Wine - The wine here is generally not great. Probably a mid level sweetness and not an expensive brand. I've not found one resort here with good wine. And if you are bringing your own - are you sharing???
[/QUOTE]

Of course - that will be wine, chocolate plus newspaper for Planner added to my list!!

As far as I am aware there is no undertow here at Playa Dorada beach. However - there is a flag system and if they show the red flag you cannot go in the water. That might just be when the waves are too big but I am not positive.

Me - I am originally from Canada. Now I say I am half Canadian and half Dominican!

October weather - very hot and humid. This year October was absolutely stunning!!!! Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov 30. We have not had a hurricane in Puerto Plata / Playa Dorada for over 80 years. We did have a tropical storm 2 years ago in September that did a bit of damange.

Wine - thanks for the offer but really not necessary shelobern - I was more hoping for a glass from your bottle when we meet up!!! ;)

Planner et al:

Someone asked about ocean water temperatures a few days ago. The latest reports from buoys and ships just north of the coast show 25 to 27 C (77-81 F) - ie. nice and refreshingly warm.

Enjoy!

That was me, and thanks for that. Sounds good to me, just 7 more days !!!

Got home Monday

Hi although i've been reading this forum since page 3 i've never actually posted myself until today. My sister and i got back from HVGB on Monday and promised ourselves we would post a review so here goes:

Royal Suite - On arrival in the clubhouse we were given a drink whilst we checked in, we were fortunate enough to get our rooms straight away but really wouldn't have minded waiting as we were being looked after so well. We stayed in a standard suite which we were happy with, the finish could've been better but bearing in mind the country we were in we were happy overall, we had everything we needed, bath, shower, toilet (working - as in Greece it's best to put the paper in the bin but they're emptied daily), sat TV, minibar (stocked with beer, water, pepsi, 7up and refilled every day). Our room was kept clean and the bed turned down each evening. Other people we met had bigger rooms than us so it's probably luck of the draw which you get. To be honest size doesn't matter much to us!

Restaurants - As Royal suite guests we were allowed to book all of our a la carte meals at once, the first we went to was the Italian, i have to admit we were not impressed with this restaurant. We felt like cattle from the beginning to end. Everyone eating in this restaurant does so at the same time so if you only want a main you have to wait until everyone has finished their starters. All menus are given out at the same time, drinks are offered at the same time etc, you get the picture. The caribbean opened whilst we were there and we really liked it, the setting is lovely, and the food good too. If you can't decide what you want to eat they are happy for you to try them all. Unfortunately we didn't make it to the Mexican or Asian so can not comment on them. The buffet was okay, i sometimes had trouble finding something to eat but that is no different from buffets in all other hotels i've stayed at. We always ate breakfast at the Clubhouse which we preferred as it was quieter, more friendly and your hot food cooked to order.

Bars - Our favourite bars were the Adult pool bar where Miguel has to be the happiest guy i've ever met, we know all the words to his favourite songs!! The downside to this is that it closes at 7pm, it would be a fantastic place if open throughout the evening for Royal suite guests. Our other favourite was Aquanox which is the adult bar, they have loads of TV's and were showing baseball and the tennis whilst we were there. Luis really looked after us there, we rarely had to ask for more drinks they were put in front of you before you realised you needed it, quite dangerous for the head the next day! Make sure you try Mangu just once, it's a great club we went there on the Friday and Saturday, it was much better on the Friday, the atmosphere on Saturday was less party-like but on the Friday was really good fun.

Entertainment - This is geared towards kids, we rarely stayed longer than five minutes watching the shows as they were so poor. Think Karaoke in your local bar and you'll get the picture. I'm sure the entertainers are trying their best but you really can't call them professionals and the content of the shows can get very samey after a while. We only stayed a week and agreed that had we been there for 2 weeks the evenings would've been very boring.

When we first arrived there we were really worried because of all of the negative reviews we'd read, this may have lowered our expectations but we were pleasantly surprised. We found the Dominican people to be really lovely and so friendly, it was them who helped to make our holiday. We met some great people around the adult pool and i would strongly suggest that if you aren't going with kids to upgrade to the Royal suites where you are much more likely to meet similar minded people. We were given questionnaires everywhere we went so the management are clearly trying to improve things.

