much? I am pure cake so I do not have the ability to tan like any European would or someone with that heritage...any pure cakes that fake and bake? your thoughts?
I usually burn and peel, the first year we went down I was afraid to leave the shade lol. but last year I did the fake and bake, the base tan was an advantage and I was able to sit in the sun like the rest of our group without burning. I used a 30 sunblock though. still the tanning beds and a base tan do make a difference.

Thanks for the reply, sounds good to me, I can buy snack items when I arrive and go to the grocery store for more food the next day. As long as I can fit important things like butter and cheese in the fridge it will be ok, I can also get rid of the cold beer and use that space too :cheeky:

Another quick question is the main language spanish or french?

Thanks again for the reply and thanks to everyone else who PM'ed me or replied on here!

Scared about the 9 hour flight now!:ermm:

This is a Spanish speaking country but most staff at the resort speak English. And you are very welcome.

Planner - did you get any pics of your visit with Ron and the rest of them last night?

Also - is there a place to buy rye (whiskey) there? Do you know if its included in our all inclusive at the hotel bars? It says "all domestic drinks" - is it considered domestic or is only rum?

No photos honey, people have to choose to put pictures of themselves up. I wont' do it.

My photos is not posted either. But I might be convinced to send it privately...;)

Domestic drinks refers to house brand. Yes there is rye, vodka, gin etc etc

Imported - I think there is some available but you pay for it.

Any idea what the rye brand is that is considered house brand? (don't want to have to pay for the rye for the week - that would break my spending budget!!!)

When we were at Breezes last year they had all sorts of "drinks du jour", many of them were made with rye. I think when they say no premium brands it means you are not going to find any Crown Royal etc, just what they have local. Sorry not a rye drinker, so I don't remember what it was called. But dam the run is verrry goood !!!!!
They sell booze in the grocery stores just like in the States.

Sometimes a tip can get you the brand you want..if they have it..

I did notice a few times..that if you are really drunk...some bartenders would put 151 rum in your drink..and the drunk person goes sleepy sleepy now..lol...

As we are on about drinks - can anyone who is there or has been or maybe planner you will know, tell me what the wine is like. I have heard that wine is really the DR thing and so isn't very nice but I would be interested to know if its normally dry/sweet etc. If its that bad I can always fit a few good ones in my suitcase.

Darwenlass - no you didn't miss the family rooms in the video they have changed it recently. I wonder if any of the people who they filmed were really holidaying there and if they ever come on this forum - if you are out there let us know!!!!
