Ferreteria Americana has them, but they are silly expensive.

Amazon has them for 13 bucks:

That one will not work for one that has a neutral in the box.
This is the one you want as your heater probably has a neutral, if there are more than two wires in the box (not including the ground)

Why does one need a neutral in the switch box for a mechanical timer switch?

You don't if the power to the 110 V tank is just two wires. My guess is it is not. Open your switch box with your current manual switch and check to see if you have neutral wires. Our place does and a simple spring wound timer will not work.
Therefore I bought a digital electric timer which is quiet and works quite well

The operation of a mechanical timer is no different than a single pole switch which does not require a neutral. If the heater is 220v volts you can just make and break one of the hot legs, and again no neutral required.

Look, no neutral required.

I’ve never seen one. Is like to suggest that you look into an on-demand hot water heater. They sell both propane and electric. We have 3 propane’s, purchased at Ferriteria Americana. One in each bathroom and one that’s shared between the kitchen sink and the washing machine. They work great.

Ditto. We Went with propane and its fine.