All in all this place is what you choose to make of it. We had a good time but it was largely down to the people we met both other holidaymakers and the hotel workers who really work hard to make sure you have a good time. We heard a lot of negative comments from others about the First Choice reps but can't really comment as we didn't have anything to do with them.

That's me done, sorry i've gone on for so long!

You said it your holiday is what you make of it, there were many things we could have made an issue of & allowed to bother us, but it really wasn't worth it, at least they are trying to resolve the problems. We never made it to the Mexican either but the Oriental was good.

Goonergirl, thank you for the post! It was good to hear about the adult only section of the resort. I have a question, although the bar closes at the pool at 7pm can you still swim?? From what I have been reading the main area you cannot swim after 6...I love swiming in the moon light so I hope we still can! Did you tip while you were there and if you don't mind me asking how much...I don't want to under tip.

Hey Ron!! are you home yet??? I am looking forward to your post.

Cheers

IF you are asking where is good to go out to at night : Mangu on the resort. It is well liked by your age group and there will be lots of other from the other resorts too.

IF you are asking about what resort to go to? That is another question. Send me an email and I will answer you privately.

Happy Holidays - did not get your PM please resend or email me.

Go leafs go - I need some additional info and will have no problems sending you that letter! I need full name, flight details and your contact info at home.

Wine - The wine here is generally not great. Probably a mid level sweetness and not an expensive brand. I've not found one resort here with good wine. And if you are bringing your own - are you sharing???

Brijohn - Email for the hotel fcabrera@do.occidentalhotels.com is Freddy Cabrera, the manager. OR try info@do.occidentalhotels.com

151 is now illegal to take out of the country. They stop you at the airport and ask if you have it. They will possibly go thru your luggage to find it..... THey then take it away from you.... And what fun is falling asleep from 151?
Thanks planner for info, may be I will try and swap the 151 bottle over with some thing else, you get my drift ;) ;)

Facility for boiling water

My wife asked if I could post a question regarding boiling water. We have a five month old and we need to figure out how to boil water to sterilize the bottles, nipples, etc...

Is it possible to get an electric tea kettle to use?

Otherwise, we might have to bring something from home.

While I'm posting, what about the ice cubes at the resort. Do we have to be worried about them in our drinks?

thanks for all the great reviews. Selmabg we are leaving next Thurs fr Vancouvder and are definitely getting excited now. Tickets on their way from our TA and bags are packed!!!

Just a quick question......does the resort stock diet pop of any kind? I prefer that. Also, do they have ice tea and is it the "american" kind (no sugar) or the "Canadian" kind with sugar?

We have just returned from a fantastic holiday at hvgb. Regarding babies we also took a small baby and there is a coffee maker in the room were you can boil water. The maid leaves bottled water every day and if you order a baby pack it contains a steraliser. Hope you have as good a holiday as we had.

Woody on ca - I believe I read you can order the baby pack prior to your arrival - something like $105.00 Cdn.

Personally I would order it before leaving so you can be sure to get everything - it included a play pen, high chair, steralizer and other things. If I recall the info is on the website.

Have a great trip!

Leafs Fanatic - Ron should be arriving in Toronto late this afternoon - then heading back here to Ottawa.

I would think by tomorrow we will hear from him.....hopefully....unless the hangover is too bad :)

Here is what I received from our travel agent - it wasn't on the website but in a Signature Vacations newsletter for this month....."Signature offers a Baby Pack which I would highly recommend pre-booking in Canada. This is a fantastic and convenient option for those with infants as all of your baby gear will be awaiting you when you arrive. The pack costs $110 CAD for 1 week and $147 CAD for 2 weeks. The pack includes: highchair, stroller, bathtub, change mat, crib/playpen, steam sterilizer, bottle and food warmer, UV sun tent and the use of a hand held food blender. There are only a limited number of baby packs so book early!"

I hope this helps.

I'm not as organized as you are! My bags are still empty but they are ready to be filled. I'm sure we'll all meet up at the pool. I'll be recognizable with red, white and blue ribbons tied on my beach bag!!
