Observation from the Frontier!

Saturday midday ...

The early morning sun has given way to a heavy overcast with the clouds really hanging low. You can smell and almost feel the wood smoke in the air from all the midday fires throughtout Cabral. Almost no breeze at the moment to breakup the smoke although there seems to be a steady build up of some strong gust underway.

Went on a quick trip down the Larimar Coast and there were whitecaps on the Bahia de Neiba already. This is not a normal sight as the Bahia is quite sheltered but it is an indication of the wind shift to the Northeast showing Dean is drawing abreast of Barahona.

Surf in definitely up but not more than it was a few weeks ago when we had a few good tropical rainstorms. The wind direction is definitely different this go around because there were five ( 5 ) boards up off the mouth of the Rio Baoruco with a longer than normal tail off to the South. Seems Pablo pulled in this boat and took to his board. Saw all three ( 3 ) of his boards out there so he got a few friends to lay out also.

Here is Cabral, Papa ( Don Lelo ) popped up to the room about 6am this morning wanting to get a " computer " look at all the action. This was just after Rocky had posted the time sequence of photos so he got an eye full. Must have been impressed because during breakfast I noticed he had a crew up on the old house checking the roof.

Mama ( Mariaita ) is Sindico de Cabral and he must have passed along his thoughts on what he saw to her. On my way into Barahona I noticed she had her Civil Defense folks ( the orange shirt crowd ) all lined up at the city hall. They were handing out new machetes to various work groups from the 11 different barrios to help with expected wind damage cleanup.

12:45 Light rain starting to fall and the whole crowd from the grocery store just showed up here at the house earlier than normal. Looks like siesta is going to start 15 minutes earlier today than normal. We will see how things are at 3pm when the village will wake back up.

For now all is quite along the Frontier but we all know its out there !!!

take care,

kFrancisco de Cabral

There's a lot of water in the tail. Have a quick look at the water vapor (before it changes too much and you can see the band of precipitation that is on the way. The NHC has been cautious saying 1 to 2 inches and up to 5 in higher lying areas. The reports from Puerto Rico so far has been not more than 'tropical storm' conditions. Best I can do Arjan ... you may get wet ;)

Thanks to Dunhill for the JD photos (also on his website).
Nice to have first hand reports of the area you live in/visit by people "on the ground".
Keep posting updates and pic's and thanks to everyone on the thread for their updates!

(it's freezing here in the Great White North - 15C, cloudy, windy and COLD!!)

More on Rain in the Tail

The latest forecast is :
2 to 3 inches over the DR with amounts up to 6 inches possible and more in higher elevations (mudslides and flash floods! don't go visiting waterfalls any time soon!).
Puerto Rico had these amounts and they are expecting another 1 to 2 inches as the storm gets clear of them.

Just had a 'phone call from Matilda in Juan Dolio - power is switched OFF (now there is a strange occurrence in the DR) & won't be back until around 4.00 pm. She will post later when power restored.

In the meantime she reports rain has just started again & wind is beginning to pick up, but nothing at all serious as yet! She has heard of a shift to the north for Dean bringing it much closer to the coast, but as this is the DR & people will wag tongues to seem more knowledgeable about things, this could all be a load of bunkum - I have noticed nothing on the various advisory sites as at 13.30 local time. - Grahame.

Odd you should report that Grahame as I just had an e-mail from our friends in New York and they had heard the same - not sure from what source though.

Thanks Bushbaby and of course Matilda!

Track remains steady West-NorthWest near 17 miles per hour.
Now about 175 miles South of Santo Domingo.
Maximum sustained winds 150 miles per hour.
Minimum central pressure - 930 MB.
Hurricane Force Winds extend outward up to 60 miles
Tropical storm force winds outward up to 205 miles

Nothing has changed, materially, so please reassure Matilda!

If you look at the actual track, you'll see this back and forth - a little south, a little north. I've not even reported on it. If it is consistent, then we will let the alarm go out to the Pedernales Peninsula.

Here is a picture. Look at the actual track and you will see the zig zags ... Stay calm out there! Remember for the US (added - and of course for Jamaica!) this 'northing' is becoming crucial, so they are bound to make a very big deal out of it from now onwards. For us, the fat lady is singing already.

punta cana

Hi ,
had a talk to a Friend of mine 30 minutes ago, working in one of the Riu Hotels, she told me, no Problem. Everything's ok, they had this morning for a few minutes real strong winds but now everything is ok!
So it seems that Punta Cana will get no Problems.

Report from Cabrera

I am vacationing in Cabrera with the family. Came up with family to enjoy Playa Grande and Cabarete before the start of school. We stayed in today, but primarily because we were waiting to fix the internet hook up at the house where we are staying. As you see it was fixed. What we had in this north coast area was just a short strong rain, winds, but nothing impressive. now the telephone repair man told me he had to stop his pick up in front of Playa Grande on his way over because the rains were so strong he had no visibility.

Otherwise, since early this morning one can see some choppy seas out north, but nothing major.

Was told by a friend who went to Cabarete today that there were no windsurfing or kiteboarding outings today. That it was very quiet there.

Interestingly, now at 2:41 it is very quiet here. Hardly a breeze. People here are waiting for the storm. But by now, understand the storm is passing our latitude.

My feeling is that we will be able to continue with our vacation.

As someone who lived through David in a home right across the sea on the western side of the Malecon in Santo Domingo near where the eye of that Category 5 storm entered the DR, I am hurting for Jamaica, and wish preparations are complete.

Again, as I always say, the tourists that are there should consider themselves fortunate to see one of the most impressive spectacles of nature. Of course, one does not pay for this show, but for lovely weather... but if it happens, see the positive side. The locals that have to do the clean up and restoration work are the ones that have the problem. The tourists get a vacation story to tell and tell.

And the winds and rain just hit us a few minutes ago in Sosua.
Nothing serious, of course, but it's the first effects of the storm we are feeling.
