I"ve always wondered...........
I know it might sound silly but I just don't know how to keep my hair straight in the DR? Are there any special products or process to keep it straight in a hot country. Hot and humid air gets my hair all frizzy :ermm: By the way my hair is curly.
Even in Canada on a rainy day forget it my hair starts to curl up and gets all frizzy yuk lol
I remember my friend brought her straightner to the DR and it didn't last on her hair and she doesn't have curly hair like me.

Is it even possible? any suggestions or am I just out of luck?

I just remembered one of the tv show Friends there was an episode when they went to Hawaii (I think), Monica's hair, that's me! :classic:

It's almost impossible so since you're on holidays, mouse it up , gel it up and go natural you'll have more fun that way. ;)

I like assie products.

I have fine hair that tends to frizz up too, what I do is go to a dominican salon, or dry my hair at home (once you've seen how they do it a few times it's pretty easy to get the hang of it and I'm lucky because my hair is so fine it's dry in 10 minutes!!).

Get them to wash and dry your hair, the day after it still looks pretty good if you don't get it wet. The only problem for me is that I like to wash my hair every day so I usually go frizzy for half the week and sleek for the other half!

The wonderful thing about it is that my hair isn't drying out (yet lol). Having fine hair makes it difficult to blow dry every day because it dries out super quick but thanks to Pantene and their deep conditioners, my hairs just fine. :)

Stay well,
Amy

P.S. I live here so it's not a vacation thing for me .... it's an everyday thing.

amy2761- Do you find specific products help to keep the straight hair straight in the DR? The heat gets to my hair.

Even in Canada one day I came from the Salon and they do a super job at straightening my hair. It was raining and no joke in 15 min my hair was curling and in the next 15 min my hair was frizzy and I did not look like I came from the hair salon lol

I have a ceramic flat iron that works wonderfully. I skip the blowdrying altogether and let my hair dry naturally, I find that using a dryer makes my hair coarse.

As far as a hair product, the best one I have ever encountered is called Being Undressed by Rusk. It's a cross between a wax and a pommade but it's not sticky at all. Just a bit does the trick.

I'm really happy with my flat iron. If you use one, make sure that it is ceramic because any other type will fry your hair.

Oh jeez, girls, we're a little slow today aren't we? ;) I MANUFACTURE body and hair care products LOL. I use whatever conditioner/shampoo/lotion we're currently producing, mix and match all the time, one week one product the next week another.

The only secret I have (besides using our products :bandit: ) is that after the shampoo and conditioner in the shower I use a little bit of whatever bottle of cream I brought home from the factory last, just a tiny bit in the palm of my hand and run that through my damp hair, then let naturally dry or blowdry, makes no difference. The lotion/cream helps prevent flyaways and frizz whether hair is blow-dried or not. Dominican women use a heftier product (some kind of hair oil) because their hair is thicker and can take more product. I find a light body lotion/cream works fine as my hair is finer and tends to look greasy if I put a lot of 'stuff' in it.

Stay well,
Amy

DooBees.......

I gave up on anything but humidity induced curly locks curls in the DR.

However, I did once get a blow out in a salon, for beans, and it was awesome, My favorite part was the Doobee (sp?). After it was all blowed out, to avoid it getting messed up on the motoconcho ride home, they wrapped it around my head - sort of a use your own hair as your turban look -and used bobby pins to keep it in place. I loved going local in that way. It was a trip! And everybody asked me what I had planned for that evening. I had never stepped outdoors in slippers or curlers in my life, and as usual in the DR I tried something new and surprised myself!

Enjoy! Oh, and glycerin works well on my hair to keep a blowout down...

Hmmmm .... I've never tried a moto ride after a visit to the salon!  I think I'll stick to the A/C in the car/jeep, windows up and no smoking. LOL

Stay well,

You can do a number of things if you want it straight. Get it relaxed(permed), or use a ceramic straightening flat iron. But if you are going swimming, the why not just braid it or wear a pony tail.

Make sure you have regular trims. Also, to alleviate the frizzies, I would recommend a layered cut as opposed to all one length.

When you use a flat iron on a layered hairstyle, the humidity will eventually put some curl back into it but it will look really cute with layers. It will almost look as though you've used a curling iron to make the ends "flippy".

You can buy Citra Shine here in either the spray form or the serum form, it's good stuff.

I'm also going to have to check out Amy's stuff!

Thanks everyone :)
I guess my hair will never really stay straight in the DR. I can survive but it was fun and interesting to see what a lot of you do to keep the hair straight.
Curly hair it is for me, I do like it and must admit easy to style :)

Condition, condition, condition.......
and then condition some more!

Make sure you DON'T rinse it ALL out and your hair will be fine.

I have VERY straight hair that is thick and fine and it frizzes with the humidity and the salt down here but a good conditioner keeps it manageable!

where have you girls lived up till now? they make products that STRAIGHTEN hair! its is called a relaxer... if done at a salon can last a very long time...usually new growth is what makes for another trip to the salon..it is the same thing they use to make perment curls in your hair, only they keep combing your hair straight while the relaxer sets in your hair.... it takes about a half hour to do...you can do it at home if you are fast, better to have a helper....and to not let it stay on longer than prescribed..... how do you think so many black women have super straight hair!!!!!!!!!! they relax it... they sell it in various strength depending on how thick and tight the curls are in your hair.....obviously black people have that super tight tiny curl....but comes out straight..

I did it to my gf hair in sept...she was deathly affraid at first then after I did a little sample piece of hair and it dried by air naturally super staright, she demanded that i do the rest right then

but of course the power went off...( its always faster and better to blow dry when done) so off we went to a cabana!!!!! they had their own blow dryer to boot....poor lighting though!......the guy that wanted to get paid kep buzzing me after I started, and was getting ****ed!..it is real funny now days........because her hair was thick it was tough to comb out all the tangles and then this guy kept buzzing me to get paid then I was stupid enough to order food and he kept buzzing me to return the folder the money is paid in.....ahhh what a scene.... and I was losing time because it can only stay on like 10 minutes!!!!!!!!! ha ha ha ha.....ohh the things you will do for the right girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OR maybe you can do a Chinese Perm. That would keep your hair straight!!!
My cousin did it and it did wonders for her hair, but now her hair can't get curly anymore. She has to wait until it grows out. She loves it!!!!
you can go to the beach and it will dry straight.
