Review 14th - 21st May
Hi All
I returned from the Holiday Village on 21st May, i spent 7 days there for my honeymoon.
Having read all the previous reviews and threads i was quite aprehensive and did consider changing my holiday. Eventually we decided not to change and hoped for the best.
As we booked into to a Royal suite room we were quickly taken to the VIP clubhouse where check-in was quick and easy. Our room was upgraded from a junior royal suite to the royal suite, complete with jacuzzi, sitting room etc. We were also given complimentary breakfast in bed.
My main concern was the food - the buffet restaurant varied, there was fresh fish, or joint of meat available every night. However i only ate a full meal once the whole time i was there. Often the meat was undercooked and ozzing blood from the middle (a matter of taste i think). We only tried the caribbean and chinese a la carte as my husband is quite a fussy eater. The caribbean was a disappointment for me - the menu didn't really convey caribbean food and i left still hungry. The chinese was much better and the staff were excellent.
Neither of us became sick, but i think that was down to vigilance on our part rather than good hygiene practices - birds often got through the nets and were picking at the cold meats, cheeses and fruit. The staff did their best to keep them away but it proved difficult at times. Swarms of mosquitoes could be seen around food, tables, cutlery etc. Obviously being in a tropical country mosquitoes are to be expected but it did put me off (again matter of opinion).
The Royal Suite pool/beach area is a great idea for those who dont have or are not travelling with children. However, the different colour band thing doesn't always work as people who had orange bands (Royal suites were red) could often be found on the reserved section of the beach or around the pool. In the defense of the staff, they were quick to remove people who shouldn't be there.
Entertainment is generally catered for families - the adult only bar did have some entertainment and karaoke nightly. The staff throughtout the hotel work very hard and would do anything to help.
We did 2 trips that we booked through the reps at the welcome meeting - we were warned of the touts walking up an down the beach and they were referred to as 'pirates' in the small print on the back of the booking form (a little extreme i thought).
Paradise Island was great, a tiny sand island in the middle of the sea. Not a trip for people who suffer from sea sickness as the speedboat ride out to the island is quite rough. Snorkling equipment is provided but if you dont do that the fish can still be seen quite close to the beach.
Freestyle Catamarans - Amazing!!! the crew make the trip so exciting, doing shows, dances and acrobatics from the side of the boat into the sea. We stayed on the boat at the end and enjoyed a few drinks with them - make sure you tip them well they work so hard!!!
Overall a great time was had. It is understandable that there are differences in standards but a holiday is what you make it. To all those going out in the near future - be vigilant with food, take plenty of mossie spray and after-bite and make sure you do a few trips to see more of the island.
I hope this was of some help and if you have any questions - please PM me.
Andrea
