The capital should be nice and empty. :) Nevertheless we'll stay at home as much as possible...

Exactly. The best thing about Semana Santa is the lack of traffic in the big cities. I always stay put, let the masses trash the beaches and then I'll probably take off next mid week to a nice quiet beach somewhere.

I never quite understood why members of this site are aroused by people dying during Semana Santa.

I never quite understand why people like walking dead movies and TV shows.

Have fun in whatever way you choose this week.

bars and drinks are to be closed on holy friday: http://www.elcaribe.com.do/2016/03/...ebidas-alcoholicas-deben-cerrar-viernes-santo
there's usually no music on that day either.
booze will be available from stores but no drinking in public places, really.

Guess again. The only thing not allowed is boats & diving. EVERY restaurant, I guarantee, will be open on Pedro Clisante. But then again, most are not Dominican. But Dominicans don't go out. The best cook in the family cooks. Everybody else eats and then they drink. A LOT. Rum bottles in pool. Rooms so filthified you would gag. I ran a hotel in Sosua for 3 years. I basically left bc I did not have a 4th Semana Santa in me. Diapers left by the pool, 10 people in rooms for 5, no respect for music cut-off. Hunny. I love this country. This week I don't love.

Definitely, best time of the year to enjoy "la capital".

Cathedral Concert on Saturday, 26 March

Here are two events in the Colonial City worth participating in (from DR1 Daily News 22 March 2016):

Enjoy the heavenly music of the Santo Domingo Cathedral Choir Concert on Saturday, 26 March 2016 at 8pm. A selection of sacred songs is sung by the refined voices of the choir. Free admission.

On Thursday, 24 March, churches in the Colonial City are open from 8 to midnight for the traditional church-to-church procession by thousands of pilgrims as part of the Easter celebrations.

Check out the four new restaurants in the Colonial City:
Jalao, Buche de Perico, El Conuco and La Casita de Papi.

Shopping is pleasant on Wednesday and Thursday, many stores in malls will be open on Saturday and Sunday.

Enjoy Santo Domingo!

Did you ever venture out of Sosua, or the NorthCoast tourist areas over that period? Obviously not.
It's major close down in genuine Dominican areas compared to the rest of the year. The odd place stays open, but it's shut down town.
Maybe rather than thinking Sosua was the Republic you might have tried to broaden your scope?
