Jane - sounds really interesting. I'll pick it up this weekend and let you know what I think.

I've heard Amor en Los Tiempos de Colera is another great book. Haven't heard of the other titles though.

Thanks for all the suggestions, those should keep me busy for the next couple of weeks.

FYI fiesta del Chivo

This is a FICTIONALIZED version of the assassination of Trujillo. Not to be confused with total facts. It is my understanding that Llosa may be sued for plagiarism by an author who wrote a nonfiction account. Can't remember his name right now. I have read the nonfiction and will try to find the title and author when I get home tonight.

Gee, it seems like we have hijacked this thread and turned it into a literary corner. Allow me to spit out my opinion before we are steered back to the OP.

Magical Realism (I don't know if this is the correct translation for the "Realismo M?gico" movement) had its greatest representative in Garc?a M?rquez. 100 A?os de Soledad is his indisputable best book, he went downwards after that. I find his books entertaining at best. Isabel Allende is just another child of the movement, but her books are nowhere near the quality of 100 A?os de Soledad, not even near the quality of Garc?a M?rquez's "lesser" books. Her books are so feminine and sugary that I am sure she can cause cavities. Of course, if I don't have a new book in my bathroom for my "literary" moments while sitting in the throne, Allende's books are more than adequate.

La Fiesta del Chivo is only a good book insofar as it satisfy our morbid curiosity for the darkest sides of Trujillo. What we don't know it's filled by the fertile imagination of the author. IMHO Vargas Llosa is at his best in El Elogio de la Madrastra. It is a book I enjoyed tremendously. Many people will disagree, I am sure. But I am sick, what can I say. :D

Ok, now we may go back to the OP

Books, books, books.

I just got a fresh delivery from Amazon:
"Feast of the Goat" and "Quisqueya la Bella", both in English (and I have the feeling Quisqueya La Bella is where tiger gets all his stuff from) I'll find out very soon.
On its way also, "Why Cocks Fight": Dominicans and Hatians struggle for the island. This one by Michele Wucker promises to be good.
We could start a book report thread later on.

Oooh, a DR1 book club! What a great idea...

Has anyone read The Farming of Bones by Edwidge Danticat? It's set in the times of Trujillo, but from a Haitian's perspective. I noticed that Danticat's most recent book is Oprah's selection of the month...

Slight Hijack....Book Club

Thanks to all who posted recommendations. Added them all to my list.

Techie: 100 years is my first spanish book in 20 years. (This is very embarrassing but I really neglected my Spanish) So I would not be a good source for recommendations.

So who is going to head-up the book club?
Jane J?
PIB?

By the way PIB, girls don't take reading materials into the bathroom, that's a guy thing.
