Ultimately, we had to get rid of her -
she had the RD wanderlust and would go killing chickens too often.

Same deal at the next home for her.... dead chix
Finally she wound up in an apartment.... no roaming from there !!

Sorry to take this further off topic of the cane corso...... but we have one rottie who is a hunter. She's killed chickens, pigs, guinea hens, etc., if it moves she wants it. Is there any hope to retrain a dog like that? I'm afraid it's genetic, we have her daughter in NJ and she went after a squirrel and dragged it in the house

Equally important is the ability to call off an attack. The goal is not to foster "blood lust" but to control the application of as much force as is required to take down/incapacitate and then to stop the attack being ready to reengage if the individual won't obey your commands to stay down.

Dogs that are properly trained are like a gun and should only go off when the trigger is pulled and should stop firing when the trigger is released. Most dogs can be trained/conditioned to attack, it's much harder to get them to stop on command. The handler identifies the target not the dog. A dog that chooses its own target or decides to attack on its own is a disaster waiting to happen. A well trained dog will make lots of noise, snarl/growl lunge at an interloper but will not make physical contact until commanded to do so.

If one creates a weapon, one is responsible for it and needs to be in control of it. The "off" switch is all to often overlooked in the rush to toggle the "on" switch.

I'm a Rottie fan. Smart, trainable, wanting to please, naturally protective, usually pretty good with strange children. Some really good dogs available here even if not exactly 100% standard compliant. A little bit of local genes goes a long way to to creating a dog that thrives here.

Well sadly I have no dog experience before the dr......
I dont know where to start training wise......

My first dog, that I still have ( he lived in the house before us:laugh: ) has come a long, long way in obeying commands...... but its still good-dog/ bad-dog type of interaction...... he really is a killer and there is nothing else to do than wait to the victim ( street dog, chicken, robber...) bleeds out and stops breathing:devious:
The only blessing is that out of our grounds he is not overtly agressive.

The 2 year old rottie is just GREAT and seems to read my mind. But he doesnt growl/snarl/bark if someone unknown is prowling aroumd....... he leaves that to the small yappy one. The rottie hides under a bush or tree, all tensed up, hoping the guy will jump the wall or fence.....lol.

Please note, my dogs have free roam of the grounds and conuco, but I do not let them out and about.
I have even stopped walking them all together as I heard ( through zigzaggy means ) that people are scared when I am out with them, even though i have them on leashes.....

Some just do it.... hard to break them of it.

I don't mind until the neighbors come after me.

Like malko, we keep them in the property as much as possible... fenced, manned - we try and for the most part they aren't loose.

Like malko - thats the reason for odd 'road trip' into town..
they all know I've got them, they all stand back from the open car

The dogs lock in on them but sit in the car.
Sometimes I need to pump my own gas !!

My cats only feather strip a bird in the house - never outside.... snakes too...
I thought they'd found a ball to play with.... nope , snake

Also, I feed them raw chicken frequently - reminds them they're dogs -- bone crunching, a great tip from a breeder.
Never cooked bones... raw

They wake from a dead sleep when I chop a chicken.

We keep our dogs inside the fences all the time too, the only time they're in the car is if they're going to the vet. Mr. AE does walk them [one at a time] down to the beach for a swim, he gets a wide berth

The things she kills come on to our property - chickens/roosters fly over the wall. Little piglet squeezed under the fence. A flock of 6 guinea hens appeared in the front yard, only 5 left. Cat climbed over the wall.

She proudly brought the guinea hen to Mr. AE, it was still alive but dying. He cleaned it and gave it to the maid to cook. The pig she killed and then laid down in front of it, protecting her treasure and daring anyone to come near. We finally got her away from it, caretaker cut it up and fed it to the 3 dogs raw.

Tyson just watches her, never participates. We did have to get rid of the 3rd dog, a viralata bitch, because she and the rottie hated each other and often got into fights. Sometimes Tyson would stand back, but a few times he attacked the rottie to protect his little sankette. Their fights were scary and it was very hard to separate them. The last one took three men, that's when we knew we had to do something before we left for NJ - if it ever happened when they were alone they'd kill each other.

We found a home for her in the next town [I was afraid she'd somehow find her way back, but so far so good].

problem is , any rescue comes 'pre-wired' .... fully loaded circuit board... fact

and if it's Dominican pre-wired... its worse than normal
they can have issues , rescues....

Where did you get your food from WW? My chihuahuas and cats from Canada have the better food from the arc or whatever it is called at Bravo in Santiago. I am poor compared to you we all can't feed my huge rescues your stuff. I get the price smart stuff. That Camdum stuff or whatever they don't like, not really sure which is better PS or cambium.

I guess I could stop eating out every day and feed them better, the wife does want to feed them a raw food diet. I am pretty selfish though hence no kids...

My dogs love Campeon my pure bred American Bulldog pup loves it and never had any issues but I also add meat and left overs as well but some days they get just dry food. On another tip one of my dogs had really bad mange and I spent money on vets and everything else and nothing worked. One day my wife got tired and used the Domincan method tied the dog up used a paint brush and painted the dog with old black motor oil and left her like that guess what dog has not had mange since and that was 4 years ago and we did it do another did that started to get mange all my dogs are healthy and fit !

I'm mean - if our dogs dumped their food over they wouldn't get anything else. When they get hungry enough they'll eat it. Tough love. I'm also the only one that all the dogs listen to, I've got that stern mother's voice going for me. Mr. AE is too nice.

Mange is when the dogs lose their fur and skin gets all dry and bleeds sometimes but Im telling you the old motor oil fixes that it is crazy but it was the only thing that worked for my dog .

Neither of my dogs will eat Champion. I am still working my way through a bag a handful at a time mixed with other acceptable kibble and sardines.

I too thought that the dogs will eat when they get hungry enough but after a couple of days I broke down went back to something the like.

Sardines are great.... I saw you buy them... we do it too.

Some wet food as a treat ..... like the sardines... once / twice a week.

Water the food.... broth maybe, no salt......

Buy the 'soup chicken ' parts.... and throw it in, raw or boiled.... feet, necks, all the stuff that makes soup/broth

Don't add it up... ain't cheap
